Book Description :

In 2001, the late Murray Kleiner and an array of experts contributed to the Handbook of Polygraph Testing, published by Elsevier, which examined the fundamental principles behind polygraph tests and reviewed the key tests and methods used at that time. In the intervening thirteen years, the field has moved beyond traditional polygraph testing to include a host of biometrics and behavioral observations. The new title reflects the breadth of methods now used. Credibility Assessment builds on the content provided in the Kleiner volume, with revised polygraph testing chapters and chapters on newer methodologies, such as CNS, Ocular-motor, and behavioral measures. Deception detection is a major field of interest in criminal investigation and prosecution, national security screening, and screening at ports of entry. Many of these methods have a long history, e.g., polygraph examinations, and some rely on relatively new technologies, e.g., fMRI and Ocular-motor measurements. Others rely on behavioral observations of persons in less restricted settings, e.g., airport screening. The authors, all of whom are internationally-recognized experts associated with major universities in the United States, United Kingdom, and Europe, review and analyze various methods for the detection of deception, their current applications, and major issues and controversies surrounding their uses. This volume will be of great interest among forensic psychologists, psychophysiologists, polygraph examiners, law enforcement, courts, attorneys, and government agencies. Provides a comprehensive review of all aspects of methods for deception detection Includes methods being used in credibility, such as autonomic, CNS, fMRI, and Ocular-motor measures and behavioral and facial observation Edited by leaders in the field with over 25+ years of experience Discusses theory and application

Book Description :

Credibility assessment refers to any attempt to ascertain truthfulness. Other terms which have been used to refer to the assessment of credibility include the detection of deception and lie detection. The term lie detection has become virtually synonymous with the use of the polygraph and can no longer be used to refer to the range of procedures currently employed to assess credibility. Also, both lie detection and the detection of deception have a negative cast which does not fully capture the orientation of current approaches to credibility. Consequently, the term credibility assessment has emerged recently as the preferred label. The goal of credibility assessment is typically the determination of the truth of a statement or be found in set of statements. The need or desire to make such an assessment can every human context from marital relations through clinical examinations to police and court interrogations. Examples of the kinds of statements which require credibility assessment are: 1) A child's assertion that she or he has been sexually abused. 2) The claim by a previously suicidal person that he or she has recovered and will not attempt suicide again. 3) The denial of guilt by a suspect in a criminal investigation. 4 ) The confident statement of a witness that he or she is sure in his or her identification of a thief. 5) The vow of loyalty by a potential employee for a security job. It is necessary to assess the credibility of these and similar statements.

Book Description :

This thesis inquires in the assessment of credibility in refugee status determination procedures (RSD procedures). It seeks to understand how theory and practice attempt to limit the inherent subjectivity of such assessment. For this purpose, this thesis maps out a framework of standards and principles applicable to credibility assessment. In a second step, at the example of the Swiss Asylum System, it investigates how these standards and principles are realized in legal practice. On the basis of the observations drawn from this inquiry, certain shortcomings in the national practical conduct of credibility assessment are identified, particularly the limitations on scrutiny of negative credibility findings. Then, on a more abstract basis, two main areas of concern are identified with regard to credibility assessment, namely, the overall complexity of the guidance framework and the increasing pressure on RSD procedures due to ongoing efforts to increase efficiency. Lastly, different measures at national and international level are proposed in order to cope with issues arising from both of these areas. To that extent, it is concluded that with a clear national legal basis, the overall complexity of the framework guiding RSD could be reduced. Also, targeted training measures could promote quality development and adherence to the standards and principles governing credibility assessment. Finally, taking account of the psychological and sociological denominators of RSD, a proposal for an institutionalized conversation at international level is introduced. The aim behind this proposal is to enable an inter-disciplinary knowledge transfer in order to develop a less fragmented and more comprehensive framework for credibility assessment.

Book Description :

This is the first study to contrast how adults make credibility assessments about children who experienced a suggestive interview, children who had been coached to lie, and children who were telling the truth. Nine preschool children were interviewed about an event involving a minor infraction. Three of the children reported the truth, four were coached to lie, and two children reported misinformation as the result of a suggestive interview. Eighty-seven college students watched videotaped interviews of these nine children and assessed their credibility. Children who had experienced a suggestive interview were rated as credible as those who were telling the truth. Children who had been coached to lie were rated as less credible than the two groups of children. The results suggest that misleading information gets incorporated into children's memory, thus arguing for a cognitive rather than social explanation of suggestibility. The implication for children's court testimony and jury decisions are discussed. (Abstract).

Book Description :

Contingent on funding being available, a Festschrift will be held in honor of Dr. John Yuille’s career as a Forensic Psychologist. He has become one of the most visible and respected Canadian psychologists worldwide. In light of his upcoming retirement in December 2006, the Festschrift will recognize Dr. Yuille’s achievements in the areas of eyewitness memory research (i.e., pioneering a new research paradigm that grants better validity), investigative interviewing (i.e., the development and use of the Step Wise Interview Protocol), and credibility assessment (i.e., introducing Statement Validity Analysis to North America). New directions for future work will be explored at the workshop. The focus of this Festschrift will be three-fold: 1. International. Dr. Yuille’s work has influenced law enforcement practices and stimulated research in and outside of Canada. The international and multicultural aspects of the work that Dr. Yuille has inspired will be reflected and promoted by this workshop. 2. Interdisciplinary. Dr. Yuille is internationally known as an expert, consultant and trainer to law enforcement. As such, Dr. Yuille’s work has also influenced other disciplines, e.g., the law, social work, oral history. The participants of this Festschrift will gain insight into other professionals’ perspectives and foster potential collaborations on future projects. 3. Emphasis on applied research. A hallmark of Dr. Yuille’s research has been the application of field and archival methods, which made his work directly applicable to forensically relevant contexts. The potential future directions of applied forensic research will be discussed at this Festschrift. The importance of the subject at this time: - A lack of integrative models in the literatures of eyewitness memory and the assessment of truthfulness and deception. Presenters of the Festschrift have recently developed such models and will discuss them at the Festschrift. Publishing these models and their discussions will spark further research to validate or modify them. - New, pioneering field research based on such integrative models has recently been conducted. This book would be one of the first publications of the results.

Book Description :

We examined the possibility of detecting deception with a statement analysis technique that we called-Credibility Analysis of Verbatim Statements (CAVS). Twenty-six subjects were interviewed about their work history by an experienced interviewer. Subject were previously instructed to tell one true story about a job that they had held and to tell one false story about a fictitious job. Subject were motivated to tell convincing lies by the offer of a monetary reward if they fooled the interviewer with their false statement. The interviewer was no better than chance at discriminating the true and false statements and was correct with only 13 of the 26 subjects. The subject's interviews were videotaped and were then transcribed. Fifteen Content and eleven Structural criteria were then scored in the statements by trained evaluators who had reference only to the transcripts. The data were analyzed with discriminant analysis and logistic regression. Logistic regression proved to be the more powerful approach. The results of this study suggest that CAVS can be a very powerful tool for assessing the credibility of statements made by adults. The within-subjects discriminations were particularly powerful. Given the need for flexible and effective credibility assessment in the national security system, we believe that CAVS is a good candidate for application and deserving of additional research and development.

Book Description :

Although citizens encounter science claims in written popular media, the process by which they make judgments about the credibility of science claims is often complicated. Most of them must figure out what and whom to believe even though they know little of relevant science. Prior research has demonstrated that people often use social and institutional cues to make sophisticated judgments about the credibility of science claims. To explore the strategies readers use to assess credibility, this dissertation used think-aloud methods with 5 groups: one group of scientific insiders (3 climate scientists) and four groups of scientific outsiders (5 non-climate scientists, 5 science writers, 5 science teachers, and 5 non-science teachers). They were asked to think aloud under two different situations. First, while reading a short news article that contained conflicting opinions about the Arctic methane and its impact on climate change; second, when using the Internet to search for additional information to decide what to believe about the article. Results indicate that both insiders and a subset of outsiders placed considerable importance on determining the credibility of the article's author, spent a correspondingly large amount of time energy checking for clues that the article might not be credible, and relied on reputational networks in their own professional communities. Notably, the science teachers showed a shared inclination to explore the primary research literature when asked to assess credibility raising questions about the sorts of knowledge and resources that might be useful for outsiders when assessing credibility. These findings provide further empirical support to the long-standing criticism of science education that prioritizes systematic evaluation of scientific evidence and argument over judgments that rely on the use of social and institutional cues of credibility.
