"In a cellular network, universal frequency reuse can be employed in neighboring cells to achieve higher spectral efficiency. In this case cell-edge user equipments (UE's) may experience severe inter-cell interference (ICI), which can impair the reliability of the network. Interference-aware multicell coordination, known as coordinated multipoint transmission/reception (CoMP), has been proposed to control ICI such that UE's can even benefit from it. CoMP schemes that can be deployed without the need for a feedback structure are referred to as open-loop CoMP schemes. The objective of this research is to study distributed coding/decoding schemes in a multiuser multicell system with open-loop CoMP for both uplink and downlink. Specifically, this research examines various coding/decoding techniques and develops distributed algorithms for an open-loop CoMP system. In addition, this research brings new perspectives and understanding to the CoMP system where both the coding and decoding are performed in a distributed manner for downlink and uplink. The proposed schemes are evaluated and compared with orthogonal coding/decoding schemes in an open-loop CoMP.For the downlink open-loop CoMP, a distributed coding scheme is proposed where multiple eNodeBs transmit signal to a group of 2 or 4 UE's. In order to reduce the UE's decoding complexity, a distributed decoder is also proposed. Compared to the optimal non- distributed decoder, the proposed distributed decoder reduces the decoding complexity up to 50%. The performance of the proposed scheme is compared with the orthogonal space frequency coding in CoMP and non-CoMP schemes. Lower and upper bounds for the transmission rate of the proposed scheme are derived analytically and it is shown that it outperforms the orthogonal space frequency coding in CoMP. Also, simulation results show that it gains performance in terms of bit error rate (BER).For the uplink CoMP, UE's transmit data to eNodeBs. A distributed coding scheme is proposed for the UE side. Groups of 2 or 4 UE's transmit their signal using all carrier frequencies available to the group using the proposed codebook. Receiving eNodeBs can decoded the data of each UE independently. The proposed scheme for uplink has low coding complexity and is scalable, meaning that it can be deployed gradually. Also, it is shown by means of simulation that the proposed scheme can provide system performance improvement." --

It is well understood that multiple antennas can be used to effectively combat the fading in wireless links and increase the channel capacity by exploiting the spatial diversity. This dissertation addresses two main techniques to approach the increased capacity: space-time coding/modulation and iterative decoding. For space-time coding we proposed a systematic and closed form construction of complex orthogonal space-time block codes of rates (k + 1)/(2 k) for 2 k or 2 k & minus; 1 transmit antennas, where k is any positive integer. The rates of our construction are the maximum rates for complex orthogonal designs without linear processing. Furthermore, another closed form construction is proposed when the number of transmit antennas is a multiple of 4, where the delay size is only half of the designs known previously. This dissertation also presented a new recursive space-time trellis codes design from differential encoding, which can be applied to serially concatenated system to achieve turbo gain through iterative decoding. We proposed a new design criterion to obtain the recursive trellis with larger error event length, which makes it possible to increase the performance by careful design of the STBC mapped to the states. By using the new criterion we developed a class of recursive space-time trellis with number of states M 2 for any size of constellation M. For the application of iterative decoding in MIMO system, we presented an iterative decoding/demodulation technique for an orthogonal space-time coded continuous-phase modulation system. By taking advantage of the orthogonal structure, the complexity of extrinsic information extraction can be significantly reduced at each iteration. We also investigated the concatenation of a low density generator matrix code as an outer encoder and a recursive space time trellis code as an inner coder to increase the system performance.

Constrained Coding and Soft Iterative Decoding is the first work to combine the issues of constrained coding and soft iterative decoding (e.g., turbo and LDPC codes) from a unified point of view. Since constrained coding is widely used in magnetic and optical storage, it is necessary to use some special techniques (modified concatenation scheme or bit insertion) in order to apply soft iterative decoding. Recent breakthroughs in the design and decoding of error-control codes (ECCs) show significant potential for improving the performance of many communications systems. ECCs such as turbo codes and low-density parity check (LDPC) codes can be represented by graphs and decoded by passing probabilistic (a.k.a. `soft') messages along the edges of the graph. This message-passing algorithm yields powerful decoders whose performance can approach the theoretical limits on capacity. This exposition uses `normal graphs,' introduced by Forney, which extend in a natural manner to block diagram representations of the system and provide a simple unified framework for the decoding of ECCs, constrained codes, and channels with memory. Soft iterative decoding is illustrated by the application of turbo codes and LDPC codes to magnetic recording channels. For magnetic and optical storage, an issue arises in the use of constrained coding, which places restrictions on the sequences that can be transmitted through the channel; the use of constrained coding in combination with soft ECC decoders is addressed by the modified concatenation scheme also known as `reverse concatenation.' Moreover, a soft constraint decoder yields additional coding gain from the redundancy in the constraint, which may be of practical interest in the case of optical storage. In addition, this monograph presents several other research results (including the design of sliding-block lossless compression codes, and the decoding of array codes as LDPC codes). Constrained Coding and Soft Iterative Decoding will prove useful to students, researchers and professional engineers who are interested in understanding this new soft iterative decoding paradigm and applying it in communications and storage systems.

Existing software applications should be redesigned if programmers want to benefit from the performance offered by multi- and many-core architectures. Performance scalability now depends on the possibility of finding and exploiting enough Thread-Level Parallelism (TLP) in applications for using the increasing numbers of cores on a chip. Video decoding is an example of an application domain with increasing computational requirements every new generation. This is due, on the one hand, to the trend towards high quality video systems (high definition and frame rate, 3D displays, etc) that results in a continuous increase in the amount of data that has to be processed in real-time. On the other hand, there is the requirement to maintain high compression efficiency which is only possible with video codes like H.264/AVC that use advanced coding techniques. In this book, the parallelization of H.264/AVC decoding is presented as a case study of parallel programming. H.264/AVC decoding is an example of a complex application with many levels of dependencies, different kernels, and irregular data structures. The book presents a detailed methodology for parallelization of this type of applications. It begins with a description of the algorithm, an analysis of the data dependencies and an evaluation of the different parallelization strategies. Then the design and implementation of a novel parallelization approach is presented that is scalable to many core architectures. Experimental results on different parallel architectures are discussed in detail. Finally, an outlook is given on parallelization opportunities in the upcoming HEVC standard.
