The COVID-19 virus outbreak has rocked the world and it is widely accepted that there can be no return to the pre-pandemic society of 2019. However, many suggestions for the future of society and the planet are aimed at national governments, international bodies and society in general. Drawing on a decade of research by an internationally renowned expert, this book focuses on how cities and communities can lead the way in developing recovery strategies that promote social, economic and environmental justice. It offers new thinking tools for civic leaders and activists as well as practical suggestions on how we can co-create a more inclusive post COVID-19 future for us all.

What might the world look like in the aftermath of COVID-19? Almost every aspect of society will change after the pandemic, but if we learn lessons then life can be better. Featuring expert authors from across academia and civil society, this book offers ideas that might put us on alternative paths for positive social change. A rapid intervention into current commentary and debate, Life After COVID-19 looks at a wide range of topical issues including the state, co-operation, work, money, travel and care. It invites us to see the pandemic as a dress rehearsal for the larger problem of climate change, and it provides an opportunity to think about what we can improve and how rapidly we can make changes.

Book Description :

COVID-19 antibody tests have imperfect accuracy. There has been lack of clarity on the meaning of reported rates of false positives and false negatives. For risk assessment and clinical decision making, the rates of interest are the positive and negative predictive values of a test. Positive predictive value (PPV) is the chance that a person who tests positive has been infected. Negative predictive value (NPV) is the chance that someone who tests negative has not been infected. The medical literature regularly reports different statistics, sensitivity and specificity. Sensitivity is the chance that an infected person receives a positive test result. Specificity is the chance that a non-infected person receives a negative result. Knowledge of sensitivity and specificity permits one to predict the test result given a person's true infection status. These predictions are not directly relevant to risk assessment or clinical decisions, where one knows a test result and wants to predict whether a person has been infected. Given estimates of sensitivity and specificity, PPV and NPV can be derived if one knows the prevalence of the disease, the rate of illness in the population. There is considerable uncertainty about the prevalence of COVID-19. This paper addresses the problem of inference on the PPV and NPV of COVID-19 antibody tests given estimates of sensitivity and specificity and credible bounds on prevalence. I explain the methodological problem, show how to estimate bounds on PPV and NPV, and apply the findings to some tests authorized by the FDA.

Book Description :

To cure a case of COVID-19, we need a comprehensive definition of the COVID-19, and a complementary definition of cure covering all aspects and all cases. Neither exists today. COVID-19 is incurable. COVID-19 Defining Cured defines cure, cures, curing and cured as related to COVID-19, from the simplest asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection, to multiple stages of disease leading to disabilities and additional disease that might be caused by COVID-19. Today, cured is not defined for COVID-19. Statistics for COVID-19 include counts of Cases, Recovered, and Deaths. There are no counts for cured. Because cured is not defined for COVID-19, it is not possible to count COVID-19 cures. It is also not possible to test or validate any COVID-19 cures. This is hardly a surprise. Cured is not defined scientifically nor medically for most diseases. Cured is defined in a testable fashion for an infectious disease that is cured by a medicine. No other type of disease has a definition of cured. Cured is not defined for any disease cured by natural healthiness, therefore "there is no cure for the common cold". Cured is not defined for any mental disorder. Cured cannot be defined for a mental disorder - due to an obscured technical issue. Cured is not defined for any chronic disease - and as a result all chronic diseases are considered incurable. Finally, cured is not defined for any non-infectious disease. Healthicine, the arts and sciences of health and healthiness, contains a theory of cure and provides a clear definition of cured for any (curable) element of illness as published in A Theory of Cure and The Elements of Cure. A severe case of COVID-19 consists of many elements of illness. As a result, a severe case of COVID-19 requires several cures, only one of which can be medically recognized. This book presents an analysis of the theory of cure, as it applies to the disease COVID-19. This is not about about curing COVID-19, it is about understanding cures, and COVID-19, to the point where we understand when a COVID-19 cure is present, or not.

Book Description :

The COVID-19 crisis comes at a complex moment for European climate policy as it pivots from a 40% 2030 emissions reduction target to a European Green Deal that is in better alignment with long-term Paris Agreement goals. Here, the implications of the dramatic fall in economic output associated with the crisis are examined using a representative range of growth scenarios. With lower economic activity resulting from the COVID-19 crisis, existing policy measures could achieve the 40% target sooner than 2030. However, we find that even in the most severe economic scenario examined, this falls well short of the 50-55% emissions reduction target under the Green Deal. Maintaining the existing 40% target in 2030 with reduced policy measures on the other hand would move European climate policy away from the required path. This analysis indicates the feasibility of increased climate ambition in the wake of the pandemic and supports the Green Deal 50-55% targets in 2030.

Book Description :

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a potentially powerful tool in the fight against the COVID- 19 pandemic. Since the outbreak of the pandemic, there has been a scramble to use AI. This article provides an early, and necessarily selective review, discussing the contribution of AI to the fight against COVID-19, as well as the current constraints on these contributions. Six areas where AI can contribute to the fight against COVID-19 are discussed, namely i) early warnings and alerts, ii) tracking and prediction, iii) data dashboards, iv) diagnosis and prognosis, v) treatments and cures, and vi) social control. It is concluded that AI has not yet been impactful against COVID-19. Its use is hampered by a lack of data, and by too much data. Overcoming these constraints will require a careful balance between data privacy and public health, and rigorous human-AI interaction. It is unlikely that these will be addressed in time to be of much help during the present pandemic. In the meantime, extensive gathering of diagnostic data on who is infectious will be essential to save lives, train AI, and limit economic damages.

Book Description :

The global COVID-19 pandemic is plunging the world into a socio-economic and financial crisis of an unprecedented scale, in addition to the acute health crisis. Many of the gains achieved under the banner of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are under threat. The crisis has exposed and exacerbated vulnerabilities and inequalities in both developing and developed countries, deepening poverty and exclusion and pushing the most vulnerable even further behind. This is a watershed moment. A sustainable, equitable and peaceful future hinges on the right national and international policy decisions. This policy note assembles analysis by members of the United Nations Committee for Development Policy (CDP) and co-authors on different angles of the COVID-19 crisis and the challenges and opportunities it presents for development policy and multilateralism.

Book Description :

Food production and distribution is essential for human well-being, but the food sector has experienced a number of difficulties maintaining worker health and productivity during the COVID-19 pandemic. We examine employment status changes of persons recently employed in the U.S. food sector with a focus on food manufacturing and grocery stores. We find that the pandemic significantly reduced the probability of continued active employment for previous workers in both food manufacturing and grocery stores. Individual-level analysis confirms that the COVID-19 infection rate in an individual's local labor market is a strong and significant factor. The employment changes are not just due to unemployment during facility closures. Previous workers increasingly exit the labor force as the severity of the COVID-19 infection rate in their local area worsens. The considerable risk of infection drives many previous food sector workers to stop working altogether. Maintaining worker health and safety is essential for a stable food supply.

Book Description :

From Mumbai to Delhi and Kolkata to Bangalore, the Indian economy has been on an explosive upward trajectory in recent decades. While the economy is widely diversified, the country is perhaps best known for its world-famous ICT sector, while sectors like the behemoth pharmaceuticals industry and ever-growing manufacturing landscape also enjoy strong success. Yet much potential exists elsewhere, none more so than tourism—the country attracts only around 10 million arrivals a year, far short of tourism giants like France, which enjoys nine times that number. And with the strength and variety of destinations evident, it seems only a matter of time until India begins to receive the numbers of visitors it deserves. COVID-19, however, has put the breaks on Indian growth, having brought the economy to an uncomfortable halt in March, with the impacts continuing to be felt despite the partial lifting of lockdown measures over summer, with welfare initiatives failing to benefit the majority of now out-of-work Indians due to the sheer scale of the informal economy. This 22-page special report seeks to delve into the response of the federal government, contrast the impact of COVID-19 in India with other major economies, and cast a gaze beyond, with a deep dive into key sectors from pharma and ICT to tourism and more. What could India have done differently? Which main economic hubs should we look to for recovery? And which sectors are the COVID-19 winners and losers? We seek to answer these questions over the following pages.

Book Description :

These days, we are panicking at the raging of corona virus. At first glance, China's health authorities underestimated their danger. And so far, its destructive power is the most terrible among the diseases that humans have experienced in the last 100 years. At the place where I work, people are rushing to buy medical masks. And business people take advantage of this to increase the price of masks and handwash to 10-12 times normal. As a doctor, I understand why this situation occurs. This is because most people do not yet know the corona virus and how it is transmitted. So, I took the time to write a file about corona virus (Everything about coronavirus and how to protect yourself), and a guide on how to choose and use medical masks properly (Everything about face masks and Coronavirus). And now, I feel I need to continue to teach people how to wash their hands properly. Because of this, along with wearing a mask, are the two most important things to help prevent the spread of corona virus in the community. In this booklet, I will share the following 3 main content: 1. Why should I wash my hands during the coronavirus outbreak? The benefits that handwashing brings to each of us help prevent disease spread. 2. How to wash your hands properly according to the instructions of reputable health organizations. 3. Finally, I will share the type of hand sanitizer recommended by health professionals. I hope that my knowledge and colleagues from health organizations around the globe will help people take the initiative in preventing the spread of corona virus disease. And we will repel it soon. Sincerely thank you! Dr. Timothy Zahar [email protected]
