Book Description :

Coronary Artery disease is one of the leading causes of death in industrialized countries and is responsible for one out of every six deaths in the United States. Remarkably, coronary artery disease is also largely preventable. The biggest challenge in the next years is to reduce the incidence of coronary artery disease worldwide. A complete knowledge of the mechanisms responsible for the development of ischaemic heart disease is an essential prerequisite to a better management of this pathology improving prevention and therapy. This book has been written with the intention of providing new concepts about coronary artery disease pathogenesis that may link various aspects of the disease, going beyond the traditional risk factors.

Book Description :

Coronary Heart Disease: Clinical, Pathological, Imaging, and Molecular Profiles presents a comprehensive picture of ischemic heart disease for practitioners, students, and investigators dealing with the varied facets of this complex subject. Individual chapters introduce the anatomy of the coronary blood vessels and cardiac development, while others consider current imaging modalities utilized for ischemic heart disease, including stress echo, nuclear diagnostic tests, non-invasive coronary artery imaging, and coronary angiography. Imaging chapters provide key clinical information on techniques and indications, and include examples of both normal and abnormal patterns. The principle thrust of the book concerns coronary atherosclerosis, the pathology of which is presented in conjunction with the results of anatomic, non-invasive imaging and angiographic studies. Related chapters cover atherogenesis, presenting new insights into the pathophysiology of the vulnerable plaque, the role of progenitor cells in vascular injury, inflammation and atherogenesis, and the genomics of vascular remodeling. Additional topics covered include angina pectoris, acute coronary syndromes, healed myocardial infarction and congestive heart failure, catheter-based and surgical revascularization, and surgical treatment of myocardial infarction and its sequelae. With contributions from a diverse group of internationally-known physicians with broad experience in the diagnosis and treatment of coronary heart disease, this book will be a valuable resource for practitioners in clinical cardiology, thoracic surgery, pathology, and cardiovascular molecular research, as well as for students in training.

Book Description :

Three coauthors from two of the most highly regarded U.S. schools for coronary artery disease (CAD) programs take a fresh approach to prevention and rehabilitation in Coronary Artery Disease: Essentials of Prevention and Rehabilitation Programs. Peter Brubaker, Leonard Kaminsky, and Mitchell Whaley combine real-world examples with the fundamental principles of CAD management, laying the foundation for a new way of thinking about prevention and secondary rehabilitation programs. Supplemented by case studies, the text allows readers to follow the process of how CAD is evaluated and what interventions are used to manage this disease. Particularly, attention is given to lifestyle modifications, especially exercise programming. Tables, figures, and photographs illustrate the three-part text, which features the essentials of CAD management, related concepts, exercise testing and programming, and administrative concerns. Part I, "Introduction to CAD Prevention and Rehabilitation," provides a comprehensive review of cardiovascular physiology and pathophysiology, along with coronary artery disease assessment, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment. Part II, "Practical Applications to CAD Prevention and Rehabilitation," explains the fundamentals of electrocardiography administration and interpretation as well as the essentials of physical fitness assessment (highlighting exercise testing), exercise prescription, and adaptations to chronic exercise training. Part III, "Organization and Administration of CAD Prevention and Rehabilitation," provides information on CAD programming based on the policies and procedures at Ball State and Wake Forest Universities. The text offers guidelines for developing CAD programs and issues for students and professors to consider. The foundational nature of Coronary Artery Disease: Essentials of Prevention and Rehabilitation Programsmakes it an essential text for undergraduate and graduate students of exercise science. The text's comprehensive approach to CAD also makes it an excellent reference tool for health professionals in the prevention and rehabilitation field.

Book Description :

Despite considerable effort in primary prevention, coronary heart disease continues to be the leading cause of death in the industrialized nations. The patient who survives his first myocardial infarction carries approximately a tenfold risk of recurrence and sudden death when compared to the normal population. The concept of secondary prevention, therefore, has emerged as an active strategy aimed at the reduction of fatal and non-fatal recurrences of myocardial infarction. Apart from risk factors of relevance in primary prevention, secondary prevention is dependent on the extent of the disease itself; in other words the number of vessels involved, the extent of myocar dial damage and the degree of electrical instability. Nonmedical aspects such as the level of education, the degree of social support and the attitude towards stress also appear to influence the prognosis. The aim of this volume is to bring together all those factors relevant to achieving the maximal life span in patients afflicted with a disease that by its very nature is a lifelong process. However, as the late Paul Dudley White stated appropriately more than 40 years ago, it is not sufficient merely to add years to a life, one should also add life to the years. This concept truly is the nucleus of secondary prevention, sine only a life worth living generates the motivitation needed to take all the steps necessary in secondary pre vention. Book Description :

Coronary artery disease is a cardiovascular disease and includes stable angina, myocardial infarction, unstable angina and cardiac death. A common symptom of coronary artery disease is pain in the chest that extends to the arm, back, shoulder or jaw. Shortness of breath, and a feeling of heartburn may also occur. The diagnosis of coronary artery disease is aided by electrocardiogram, coronary computed tomographic angiography, cardiac stress testing and coronary angiogram. Medications such as antiplatelets, nitroglycerin or beta blockers are recommended, while procedures such as coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) may be performed on a critical patient. In case of acute coronary syndrome, revascularization may be done. This book is a compilation of chapters that discuss the most vital concepts and emerging trends related to coronary artery disease. The various advancements in the diagnosis and surgical management of coronary artery disease are glanced at and their implications and ramifications are looked at in detail. It includes contributions of experts and scientists, which will provide innovative insights into this domain of medical science.
