The objective of this study is to investigate the utility of acoustic tomography for performance assessment of a generic low frequency active sonar system. The performance of the sonar is simulated using tomography-derived sound speed data versus a range independent ocean model. The ocean environment used in the simulation is 159 tomographic snapshots of the Barents Sea Polar Front, taken every 5 minutes in August 1992. The modeled sonar system consists of a 1000 Hz source with a source level of 205.5 dB and a towed horizontal array of hydrophones. The system is derived from unclassified parameters of ATAS (Active Towed Array Sonar), built by Thomson Sintra ASM and British Aerospace SEMA, and the experimental ALF sonar, designed by FEL-TNO (the Netherlands) and built by Thomson Sintra ASM. The tomographic images over a range of 26 km provide a realistic ocean in which system performance is assessed. This study used a broadband, coupled normal mode, propagation model and assumed a noise-limited condition. The probability of detection calculated as a function of time for 13 hours is compared with that estimated using a range- and time-independent assumption. The utility of coastal acoustic tomography for tactical applications is discussed. (AN).

A direct insertion scheme for assimilating coastal acoustic tomographic (CAT) vertical temperature sections into a multilevel, coastal primitive equation model for the Gulf of Sirte (Lybia) is investigated using computer simulation experiments. Although the model was developed for the whole Mediterranean Sea (MED), only a model sub-domain covering the Gulf of Sirte was used in this study. The model has realistic coastlines and bottom topography, and a coastal-following, curvilinear, nearly orthogonal, horizontal coordinate system with a horizontal resolution of about 10 by 10 km. The grid of the model was designed using a grid generation/focusing technique. The model has complete thermodynamics, second order turbulence closure, and 16 bottom-following (sigma) vertical levels. To generate the true ocean for this study, the model was first spun up for 30 days with the Levitus temperature and salinity and ECMWF wind climatologies, and then run for one year and more. The last 60 days of this control run were taken to represent actuality.

In recent years, research on acoustic remote sensing of the ocean has evolved considerably, especially in studying complex physical and biological processes in shallow water environments. To review the state of the art, an international workshop was held at Carvoeiro, Portugal, in March 1999, bringing together leading international researchers in the field. In contrast to much of the recent theoretical work, emphasis was placed on the experimental validation of the techniques. This volume, based on presentations at this workshop, summarizes a range of diverse and innovative applications. The invited contributions explore the use of acoustics to measure bottom properties and morphology, as well as to probe buried objects within the sediment. Within the water column, sound is applied to imaging of oceanographic features such as currents and tides or monitoring of marine life. The electronic emissions of a low frequency sound source placed by the Acoustic Thermometry of Ocean Climate (ATOC) project on Pioneer Seamount were monitored by a bottom lying receiver on Sur Ridge from April 1996 to February 1997. The processed signals show a stable arrival pattern that was repeated in all the transmissions during the 11 months. Using the processed data, a tomographic analysis to study the coastal ocean variability along this California transmission path was conducted. Systematically, the analysis involved forward acoustic modeling of the arrival structure using ray theory, associating the observed arrivals with the modeled arrivals, extracting the travel times of the arrivals, inverting the travel times for temporal and spatial temperature changes, and interpreting the observed temperature variations. In particular, the tomographic estimate was compared to the temperature and wind measurements from an in situ mooring deployed by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institution (MBARI). The comparison show that the tomographic estimate is of high quality and that the observed temperature variations were linked to coastal upwelling and downwelling events. The data, methods and result, demonstrating fully the feasibility of using tomography to study coastal temperature variability in central California on a long term basis, are presented.

The limiting influence of the environment on sonar has long been recognised as a major challenge to science and technology. As the area of interest shifts towards the lit toral, environmental influences become dominant both in time and space. In many instances the need is for on-line adaptation of systems to changing circumstances whilst other needs are for the Ionger term planning activities. This book and the attached full-color CD are the proceedings of a conference organ ised by the SACLANT Undersea Research Centre, held at Villa Marigola, Lerici, Italy, on 16-20 September 2002. The fundamental problems associated with environmental 1 variability and sonar were explored at a previous SACLANTCEN conference in 1990. These problems have not gone away but, on the one hand are exaggerated by the move to the littoral and on the other hand, are open to treatrnent in new ways that advances in technology and computer power allow.
