As each new stage of technology builds on the last, advancements start to progress at an exponential rate. In order to know where we’re headed, it’s essential to know how we got here. What hidden stories lie behind the technology we use today? What drove the men and women who invented it? What were those special moments that changed the world forever? Dagogo Altraide explores these questions in a history of human innovation that reveals how new technologies influence each other, how our modern world came to be, and what future innovations might look like. From the electric world of Tesla and the steam engine revolution to the first computers, the invention of the internet, and the rise of artificial intelligence, New Thinking tells the stories of the men and women who changed our world with the power of new thought.

Book Description :

It was a revolutionary new source of energy that could save the planet from mass extinction. But when two chemists shared their scientific discovery with the world, there was anything but jubilation. Critics said it defied the laws of physics and couldn’t be replicated. It was shear luck that a small band of scientists were able to confirm the excess heat energy that Drs. Martin Fleischmann and Stanley Pons generated in tiny table-top cells. And there was more. Reports of unusual and anomalous effects. How did a small chemistry experiment turn into one of the greatest scientific mysteries ever encountered? And will ultra-clean power generators be ready to save the world before it’s too late? Now for the first time ever in graphical form, an incredible story of scientific courage based on true events. Scripted by Ruby Carat and illustrated by Matt Howarth, this Limited Edition 32-page B&W comic with full-color cover art delivers science like you’ve never seen it. Researchers Michael McKubre and Melvin Miles acted as consultants bringing the drama of Martin Fleischmann and Stanley Pons’ discovery succinctly to historical focus, showing how the globe came together to follow the truth, no matter where it would lead.

Book Description :

Nuclear fusion is the process by which two or more atomic nuclei join together, or "fuse", to form a single heavier nucleus. During this process, matter is not conserved because some of the mass of the fusing nuclei is converted to energy which is released. The binding energy of the resulting nucleus is greater than the binding energy of each of the nuclei that fused to produce it. Fusion is the process that powers active stars. Creating the required conditions for fusion on Earth is very difficult, to the point that it has not been accomplished at any scale for protium, the common light isotope of hydrogen that undergoes natural fusion in stars. In nuclear weapons, some of the energy released by an atomic bomb (fission bomb) is used for compressing and heating a fusion fuel containing heavier isotopes of hydrogen, and also sometimes lithium, to the point of "ignition". At this point, the energy released in the fusion reactions is enough to briefly maintain the reaction. Fusion-based nuclear power experiments attempt to create similar conditions using far lesser means, although to date these experiments have failed to maintain conditions needed for ignition long enough for fusion to be a viable commercial power source.

Book Description :

Frank Close, a leading physicist and talented popular science writer, reveals the true story of the cold fusion controversy--a story ignored until now in spite of the glare of publicity surrounding Martin Fleischmann and Stanley Pons. On March 23, 1989, these two Utah scientists held an astonishing press conference, maintaining that they had succeeded, working in secret, in harnessing atomic fusion. What was the basis for their claims to have achieved cold fusion in a test tube in a basement laboratory, while other scientists--using magnets as big as houses and temperatures hotter than those in the center of the sun--were failing to produce as much power as they were using? Why did Fleischmann and Pons proclaim their "discovery" at a news conference, when first announcements of scientific results are almost always made within the scientific community? Why did the full-blown media event inspired by their initial report cause governments to reorient their research programs in hopes of cornering the "new technology"? And why did some scientists recklessly abandon their traditional painstaking methods in haste to be first to prove or discredit the experiment? Acquainted at first hand with investigations of cold fusion on two continents, Close is uniquely qualified to probe the motivations behind Fleischmann's and Pons's startling assertions and to explore the intellectual and political turmoil that surrounded the cold fusion debate. The Fairy Tale of Nuclear Fusion

Language : En, Es, Fr & De

Book Description :

This carefully researched book presents facts and arguments showing, beyond a doubt, that nuclear fusion power will not be technically feasible in time to satisfy the world's urgent need for climate-neutral energy. The author describes the 70-year history of nuclear fusion; the vain attempts to construct an energy-generating nuclear fusion power reactor, and shows that even in the most optimistic scenario nuclear fusion, in spite of the claims of its proponents, will not be able to make a sizable contribution to the energy mix in this century, whatever the outcome of ITER. This implies that fusion power will not be a factor in combating climate change, and that the race to save the climate with carbon-free energy will have been won or lost long before the first nuclear fusion power station comes on line. Aimed at the general public as well as those whose decisions directly affect energy policy, this book will be a valuable resource for informing future debates.
