The concern about the fire resistance of hydraulic fluids by the Air Force and the rest of the Department of Defense (DoD) dates back to the introduction of the mineral oil based hydraulic fluid, MIL-H-5606 [1], into aircraft hydraulic systems. This concern has led to the development of two fire resistant hydraulic fluids that can be directly substituted into aircraft hydraulic systems that were designed to use MIL-H-5606, i.e., MIL-H-83282 [2] and MIL-H-87257 [3], and a nonflammable hydraulic fluid, MTL-H-53119 [4], that can be used only in hydraulic systems that were designed for that fluid or in subsystems originally designed for MIL-H-5606, MIL-H-83282 or MIL-H-87257, for which re-design of the components and retrofit of the system with compatible seals, if required, would be cost effective. Another fire resistant hydraulic fluid was developed for use in commercial aircraft hydraulic systems, a phosphate ester based hydraulic fluid described by Society of Automotive Engineers document AS1241, Fire Resistant Phosphate Ester Hydraulic Fluid for Aircraft The fire resistant properties of these fire resistant and nonflammable hydraulic fluids are discussed and the flammability test methods are presented.

Hydraulic systems for ships and their filters have often been based on aircraft equipment and design practices. This paper compares the criteria for design and selection of filters for aircraft and ships. By considering important parameters, the designer can make a more intelligent choice in selecting filters for a particular application. Parameters discussed include filter location, essentiality and duration of operation, logistic support requirements, and maintenance philosophy, including costs. While most of the parameters for filter selection are similar for aircraft and ships there are important differences which must be considered. Dirt capacity requirements for military aircraft filters are generally inadequate for ship hydraulic systems as well as commercial aircraft. By considering the various design and maintenance requirements, improved filtration can be provided for ship hydraulic systems at lower life cycle costs than at present although initial costs may be slightly higher.

This project aims to study the feasibility of a program capable of modelling and obtaining the total weight of the fuel system of commercial aircrafts. Once this program has been created, focus can be turned to the hydraulic system, with the aim of achieving the same. In order to achieve this, all the components of both systems are explained, and how these components work side by side to perform the necessary functions. A study of the current solutions used has been carried out in order to estimate the mass of the systems studied (statistical based formulas). The methodology followed within the project is then explained in order to obtain the code: the common characteristics, patterns, calculations of the necessary elements and explanation of the hypotheses and simplifications considered. Next, how the program works is explained in detail, carried out in Python language, the outputs that are obtained with its execution, and the limitations of the code. It is clear to see there is not enough information, or it is confidential, to make a program for the hydraulic system. After testing the code for the fuel system, analysing the results obtained by the program and comparing them with the values of the current statistical formulas, the study concludes that although the approach of a parametric program is interesting from the point of view of flexibility, we must continue working on and improving the project, as well as collecting real data, to obtain results that point to the real value of the aircraft. It is hoped that this project will also serve the reader as a guide to understand how both systems work and their basic functionalities.
