Book & CD. Cognitive Radio (CR technology) has the potential to provide more innovative, flexible, and comprehensive use of the radio frequency spectrum, while at the same time minimising the risk of interference to other spectrum users. CRs can be developed that have the technical capability to adapt their use of the spectrum in response to information external to the radio. As a result of this technical and operational flexibility, CR technologies may also make it possible to use spectrum that may be available in a particular geographic location or during a particular period of time and would otherwise go unused. At this time, there is not a clear boundary between CR and software defined radio (SDR) technologies. In many instances, SDR will be used as the basic platform on which to build CR technology. This book provides the first details of this new and innovative technology.

This book provides an overview of the latest research and development of new technologies for cognitive radio, mobile communications, and wireless networks. The contributors discuss the research and requirement analysis and initial standardization work towards 5G cellular systems and the capacity problems it presents. They show how cognitive radio, with the capability to flexibly adapt its parameters, has been proposed as the enabling technology for unlicensed secondary users to dynamically access the licensed spectrum owned by legacy primary users on a negotiated or an opportunistic basis. They go on to show how cognitive radio is now perceived in a much broader paradigm that will contribute to solve the resource allocation problem that 5G requirements raise. The chapters represent hand-selected expanded papers from EAI sponsored and hosted conferences such as the 12th EAI International Conference on Mobile and Ubiquitous Systems, the 11th EAI International Conference on Heterogeneous Networking for Quality, Reliability, Security and Robustness, the 10th International Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks, the 8th International Conference on Mobile Multimedia Communications, and the EAI International Conference on Software Defined Wireless Networks and Cognitive Technologies for IoT.

Book Description :

Cognitive radio technology is a smarter, faster, and more efficient way to transmit information to and from fixed, mobile, other wireless communication devices. Cognitive radio builds upon software-defined radio technology. A cognitive radio system is 'aware' of its operating environment and automatically adjusts itself to maintain desired communications—it’s like having a trained operator ‘inside’ the radio making constant adjustments for maximum performance. Operating frequency, power output, antenna orientation/beamwidth, modulation, and transmitter bandwidth are just a few of the operating parameters that can automatically be adjusted “on the fly in a cognitive radio system. Fette has constructed a cutting-edge volume that hits all of the important issues including research, management, and support. Cognitive techniques will be discussed such as position and network awareness, infrastructure and physical and link layer concerns. Though still a nascent technology, cognitive radio is being pushed by the US military and for mission-critical civilian communications (such as emergency and public safety services). *The first book on a revolutionary technology that will be critical to military, emergency, and public safety communications *A multi-contributed volume written by the leaders in this exciting new area *Describes the location-determination capabilities of cognitive radio (the precise location of all units in a cognitive radio network can be determined in real time)

Book Description :

Resource allocation is an important issue in wireless communication networks. In recent decades, cognitive radio-based networks have garnered increased attention and have been well studied to overcome the problem of spectrum scarcity in future wireless communications systems. Many new challenges in resource allocation appear in cognitive radio-based networks. This book focuses on effective resource allocation solutions in several important cognitive radio-based networks, including opportunistic spectrum access networks, cooperative sensing networks, cellular networks, high-speed vehicle networks, and smart grids. Cognitive radio networks are composed of cognitive, spectrum-agile devices capable of changing their configuration on the fly based on the spectral environment. This capability makes it possible to design flexible and dynamic spectrum access strategies with the purpose of opportunistically reusing portions of the spectrum temporarily vacated by licensed primary users. Different cognitive radio-based networks focus on different network resources, such as transmission slots, sensing nodes, transmission power, white space, and sensing channels. This book introduces several innovative resource allocation schemes for different cognitive radio-based networks according to their network characteristics: Opportunistic spectrum access networks – Introduces a probabilistic slot allocation scheme to effectively allocate the transmission slots to secondary users to maximize throughput Cooperative sensing networks – Introduces a new adaptive collaboration sensing scheme in which the resources of secondary users are effectively utilized to sense the channels for efficient acquisition of spectrum opportunities Cellular networks – Introduces a framework of cognitive radio-assisted cooperation for downlink transmissions to allocate transmission modes, relay stations, and transmission power/sub-channels to secondary users to maximize throughput High-speed vehicle networks – Introduces schemes to maximize the utilized TV white space through effective allocation of white space resources to secondary users Smart grids – Introduces effective sensing channel allocation strategies for acquiring enough available spectrum channels for communications between utility and electricity consumers

Book Description :

Document from the year 2022 in the subject Physics - Technical Physics, grade: A, , language: English, abstract: Cognitive Radio offers non-interfering use of spectrum which requires three main tasks: Spectrum Sensing, Spectrum Analysis and Spectrum Allocation. The aim of this study is to focus on spectrum sensing in cognitive radio which is a recently introduced technology in order to increase the spectrum efficiency. Increasing efficiency of the spectrum usage is an urgent need as the number of wireless users is increasing rapidly. Cognitive radio arises to be a good solution to spectral crowding problem by introducing the opportunistic usage of frequency bands that are not heavily occupied by licensed users (Primary user) since they cannot be utilized by users other (Secondary user) than the license owners at the moment. Cognitive radio can sense the spectrum and detect the idle frequency bands, thus secondary users can be allocated in those bands when primary users do not use those in order to avoid any interference to primary user by secondary users. Several Spectrum Sensing Methods proposed in the literature are theoretically analyzed and interpreted in the sense of advantages and drawbacks.

This book describes a communication paradigm that could shape the future of wireless communication networks, Opportunistic Spectrum Access (OSA) in Cognitive Radio Networks (CRN). While several theoretical OSA approaches have been proposed, they are challenged by the practical limitations of cognitive radios: the key enabling technology of OSA. This book presents an unprecedented formulation of the OSA problem in CNR that takes into account the practical limitations encountered due to existing technologies. Based on such a problem formulation, this book presents a framework and protocol details implementing the analytically-optimized solution of this problem. Unlike the state-of-the-art of CRN implementations that typically target software define radios which are not suitable for real systems, this book describes the implementation of distributed OSA, using practical radio transceiver technologies. It provides a thorough characterization of the gains available to theoretical OSA approaches if the practical limitations are taken into consideration. Book Description :

Over the past two decades, there have been rapid and significant developments in the field of wireless networking, especially with the emergence of wireless cognitive radio network technologies. There are, however, fundamental limits to communications and radio resource is scarce in the face of demand. This gives rise to new challenges in jointly managing resource allocation and interference management in a cognitive manner. The first cognitive radio wireless standard, IEEE 802.22, was only published in 2011, whereby white space referring to the unused frequency spectrums that are location-specific in television channels can be identified for use by other devices in a cognitive radio network. Recently, the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has also recognized the importance of wireless cognitive radio network technologies in military and civilian applications, and organized the 2017 DARPA Spectrum Collaboration Challenge to spur new ideas and experimentation to overcome spectrum scarcity. The need to cognitively access the increasingly-crowded electromagnetic spectrum has never been greater. This book, written by a team of leading experts, aims at providing the readers with a series of tutorials on a variety of cognitive radio network technologies ranging from efficient dynamic spectrum sharing and interference management to optimal resource allocation and to fundamental limits in communications. Emphasis is on cutting edge research in theoretical tools, algorithms and engineering insights to provide guiding principles, making this an ideal reference book.
