Combined cooling, heating and power (CCHP) systems are power generation stations designed for maximum waste heat recovery and energy sustainability. In a conventional CCHP system, a gas turbine provides the electrical generation and the waste heat is recovered for cooling and heating. Traditionally, utility-scale CCHP plants of 100 MW or more were commissioned to support large industrial processing plants. Light industry, commercial, and institutional applications have adopted smaller CCHP systems to realize economic savings and environmental benefits. Besides facing operating constraints such as smaller foot-print, shorter reaction time and shorter control tolerances, these plants also encounter low energy demands because of diurnal or seasonal variations, forcing them to operate at part-load. Coupled with relatively high capital and O & M costs, compact CCHP stations then become uneconomical for end-users. From flexibilities in operation, however, there are ample opportunities for favorable economic dispatch by operating the plant under demand response programs and ancillary services. The small-scaled CCHP systems fall under the distributed generation (DG) category of many regulatory policies and electricity rate tariffs of utilities. Several typical rate structures applicable to CCHP systems were evaluated, including standby and non-standby time-of-use (TOU), and critical peak pricing (CPP). The economic analysis produced insights on novel and preferred chiller dispatch strategies for energy and demand charge reduction. The increased variability and uncertainty of renewable generation add to the balancing duties of grid regulators whom previously had to deal with such behaviors in system load. The situation is becoming direr for California, as the state mandates 33% renewable resource generation by 2020 along with a plethora of stringent environmental legislation that would displace 18,000 MW of traditional base-load plants by 2020. Therefore, ancillary services will become more valuable as grid balancing authorities such as CAISO seek to address the uncertainty and variability in renewable generation. A gas turbine-driven CCHP system is one example of an ancillary service provider capable of complementing the increased renewable penetration. This dissertation seeks to elucidate the feasibility of implementing CCHP technology to light industrial and commercial applications for favorable economic dispatch to complement demand response services and renewable integration.

Abstract: In this paper, a combined cooling heating and power micro-grid system framework which considers lots of device types and possible connections is presented. Based on this framework, a mathematical model considering constraints of load demand and operation is built; its optimal objective is to minimize the cost and carbon emission. The Multi-objective Particle Swarm Optimization (MPSO) method with a feedback loop is used to choose the best capacity of the equipment, and the Interior Point (IP) method algorithm is embedded in the MPSO to solve the operational optimization problem. The approach is applied to a mixed commercial and residential area of the Pearl River Delta (PRD) as a case study, verified the effectiveness of the planning method.

Abstract: This paper presents an analytical methodology of evaluating the economic viability of a CCHP system, over three alternative configurations: (1) boiler and electric chiller, which have been extendedly analyzed in literature, (2) boiler and gas driven absorption chiller and (3) reversible heat pump, which have been slightly investigated in comparison with CCHP systems. An adjusted Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE) is defined for those cases and used as a decision-making criterion. A sensitivity analysis is carried out to explore the effect of technical and economic data and load characteristics on the LCOE. The viability of the CCHP system is determined by comparing the LCOE with the electricity market prices. Two different economic viability problems are considered: (1) investing viability for new CCHP systems, and (2) operating viability for existing CCHP systems. The results demonstrate interesting interactions and encouraging perspectives, especially when CCHP system is used in combination with conventional technologies like boilers and chillers. Highlights: Analytical formulation of viability criteria for cogeneration systems. Viability mapping of cogeneration vis-a-vis three different conventional heating and cooling systems. Energy prices affect investment and operation decisions.

Abstract: Compressed air energy storage technologies can improve the supply capacity and stability of the electricity grid, particularly when fluctuating renewable energies are massively connected. While incorporating the combined cooling, heating and power systems into compressed air energy storage could achieve stable operation as well as efficient energy utilization. In this paper, a novel combined cooling, heating and power based compressed air energy storage system is proposed. The system combines a gas engine, supplemental heat exchangers and an ammonia-water absorption refrigeration system. The design trade-off between the thermodynamic and economic objectives, i.e., the overall exergy efficiency and the total specific cost of product, is investigated by an evolutionary multi-objective algorithm for the proposed combined system. It is found that, with an increase in the exergy efficiency, the total product unit cost is less affected in the beginning, while rises substantially afterwards. The best trade-off solution is selected with an overall exergy efficiency of 53.04% and a total product unit cost of 20.54 cent/kWh, respectively. The variation of decision variables with the exergy efficiency indicates that the compressor, turbine and heat exchanger preheating the inlet air of turbine are the key equipment to cost-effectively pursuit a higher exergy efficiency. It is also revealed by an exergoeconomic analysis that, for the best trade-off solution, the investment costs of the compressor and the two heat exchangers recovering compression heat and heating up compressed air for expansion should be reduced (particularly the latter), while the thermodynamic performance of the gas engine need to be improved significantly.
