An efficient field model based on CFD techniques is being developed to predict the smoke spread and fire growth. In this paper, as a test case, the field model has been used to investigate the effects of a f re located at the centre and corner of the standard ISO 9705 room size. The computational fluid dynamics techniques adopted as the methodology incorporated various models to consider the effects of the turbulent flow, radiation and combustion in the enclosure to predict various output quantities From the investigations, different flow and temperature structures were obtained for the two cases which were affected by the location of the f re and the entrainment of the air to the f re. It was found that the corner room fire displayed a more stable phenomenon in comparison to the centre room fire. The computed results suggested that the field model approach can reliably predict the complexities associated with fire and smoke spread of which zone models may not due to their simplicity and restrictive assumptions.
