Miniaturizing circuit is necessary because of its vast improved performance in the operation. Tremendous achievement in metal oxide semiconductor fabrication techniques makes reduced transistor size achievable. Recently a great emphasis has been given on developing a wrist watch size bio-chip analyzer system at Microelectronics and BioMEMS laboratory at the University of Cincinnati. The focus of this thesis is to design an ASIC for measurement, calibration and display of the bio-chip sensor signals. In this design the importance is given to build an accurate, low power consuming circuit on a minimum chip area with a minimum number of transistors. More emphasis is given to signal processing in the analog domain and to minimize the component requirements, hence making the system faster. The circuit design starts at the system level design. Commercially available components were used to build the entire system on a breadboard. As a prototype, the entire electronic system was assembled on a printed circuit board using the Express PCB layout design tool. Later a hand held system was developed by converting the prototype in to a Surface Mountable Technology based system using Orcad Schematic Capture tool. Once the design principle was tested, the entire system was converted into ASIC using CMOS design techniques. ASIC layout design was accomplished using Magic 6.3. ASIC design simulation was accomplished using Tanner EDA Tools TSpice, S-Edit and W-Edit. Hierarchical reductions in the size of the boards were achieved in each generation with 1st generation PCB of size 13.9 X 6.9 inch and 2nd generation PCB of size 6 X 4 inch and the 3rd generation SMT of size 3.5 X 3.5 inch and the final expected size of the bio-chip analyzer in ASIC form is less than 2 X 2 inch.
