Book Description :

In the early seventeenth century, as the vehement aggression of the early Reformation faded, the Church of England was able to draw upon scholars of remarkable ability to present a more thoughtful defence of its position. The Caroline Divines, who flourished under King Charles I, drew upon vast erudition and literary skill, to refute the claims of the Church of Rome and affirm the purity of the English religious settlement. This book examines their writings in the context of modern ecumenical dialogue, notably that of the Anglican-Roman Catholic International Commission (ARCIC) to ask whether their arguments are still valid, and indeed whether they can contribute to contemporary ecumenical progress. Drawing upon an under-used resource within Anglicanism’s own theological history, this volume shows how the restatement by the Caroline Divines of the catholic identity of the Church prefigured the work of ARCIC, and provides Anglicans with a vocabulary drawn from within their own tradition that avoids some of the polemical and disputed formulations of the Roman Catholic tradition.

Music in Willa Cather s Fiction

Music in Willa Cather s Fiction Book
Author : Richard Giannone
Publisher : U of Nebraska Press
Release : 2001-01-01
ISBN : 9780803270992
Language : En, Es, Fr & De

DOWNLOAD

Book Description :

Music is everywhere in Willa Cather's fiction: as a subject, in the background, slyly commenting on the action, connecting characters to a distant world, or revealing their interior worlds. Not merely incidental or ornamental, though, music is intrinsic to Cather's work, a distinctive quality of her creation and expression, and it is in this light that Richard Giannone considers Cather's art. Music in Willa Cather's Fiction is the definitive study of its subject. The first work to examine the complex thematic and structural forms that music acquires in Cather's narratives, Giannone's book uses this musical approach as a way of seeing into the author's artistic sensibility, the evolution of her art, and her total achievement. ø Progressing chronologically, Giannone shows how Cather's view and use of music changed over time. From what her early journalistic pieces on music and musicians reveal about her attitude and anticipate in her later work, Giannone moves to Cather's early stories to identify the trend of some of her artistic choices, the direction of her stylistic development, and the complication of her moral interest as these are manifested in musical references. In her novels and later stories, he emphasizes the contribution of music to the individual work, as well as the allusions and connections that sound throughout her oeuvre.

African Pentecostalism in Britain

African Pentecostalism in Britain Book
Author : Katharine Stockland
Publisher : Routledge
Release : 2022-05-23
ISBN : 1000588297
Language : En, Es, Fr & De

DOWNLOAD

Book Description :

Based on ethnographic research among African Pentecostal Christians living in the UK, this book addresses themes of migration and community formation, religious identity and practice, and social and political exclusion. With attention to strained kinship relationships, precarious labour conditions, and struggles for legal and social legitimacy, it explores the ways in which intimacy with a Pentecostal God – and with fellow Christians – has been shaped by the challenges of everyday life for Africans in the UK. A study of religious subjectivity and the success of the so-called ‘prosperity’ gospel, African Pentecostalism in Britain examines the manner in which the presence of God is realised for believers through their complex and often-fraught relationships of trust and intimacy with others. As such, it will appeal to sociologists and anthropologists with interests in migration and religion.

Book Description :

When they pulled up to his mom's house, Destiny was the first one out. She was dead tired and just wanted to nap. “My babies! I'm so glad you all made it.” Caroline met them on the porch. “Hey, ma.” Adonis hugged her and then Destiny hugged her before she took the baby out of her hand. “Look at granny's baby,” she cooed over AJ. “But I thought I was your baby, granny,” Serenity pouted. “You sure are my baby. Come give me some love, sugar.” Caroline loved her grandbabies. “Oh my goodness, he looks just like you, Des.” “I know right. All he has of his daddy is skin tone,” Destiny replied. “Well y'all come on in here.” They went inside. “Where is Tamara?” Adonis asked about his sister. “She's at work but she'll be here later,” Caroline replied as she kissed all over AJ's face. “Oh ok.” He responded. “Adonis take y'all stuff to the guestroom and you know ReRe has her own room here now 'cause I want to start getting her during the summers,” she said, referring to Serenity by the nickname she had given her. “Nah, I'm getting a hotel room. Des and the kids are staying here with y'all.” Caroline looked at him like he had grown two heads. “And why the hell can't you stay here with your family?” His mom still didn't know that he had a new girlfriend. It was now or never. “My girlfriend coming up here to kick it with me,” he sort of mumbled. Even though he was a grown man, his mothers' opinion mattered. “What the hell did you just say?” Caroline only cursed when she was pissed. “Look ma, not now okay.” He let out a frustrated sigh. He knew how much his family liked Destiny but they had to accept the fact that they weren't together. “So you brought Destiny and my grandbabies up here knowing your girlfriend was coming too?” “Yeah, man. But it's not even like that. I invited my girl before I knew Des was coming.” Adonis felt like a little kid who was being reprimanded by his mother. “Well, the minute you found out Des was coming, you should have canceled that other chick.” Caroline was so disgusted by her son that she got up and left the room. “Look, I didn't know coming here would cause problems. I was just trying to make it better for AJ.” Destiny was apologetic. “Nah, Des, you good, ma. But I need to go take care of something. I'll be back later.” He stood to leave. “Okay.” Destiny hated to see him leave because she knew he was going to meet up with Nikki. Yeah, she was actually jealous.

The Disciplined Heart

Book Description :

Often what passes for love is a product of self-deception and wishful thinking. Genuine love, according to philosopher Caroline J. Simon, must be based on knowledge of reality, and Christianity affirms that reality includes not just who people are but the unfolding story of who God intends them to be. Taking the use of narrative seriously, The Disciplined Heart draws on works of literature to display a Christian understanding of love in its various forms: love of self, love of neighbor, friendship, romantic love, and marital love. Using instances of love and its counterfeits in novels and short stories by such authors as Flannery O'Connor, Leo Tolstoy, George Eliot, and F. Scott Fitzgerald, Simon constructs an account of love's joys and obligations that both charms and instructs. Learned, astute, and elegantly written, The Disciplined Heart is a groundbreaking work at the intersection of theology, philosophy, and literary analysis.
