Book Description :

Carboranes Second Edition is designed as a comprehensive source of information in a field that has experienced enormous growth in both its fundamental and applied aspects in the four decades since the publication of Carboranes (1970). During this long period thousands of original research papers have appeared, along with many review articles and book chapters dealing with aspects of carborane chemistry. As carborane science has grown in complexity, and applications have advanced steadily in areas such as medicine, nanostructured and electroactive materials, catalysis, polymers, and others, the need for a monograph covering the entire area in a unified treatment has become increasingly apparent. This volume has two principal objectives, the first of which is to provide a readable and concise introduction to the basic principles underlying the synthesis, structures, reactivity, and applications of carboranes and metallacarboranes at a level suitable for readers in industry and academe who are not trained in boron chemistry but find themselves working with, or lecturing about carboranes. Secondly, the book furnishes a trove of detailed information for workers active in carborane science and associated technologies. To that end, it incorporates tables listing thousands of specific compounds keyed to literature references (supplemented by additional information available on a website), together with more than 2,000 molecular structure drawings that illuminate the accompanying discussion. Thorough treatment of the synthesis, structures, and reactions of carboranes, heterocarboranes, and metallacarboranes in the first 13 chapters is followed by four chapters detailing advances in practical applications in polymer science, catalysis, medicine, and other areas. Includes over 2,000 molecular structure drawings throughout the text Features tables listing thousands of compounds with key literature references Extended and updated tables provided online via the book's website

Carboranes offers a comprehensive treatment of carborane chemistry and covers topics ranging from structures and chemical bonding to the degradation of the icosahedral cage. Carborane polymers as well as small nido- and closo-carboranes, intermediate closo-carboranes, and o-, m-, and p-carboranes are also discussed. This book is comprised of nine chapters and begins with an overview of the chemistry and properties of carboranes. The discussion then turns to the molecular structures of polyhedral carboranes and open-cage carboranes, along with the isomerism and rearrangement of carboranes; nomenclature and numbering systems used for carboranes; and chemical bonding in boranes and carboranes. The following chapters explore the synthesis, reactions, structures, and properties of small nido- and closo-carboranes, intermediate closo-carboranes, and o-, m-, and p-carboranes. The reactions of boranes and alkylboranes with alkynes as well as the degradation of icosahedral carboranes are also described. This monograph will be a useful resource for organic and inorganic chemists.

Book Description :

This thesis focuses on the development of new methods of functionalizing carboranes using o-carboryne intermediates. Functional carboranes are now finding a broad range of applications, including organic synthesis, drug design, polymers, catalysis, metal−organic frameworks, electronic devices and more. However, the limited number of efficient synthetic methods for obtaining functional carborane materials has restricted their applications. The methodologies established in this thesis represent simple, yet powerful strategies to assemble previously inaccessible, useful complex molecules, which will also have a significant impact on future synthetic, cluster and materials chemistry. Moreover, it discusses the first method for the in situ generation of electrophilic boron radical using photocatalysis.

Book Description :

Icosahedral carboranes, a class of boron-rich clusters, are kinetically stabilized by the multicenter-2-electron delocalized bonding mode. The resulting 3-dimensional -aromaticity of the carboranes are analogous to the two-dimensional aromaticity of benzene, yet sterically these clusters are more comparable to adamantane. The composition of carboranes which contains two carbon vertices and ten boron vertices contributes to the unique anisotropic -aromaticity. This anisotropic -aromaticity, combined with steric hindrance, make carboranes an interesting molecular scaffolding for medicinal chemistry research. In this thesis, starting from B(9) brominated o-and m-carboranes, a Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling strategy has been developed to incorporate a series of N-containing nucleophiles with diverse electronic properties. This advancement further enriches the library of carborane structures. By using a Pd-catalyzed cyanation of 9-bromo-m-carboranes established by our group, we have successfully introduced the carborane moiety into histone deacetylase inhibitor as a new three-dimensional capping group. Initial cell study has shown carbonyl inhibitors have similar or decreased toxicity compared to their adamantyl analog.

Book Description :

The 3rd supplement continues the updating of the original 20 volumes on boron compounds published between 1974 and 1979. The first supplement consisting of 3 volumes covered all the literature uniformly up to the end of 1977, whereas the two volumes of the 2nd supplement have extended the literature coverage of boron compounds to 1980 and the four volumes of the 3rd supplement to 1984. The present volume continues the description of boron compounds with halogens, presenting those with chlorine, bromine and iodine. The compounds with chalcogens are completed here along with those of boron with S, Se, Te and Po. The final chapter on carboranes contains the carboranes themselves, together with metallacarboranes, and in the last section a description of carborane-containing polymers, mostly derived from the three isomeric dicarbadodecarboranes. Volume 4 of the 3rd supplement brings this supplement series to an end. It will be supplemented by a separately appearing index volume, which contains all the boron compounds dealt with in volumes 1 - 4 of this supplement series.

Book Description :

Progress in Boron Chemistry, Volume 2 presents the chemistry and applications of boron and its compounds. This book provides a critical treatment of six areas of boron chemistry, including polyhedral borane ions, carboranes, polymers, hydrogen, metal borides, and elemental boron. Organized into six chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the structures as well as the synthesis of polyhedral borane anions. This text then examines the various types of classes and series of the carboranes. Other chapters consider the relatively intramolecular rearrangements and intramolecular exchange reactions concerning the various closo-carboranes and nido-carboranes. This book discusses as well the formation and the historical significance of a higher boron hydride polymer. The final chapter deals with the structural utilization of boron filaments, which promises to be the first large-scale use for comparatively high purity elemental boron. This book is intended to be suitable for boron chemists, chemical engineers, scientists, and research workers.

Book Description :

Two sets of hypotheses are presented. The first accounts for the carbon locations among the various position isomers of the carboranes, while the second attempts to cross-correlate most, perhaps all, of the 11B nmr ambiguities thus far reported on the basis of tautomerism involving specific structural elements in selected nido-boranes and all of the arachno-boranes. When taken together the two sets of hypotheses allow us to predict the most probable carbon position isomers among undiscovered and structurally unresolved carboranes and, fulfilling the primary objective of this study, reassures us that major ambiguities should not be anticipated in the spectra of all carboranes which contain two or more carbons. In selected cases the hypotheses can be extended to non-boron containing compounds. Norbornyl cation, for example, has been suggested to have the structure of an arachno-carborane; it possesses the specific structural feature necessary to generate nmr ambiguities, and, indeed, it generates exactly the spectrum for such a tautomerizing system. The first supplement volume eomplements the 20 volumes on boron eompounds (Borverbin dungen) that have been published within the New Supplement Series (Erg.-Werk) of the eighth edition of the Gmelin Handbook by uniformly updating the literature eoverage to the end of 1977. However, the deseription in this supplement volume follows largely the Gmelin prineiple of the last position. The systems boron-hydrogen and boron-oxygen were presented in the first part, the systems boron-nitrogen and boron-halogens in the seeond part. This third and final part eontains the systems boron-ehaleogens and also earboranes as weil as a formula index for the three parts of the first supplement volume. Besides the earboranes many additional examples of earbon-eontaining or organie eompounds are ineluded in the presentation, partieularly in those eases where the earbon-free speeies are not known. As was the ease in the volumes of the New Supplement Series, a substantial part of this supplement volume is already presented in the English language. The IUPAC nomenelature is adhered to as mueh as possible, deviations are elearly indieated. Book Description :

This thesis describes research carried out on compounds containing icosahedral carborane moieties (ortho/meta/para-CB10H10C-), investigating their photophysical and electrochemical properties. The ortho carborane cage is shown to play an active role in the fluorescence and electrochemical reduction properties. Meta and para carborane groups, however, chiefly act as spectators. Chapter one gives an overview of carboranes in the literature, highlighting the syntheses, photophysical and electrochemical studies done previously on C-aryl-carboranes. Chapter two describes the syntheses of naphthyl carboranes. Ortho di-naphthyl carborane displays emission with a large Stokes shift, while the meta and para isomers emit with a small Stokes shift. Ortho monosubstituted naphthyl carborane, by contrast, displays two distinct fluorescent emission bands, with large and small Stokes shifts. TD-DFT calculations reveal that the two emission bands can be attributed to two different S1 excited states formed on excitation. The low energy band is due to a geometry in which the cage C-C length is elongated. The high energy band is due to a closed cage conformation in which the cage C-C bond length is smaller. In chapter three the syntheses and fluorescence emission of carboranyl triarylamines are investigated. Meta and para carboranyl triarylamines are found to emit in DCM solution, giving higher fluorescence quantum yields than the non-cluster triarylamines. Emission of ortho carboranyl triarylamine, with a large Stokes shift, is observed in 1:99 THF:H2O solution, due to aggregation induced emission. The S1 excited state geometry is calculated to have an extended cage C-C length. Chapter four investigates the syntheses and fluorescence of some bridged ortho carborane compounds of the type (1-R-1,2-C2B10H10)2X, where X=1,1'- (C6H4)2/C4SH2/C6H4 or C6F4. These compounds are found to give a broad range of emission maxima, from 355 to 763 nm in THF:H2O solutions. Chapter five looks at the electrochemistry of some simple carboranes, naphthyl carboranes, carboranyl triarylamines and bridged carboranes. Calculations of the cage C-C bond lengths are shown to be successful at predicting trends in the reduction potentials of simple carboranes. On reduction to a dianion, the cage C-C bond length is elongated as the carborane cage opens up to accommodate the additional electrons. The greater the cage C-C bond length in the ground state, the greater the ease with which the reduction occurs. Dinapthyl ortho carborane displays formation of a radical anion before further reduction to the dianion, as reported for di-phenyl ortho carborane. Bridged carboranes where X=C6H4/C6F4/C4SH2 display communication between carborane cages and suggest considerable bridge involvement.
