Book Description :

This book provides a concise overview of the possible clinical applications of standard EEG in clinical psychiatry. After a short history, the book describes the physiologic basis of the EEG signal, then reviews the principles of EEG in terms of technical backgrounds and requirements, EEG recording and signal analysis, with plentiful illustrations of the most frequent biological or technical artefacts. Normal EEG patterns and waveforms for easy reference are clearly presented, before the detailed description of abnormal patterns. With the basic information in hand, the reader progresses to an account of the role of EEG in the diagnostic work up in psychiatry, covering nonconvulsive status epilepticus, frontal lobe seizures and non-epileptic seizures. The clinical application of EEG in both childhood and adult disorders follows, including many case vignettes. The effects of psychotropic drugs on EEG are highlighted. The book closes with a discussion of currently available certification venues for Clinical Neurophysiology along with limitations of each venue. It calls for the development of training guidelines and certification processes specific to Psychiatric Electrophysiology. The material is clearly presented throughout, with plenty of figures, tables with summaries of relevant findings, flow diagrams for diagnostic work-up, boxes with learning points, and short lists of key references. We fully expect the book will become the standard teaching source for psychiatry residents and fellows, as well as a useful resource for practising psychiatrists and clinical psychologists. Praise for the book: "This distinguished group of editors has put together chapters that represent an excellent practical handbook on electroencephalography in clinical psychiatry, now a very important topic. I highly recommend it not only to psychiatrists, but also to anyone interested in neuroscience." John R. Hughes, DM (Oxon), MD, PhD, Professor of Neurology, University of Illinois Medical Center, at Chicago, Illinois, USA

Book Description :

Neurologic and neuropsychiatric disorders are of great importance to societies and they also raise special considerations in epidemiological research methodology. Not only do neurologic and neuropsychiatric disorders form a major group of disorders associated with ageing populations, but those disorders that occur in earlier life can be associated with severe individual, family, and societal distress and burden. The inter-relationship of syndromes and disorders is a topic of major interest and growing biological insights across psychiatry and neurology. This includes not only overlaps in neurodegenerative syndromes but also those related to other systems such as metabolic, inflammatory, immune and vascular disorders. Part of the Oxford Textbooks in Clinical Neurology series, the Oxford Textbook of Neurologic and Neuropsychiatric Epidemiology is designed to focus on the overlaps and inter-relationships between neuro-epidemiological disorders, as well as on ways to harmonise large cohort studies to maximise opportunities for determining causes related to rarer disorders. Divided into three main parts, the book covers 1) the principles of neurologic and neuropsychiatric epidemiology; 2) specific neuropsychiatric disorders and their inter-relationships and 3) the implications of neuro-epidemiologic research for patient populations and current medical practice. This comprehensive work serves as an invaluable reference to current neuro-epidemiological methods for neurologists, psychiatrists, and senior trainees in those disciplines, as well as public health practitioners and students with an interest in neurology and neuropsychiatry.

Book Description :

The forced migration of neuroscientists, both during and after the Second World War, is of growing interest to international scholars. Of particular interest is how the long-term migration of scientists and physicians has affected both the academic migrants and their receiving environments. As well as the clash between two different traditions and systems, this migration forced scientists and physicians to confront foreign institutional, political, and cultural frameworks when trying to establish their own ways of knowledge generation, systems of logic, and cultural mentalities. The twentieth century has been called the century of war and forced-migration, since it witnessed two devastating world wars, prompting a massive exodus that included many neuroscientists and psychiatrists. Fascism in Italy and Spain beginning in the 1920s, Nazism in Germany and Austria between the 1930s and 1940s, and the impact of the Soviet occupation of Eastern Europe all forced more than two thousand researchers with prior education in neurology, psychiatry, and the basic brain research disciplines to leave their scientific and academic home institutions. This edited volume, comprising of thirteen chapters written by international specialists, reflects on the complex dimensions of intellectual migration in the neurosciences and illustrates them by using relevant case studies, biographies, and surveys. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of the History of the Neurosciences.

Book Description :

Encephalitis lethargica (‘sleeping sickness’) was a mysterious disorder that swept the world in the decade following the First World War, before disappearing without its cause having been identified. Around 85% of its victims, predominantly children, adolescents and younger adults, survived the acute disorder, but most developed severe neurological syndromes, particularly severe post-encephalitic parkinsonism and other severe motor abnormalities, that incapacitated them for the remainder of their lives. Despite its brief history, encephalitis lethargica played a major role in a variety medical discussions between the two World Wars, as this epitome of neuropsychiatric disease – attacking both motor and mental functions – appeared just as the separation of neurology and psychiatry had reached a critical point. Encephalitis lethargica sufferers presented an unprecedented combination of neurologic and psychiatric symptoms – including previously puzzling phenomena primarily associated with schizophrenia and hysteria, as well as behavioral changes and attention deficit disorders in children – that not only underscored the unity of mind and movement in the CNS, but also illuminated the critical role played by subcortical structures in consciousness and other higher mental functions that had formerly been associated with the soul and more recently presumed to be localized to the human cerebral cortex. Encephalitis lethargica exerted a greater influence on clinical and theoretic neuroscientific thought between the two World Wars than any other single disorder and had an enduring impact upon neurology and psychiatry. This book will be of interest to an educated audience active or interested in clinical (neurology, psychiatry, psychology) or laboratory neuroscience, particularly those interested in neuropsychiatry, as well as to those interested in the history of the biomedical sciences.

Book Description :

Blackwell's Neurology and Psychiatry Access Series: Adult Psychiatry provides a practical discussion of psychopathology and aids the non-psychiatrist in recognizing psychiatric symptoms and syndromes and understanding the principles of management strategies. Although this book is aimed at primary care physicians, the information is presented in a conceptual format that medical students and junior residents may find useful. Psychologists, social workers and counsellors will find this book aids their work. The book is divided into three main sections: Section 1 covers the assessment and evaluation of psychiatric disorders; Section 2 considers important aspects of psychopathology; Section 3 explores important topics in clinical medicine including the interface between psychiatry and primary care, general psychiatric treatment, practical genetics, age-related considerations, suicide, medicolegal issues, and ethics. All chapters from the first edition have been revised and updated. Two new chapters have been added to this edition: obesity and binge eating disorder, and the impact of psychiatric disorders on medical illness. Blackwell's Neurology and Psychiatry Access Series has been designed to teach the art of diagnosis and treatment of neurologic and mental disease, applying both deductive and inductive reasoning to arrive at a diagnosis and formulate a plan for treatment. The format of this book is unique in the way it presents information, using 'boxes' designed to provide the reader with additional information and 'wisdom' from experienced contributors rather than just clinical knowledge. This approach introduces an inductive nosologic approach to diagnosis, employing discriminating, consistent, and variable features. Other boxes include: * Pearls and Perils * Consider Consultation When... * Key Clinical Questions and What They Unlock (new in this Edition) These boxes of information and questions prompt the clinician with time-saving questions that "cut to the chase." This is a clinically relevant, multifunction text.
