Book Description :

Pet Parasites is a comprehensive, yet concise guide to the parasitic problems your pet is at risk of in their everyday lives. The unique guide gives the pet owner the details they simply do not find anywhere else. It reveals that parasites are potentially more serious than most people think and any reader will be mightily glad they took a peek. It starts by introducing you to some common parasites and how your pet can catch them, including the eye-opening life cycles revealing just how easy parasites can spread. You will also become acquainted with the symptoms of parasite infestations so you can recognise when your pet is irritated or unwell and get them to the vets sooner. More knowledge means quicker recognition, quicker diagnosis and quicker, more successful treatment. Unlike so many other guides, Pet Parasites is honest about the real health risks parasites have for not just your pets, but yourself. Yes, the little, pesky pests lingering on or within your pet can be a threat to you and your family, with some able to transmit over to humans and cause disease. Parasites are nasty, but it doesn't even need to get to that point. You have at least a bit of power because you'll find out exactly how to prevent parasites from causing problems with your beloved animals. And even when parasites prevail, this guide will show exactly how they can be eradicated! You are most likely to only find tid-bits in general pet care books - Pet Parasites is one of the very few guides solely dedicated to the topic of parasites, with a perfect balance of detail with being snappy and to the point. A caring dog or cat lover wouldn't want to risk not having this guide in their collection.

Book Description :

Recognize and treat the parasites seen in veterinary practice! Diagnostic Parasitology for Veterinary Technicians, 5th Edition features clear and concise discussions of the most commonly encountered internal and external parasites. Chapters are organized by parasite group — including nematodes, cestodes, trematodes, protozoans, arthropods, and leeches — and include a detailed description of the group, with special emphasis on morphology, life cycle, and important parasites. Then in each chapter, material is conveniently organized by host species: dogs, cats, horses, ruminants, swine, birds, lab animals, fish, and reptiles. Written by noted educators Charles Hendrix and Ed Robinson, this full-color, spiral-bound book provides the knowledge that veterinary technicians need to collect samples, perform lab procedures, and communicate with clients and other members of the veterinary team. Clear, concise coverage simplifies information on the most commonly encountered internal and external parasites, preparing you for credentialing exams and the veterinary clinic. More than 470 full-color photos show exactly what ova, adult parasites, and parasitic diseases look like, so you can identify them more easily when viewing lab samples. Step-by-step guidelines in the Laboratory Procedures chapter describe how to gather samples and how to perform the laboratory techniques used in identifying parasites. Emphasis on the zoonotic potential of parasites helps you alert clients and other health care workers to the significance of zoonotic parasites and shows ways in which you can prevent transmission of a zoonotic parasite, condition, or syndrome from animals to humans. Logical chapter organization follows the sequence of parasitology classes, beginning with a basic overview of external parasites, internal parasites, and nematodes, followed by chapters that go into detail of the parasites by host species. An appendix lists the parasites of each species and shows their location in the text, making information easy to find. Heartworm section helps you recognize and treat heartworms with an in-depth discussion of the performance and interpretation of diagnostic tests for this major parasite. Summary tables show how to categorize parasites, and include such categories as body systems affected, taxonomic grouping, host species, and location in host. Table of parasites at the front of the book is arranged by host species and includes page numbers for cross-reference throughout the book. Vet Tech Threads design makes learning easier with chapter outlines, chapter objectives, key terms, and Technician Notes in every chapter. Chapter on terminology familiarizes you with the basic language and classification scheme of parasitology for more effective communication with clients and colleagues. Flash cards on the Evolve companion website help you learn and memorize key facts about the major parasites, including audio pronunciations. Workbook/textbook format provides immediate review tools through matching exercises and questions for thought and discussion at the end of each chapter.

Book Description :

I designed my book "Parasites and Worms in Humans," as a medical reference textbook for anyone with an education between high-school graduates, through and including medical students. It will be easily understood by the average lay person who has no medical background knowledge, yet contains enough referenced information for those readers who need deep medical details. This book is an educational teaching tool, with the same information I would present at a weekend educational seminar discussing parasites and worms. As a teaching tool, for educational purposes only, I also included the exact remedial medical protocols I use on all of my parasite and worm patients. I have six different remedial protocols I use with all of my patients, labeled A, B, C, D, E, and F. I select the protocol best suited for each patient, based on the type and severity of their parasitic infestation. Also give detailed instructions on how any lay person or medical student, can easily obtain, directly from the manufacturer(s), the exact herbal medicines I personally use in my practice when treating my parasite and worm patients. As a textbook, I also educate on the most common parasites and worms that can, and do, infest mankind from any part of this globe, including highly developed countries such as the USA. Even though there are several more types and variations of parasites and worms that can be taught in either one weekend seminar or in one book, I always choose from one of my six remedial protocols whenever I treat any of my patients, including parasites and worms not listed in my book. For educational reference, I use Remedial Protocol "C" most often with my parasite and worm patients, sometimes repetitively if necessary. This book is for educational purposes only and has not been evaluated by the FDA.

Book Description :

Toxocara is a parasitic helminth worm which continues to stimulate both public concern and scientific interest. Toxocara canis and T.cati, the most studied species, are gastrointestinal parasites of dogs and cats and their eggs can contaminate the environment, thus exposing humans and other mammals and birds to infection. Many questions remain unanswered about the host-parasite relationship, its epidemiology and public health significance. Veterinarians and clinicians are interested in its importance as a zoonosis. The parasite's capacity to cause ocular disease is of concern to ophthalmologists, while its propensity to stimulate allergic manifestations is of interest to allergologists, dermatologists and respiratory medicine specialists. Furthermore Toxocara provides a unique model system to explore questions in parasite biology. This book provides a comprehensive review of Toxocara and the disease it causes known as toxocariasis.

Book Description :

Pets harbor various parasites (e.g., worms, ticks, fleas, mites, viruses, fungi and bacteria), many of which can be directly or indirectly transferred to their owners. Consequently, human health is linked to the health of household pets. In order to understand how pets become infected, and how such infections are likely to spread to all members of the household, it is important to have some knowledge of the life cycles of the offending parasites. Managing the health of a pet is a time-consuming task, one that is essential not only for the animal, but also for its human family, both of which can suffer serious health problems as a consequence of inadequate pet care. This publication examines how pets, primarily dogs and cats, acquire certain parasitic infections and then transfer them to their owners. The information provided is intended to encourage pet owners to initiate regular veterinary intervention to effectively address pet wellness and to eliminate the problems caused by parasitic infections.

It is also widespread, causing human disease in the Americas, Asia, Europe and Africa. The environments in which this disease occurs range from desert to tropical jungle to urban habitats. Not surprisingly, the literature on this disease is written in a variety of languages including Portuguese, Arabic, English and French among others. This book provides a synopsis in English of much of the recent research on leishmaniasis, with a focus on the epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment of the disease as described by researchers around the world, but with a focus on the research from Brazil and the Middle East.

Book Description :

The purpose of this book is to provide a concise account of those parasites which affect man in developed countries. Other textbooks relate mainly to the tropics and subtropics where parasites by comparison are more common. It is widely believed that this difference in prevalence between tropical and temperate countries is due to differences in climatic conditions alone. Whilst it is true that certain vectors can only act as transmitters of disease under climatic conditions found in the tropics, there are many other instances where climate per se is not a decisive factor. More often parasitic disease is related to the poor standards of hygiene, sanitation and nutrition, which characterize many of these tropical and subtropical areas. The advent of more international travel has added a new dimension to the study of parasites, with the appearance of rare and exotic parasitic infections in the West. This book encompasses the entire field of parasites in developed countries with a brief reference to other parts of the world whenever appropriate for the sake of completeness. Each chapter provides basic information as well as recent advances and current thinking. Thus the book will serve as an excellent, comprehensive in troduction to those taking up a specialized interest in the subject, as well as those who may wish to obtain general information but are not actively working in the field. Although it is primarily written from a medical and veterinary stand point, it provides valuable material for other disciplines.

Book Description :

Although there are books available dealing with canine parasitology, there is at present no book detailing parasites that offers clinical information specific to felines. Cats differ significantly from dogs in their parasitic infections and infestations. Although dogs and cats do share a few parasites, the vast majority of the parasites of these pets are specific to either cats or dogs, not to both. This must-have reference offers an in-depth examination of feline parasites. Topics covered include parasite identification, history, geographic distribution, pathogeneisis, epidemiology, zoonosis, diagnosis, treatment, control, and prevention. Because of the immense worldwide popularity of cats and due to the amount of travel undertaken by cats and their owners, the authors have produced a book that is international in scope. Consequently, this exhaustive reference has strong appeal to practitioners and veterinary parasitologists in North America and around the world.

Book Description :

The author's intention to write "Science and Medicine in Imperial Russia" was to acquaint the American medical and scientific professionals, and, hopefully, the general public, with the accomplishments of Russian scientists and physicians in the areas of their professions. The authors has limited his story to medicine, chemistry, and biology, the areas of his extended experience. American public's thinking, due to a number of reasons, is that Imperial Russia was a "swamp" (to use President Trump's expression), in which nothing of medical or scientific importance has ever been discovered or developed. This author, of course, thinks otherwise, and presents in this volume an ample amount of evidence to show that in the fields listed above, the accomplishments of the Russians were surprisingly numerous. As an example, one can cite the discoveries of Russian organic chemists (especially at the Kazan University), which, arguably, were exceeded only by the Germans.
