In and around porous systems with at least one characteristic dimension below 100 nm, solid/liquid interfaces play a key role in surface-charge-governed transport, separation processes and energy storage devices. Nanopores with well-defined geometry and chemical characteristics have emerged as valuable tools to unravel interactions between external and induced electric fields and the underlying transport, in the presence of embedded charges. In this thesis, theoretical and numerical investigations of electrokinetic effects in soft cylindrical nanochannels with uniformly distributed surface charges are carried out within continuum mean-field approximations. The aim is to provide a theoretical framework through which one can access a comprehensive understanding of the coupling between electrokinetic transport, double-layer charging and wall deformations in nanochannels embedded in soft polymeric membranes. In the first part of the thesis, numerical calculations using the coupled continuum mean-field equations are conducted to quantify ion and fluid transport in a finite, cylindrical and rigid nanochannel connected to cylindrical electrolytic reservoirs. Results of these calculations, verified by experiments, serve as a guide for theoretical investigations in later components of the thesis. Subsequently, the transport of protons and water in a long, negatively charged channel is studied from a theoretical point of view. A theoretical model is developed that describes nonlinear coupling between wall deformation and water and proton flows in a charged, eformable nanochannel whose viscoelasticity is governed by the linear Kelvin-Voigt model. In addition to focusing on transport phenomena in an open nanochannel, we direct attention to the equilibrium structure of the electric double layers. This was achieved by considering a physical situation where the charged channel is finite and sealed at both ends by metal electrodes under external voltage bias. Size-modified mean-field equations were used to account for finite ion sizes, subject to a self-consistent electroneutrality condition which demands that the net amount of charge on both electrode surfaces balances. Equilibrium ion distributions and differential capacitance curves are presented and analysed. Motivated by electroactuators, the last part of the thesis added deformations of the channel walls to the closed-channel system modelling.

For the past decade, new research fields utilizing microfluidics have been formed. General micro-integration methods were proposed, and the supporting fundamental technologies were widely developed. These methodologies have made various applications in the fields of analytical and chemical synthesis, and their superior performances such as rapid, simple, and high efficient processing have been proved. Recently, the space is further downscaling to 101–103nm scale (we call the space extended-nano space). The extended-nano space located between the conventional nanotechnology (100–101nm) and microtechnology (>1μm), and the research tools are not well established. In addition, the extended-nano space is a transient space from single molecules to bulk condensed phase, and fluidics and chemistry are not unknown. For these purposes, basic methodologies were developed, and new specific phenomena in fluidics and chemistry were found. These new phenomena were applied to unique chemical operations such as concentration and ion selection. The new research fields which are now being created are quite different from those in microspace. Unique devices are also increasingly being reported. In this book, we describe the fundamental technologies for extended-nano space and show the unique liquid properties found in this space and applications for single molecule or cell analysis. The research area is very new and hence, exciting. In contrast to other specialized areas, the research fields require wide knowledge (chemistry, fluidics, mechanics, photonics, biology etc.) and state-of-the-art technologies (bottom-up and top-down fabrication for various hard and soft materials, precise fluidic control, single molecule detection methods, and particle surface modification methods etc.), which have not been not covered by conventional review papers or books. Therefore, researchers or students new to the field need a new book covering these fields including recent research topics, applications and problems to be solved in the future. Abstract: Recently, nanomaterials have been vigorously studied for the development of biosensors. Among them, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have stimulated enormous interest for constructing biosensors due to their unique physical and chemical properties such as high surface-to-volume ratio, high conductivity, high strength and chemical inertness. Our study is to develop a general design of biosensors based on vertically aligned CNT arrays. Glucose biosensor is selected as the model system to verify the design of biosensors. In the preliminary design, glucose oxidase (GOx) is attached to the walls of the porous alumina membrane by adsorption. Porous highly ordered anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) prepared by two-step anodization are used as templates. Deposited gold on both sides of template surfaces serve as a contact and prevent non-specific adhesion of GOx on the surface. In order to find out optimized thickness of gold coating, the oxidation and reduction (redox) reaction in [Fe(CN)6]3\168C /[Fe(CN)6]4\168C system is monitored by Cyclic Voltammetry (CV). Subsequently, enzymatic redox reaction in glucose solutions is also attempted by CV. We expect protein layers with GOx form a conductive network. However, no obvious enzymatic redox reaction is detected in the voltammogram. To take advantage of the attractive properties of CNTs, the design of enzyme electrodes is modified by attaching CNT onto the sidewalls of AAO template nanopores and then immobilizing GOx to the sidewalls and tips of CNTs. AAO templates provided vertical, parallel, well separated and evenly spacing nanochannels for CNT growth. Cobalt is used as a catalyst to fabricate CNTs. As a result, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are fabricated inside the AAO templates by catalytic chemical vapor deposition (CCVD). Characterization of AAO templates and cobalt electrochemical deposition are employed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS). Detailed structure and texture of CNTs are examined by transmission electron microscope (TEM).
