Book Description :

This book examines the British colonial expansion in the so-called unadministered hill tracts of the Indo-Burma frontier and the change of colonial policy from non-intervention to intervention. The book begins with the end of the First Anglo-Burmese War (1824–26), which resulted in the British annexation of the North-Eastern Frontier of Bengal and the extension of its sway over the Arakan and Manipur frontiers, and closes with the separation of Burma from India in 1937. The volume documents the resistance of the indigenous hill peoples to colonial penetration; administrative policies such as disarmament; subjugation of the local chiefs under a colonial legal framework and its impact; standardisation of ‘Chin’ as an ethnic category for the fragmented tribes and sub-tribes; and the creation and consolidation of the Chin Hills District as a political entity to provide an extensive account of British relations with the indigenous Chin/Zo community from 1824 to 1935. By situating these within the larger context of British imperial policy, the book makes a critical analysis of the British approach towards the Indo-Burma frontier. With its coverage of key archival sources and literature, this book will interest scholars and researchers in modern Indian history, military history, colonial history, British history, South Asian history and Southeast Asian history.

Book Description :

New York Times bestseller Introduction by New York Times bestselling author and famous minor television personality John Hodgman One of my dad’s favorite jokes about getting older was: “I went out for coffee when I was twenty-one and when I got back I was fifty-eight!” I get what he meant now. Time flies. My first book, If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a "B" Movie Actor, was published back in 2001 and it chronicles the adventures of a “mid-grade, kind of hammy actor" (my words), cutting his teeth on exploitation movies far removed from mainstream Hollywood. This next book, an “Act II” if you will, could be considered my “maturing years” in show business, when I began to say “no” more often and gravitated toward self-generated material. Taking stock in the overall quality of my life, I fled Los Angeles and moved to a remote part of Oregon to renew, regroup and reload. If that sounds tame, the journey from Evil Dead to Spider-Man to Burn Notice was long, with plenty of adventures/mishaps along the way. I never pictured myself hovering above Baghdad in a Blackhawk helicopter, facing a pack of wild dogs in Bulgaria, or playing an aging Elvis Presley with cancer on his penis - how can you predict this stuff? The sheer lunacy of show business is part of the fun for me and I hope you'll come along for the ride. – Bruce “Don’t Call Me Ash” Campbell

Chin up, Britain! Now is the time to return to basic commonsense and embrace a new austerity. Can't afford a holiday? Slather on some sun tan lotion that smells of coconuts, at least you'll smell like you're on holiday. Don't know what to do with a left-over half a banana? Discard it surreptitiously on the floor of a government-owned building, 'accidentally' slip on it and claim thousands of pounds of compensation. Can't afford new shoes? Polish your old ones. And if all else fails, why not sell your children on ebay? In her inimitable style, Jenny Éclair brings you helpful and hilarious tips for changing the way you live, including beauty on a budget, identifying your swappable skills (burying dead animals, tuning a freeview box), improving manners on public transport, the fine art of 'out-presenting' and a guide to gate-crashing.

Book Description :

I Chin Ching or Yijin jing roughly translates to "muscle/tendon change classic" or the "change of tendon and muscle." The idea is that by tensing your muscles through static holds/stretches and dynamic motions you can build stronger, more flexible muscles and tendons, while achieving better balance and coordination. That's a lot of promise for just 49 exercises! There are many legends on I Chin Ching and how it came to be. Some of the legends are vague and some are contradictory so this book will briefly share the legend of Bodhidharma and will focus the majority of the book on the following: Providing a visual manual on how to do 49 I Chin Ching exercises with proper technique Providing realistic variations to help you build strength, flexibility, and balance so you can eventually achieve some of the tougher exercises The Legend Bodhidharma, a Buddhist monk from India, traveled the Himalayan mountains to bring Buddhism to China. As he encountered the Shaolin monasteries, Bodhidharma found the monks to be very weak and unable to sustain long meditations. Therefore he taught the monks several exercises to change their physical bodies and build stronger, more flexible muscles which would result in even stronger minds. These exercises became known as the I Chin Ching exercises. Many of the exercises are similar to or are exact replicas of yoga postures, perhaps as an influence from Bodhidharma's Indian roots. ""Practicing the I Chin Ching exercises has provided significant physical benefits to me and has helped me achieve various fitness goals I have as a martial artist, professional dancer, yogi, and runner. It has taken me over a decade to be able to do all 49 exercises and a few of the really tough ones...I can only do for a moment before crashing to the floor! I love the never-ending challenge that these exercises bring me."" -Katy Moeggenberg, Author

Book Description :

From one of the most outstanding figures of modern Chinese literature . . . A moving, colorful novel that reflects a period of great turmoil in Chinese history. Originally written for and about educated Chinese youth in the 1930s, Pa Chins political ideas formed from three Western ideologies: international anarchism, Russian populism, and the French Revolution. These influences melded with his personal exposure to civil wars, the early existence of the Communist Party in China, the war with Japan, and the New Culture Movement to become the impetus for this inspirational novel. Family is the story of the Kao family compound, consisting of four generations plus servants. It is essentially a picture of the struggle between the traditional and the modern, age and youth, Confucianism and individualismold China and the new tide rising to destroy itas manifested in the daily lives of the Kao family, particularly the three young Kao brothers. The complex passions aroused in Family and in the reader are an indication of the universality of human experience. Furthermore, anyone interested in the society and history of modern China will be captivated by both the plot and the vast amount of cultural materials displayed in this highly celebrated novel. Olga Langs introduction and Sidney Shapiros smooth translation elucidate the larger context of the times and the genius of Pa Chins writing.

The book "CHIN NA FA" was written by Liu Jin Sheng in collaboration with Zhao Jiang. The first edition of the book was issued in July of 1936 as a manual for the Police Academy of Zhejiang province. The book was printed by the publishing house Shan Wu in Shanghai. "...If you are in command of this technique, you can sway the destiny of the enemy. You can kill your enemy, cause unbearable pain, tear his muscles and sinews, break his bones or make him unconscious for some time and completely disable him to resist. Even a woman or a physically weak man who mastered this technique can curb a strong enemy. This technique demands deftness and skill, not brute force. It is necessary to train oneself daily to make the body flexible and nimble, but "hardness" must be hidden inside this "softness." /Author Liu Jin Sheng. Book Description :

Most Hollywood biographies are little more than 500-page musings on the 'when-I-met...' theme, filled with famous names, love affairs and clichés of a 'meteoric rise' or 'tragic fall'. Bruce Campbell's If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor is the boisterous antidote to such convention. Campbell is the ultimate 'B' Movie actor. Star of the cult Evil Dead trilogy, with a CV that ranges from buddy Sam Raimi's Spider-Man, through The X-Files and Xena: Warrior Princess, to the less-than-glamorous Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters, you've probably never heard of him. But his is one heck of a story! The popularity of Bruce, the cult hero of cable TV and Hollywood's second rung, is burning brighter than ever, his legion of fans undiminished after over thirty years. Insightful, encouraging and brilliantly funny, If Chins Could Kill! is a brilliant place to start for those unfamiliar with his work. For everyone else, it acts as a wonderful reminder for just why they fell in love with him in the first place.
