Book Description :

This book presents the fundamentals of modern tensor calculus for students in engineering and applied physics, emphasizing those aspects that are crucial for applying tensor calculus safely in Euclidian space and for grasping the very essence of the smooth manifold concept. After introducing the subject, it provides a brief exposition on point set topology to familiarize readers with the subject, especially with those topics required in later chapters. It then describes the finite dimensional real vector space and its dual, focusing on the usefulness of the latter for encoding duality concepts in physics. Moreover, it introduces tensors as objects that encode linear mappings and discusses affine and Euclidean spaces. Tensor analysis is explored first in Euclidean space, starting from a generalization of the concept of differentiability and proceeding towards concepts such as directional derivative, covariant derivative and integration based on differential forms. The final chapter addresses the role of smooth manifolds in modeling spaces other than Euclidean space, particularly the concepts of smooth atlas and tangent space, which are crucial to understanding the topic. Two of the most important concepts, namely the tangent bundle and the Lie derivative, are subsequently worked out.

Book Description :

Advanced Mathematics for Engineering Students: The Essential Toolbox provides a concise treatment for applied mathematics. Derived from two semester advanced mathematics courses at the author’s university, the book delivers the mathematical foundation needed in an engineering program of study. Other treatments typically provide a thorough but somewhat complicated presentation where students do not appreciate the application. This book focuses on the development of tools to solve most types of mathematical problems that arise in engineering – a “toolbox” for the engineer. It provides an important foundation but goes one step further and demonstrates the practical use of new technology for applied analysis with commercial software packages (e.g., algebraic, numerical and statistical). Delivers a focused and concise treatment on the underlying theory and direct application of mathematical methods so that the reader has a collection of important mathematical tools that are easily understood and ready for application as a practicing engineer The book material has been derived from class-tested courses presented over many years in applied mathematics for engineering students (all problem sets and exam questions given for the course(s) are included along with a solution manual) Provides fundamental theory for applied mathematics while also introducing the application of commercial software packages as modern tools for engineering application, including: EXCEL (statistical analysis); MAPLE (symbolic and numeric computing environment); and COMSOL (finite element solver for ordinary and partial differential equations)

Book Description :

Algebraic, differential, and integral equations are used in the applied sciences, en gineering, economics, and the social sciences to characterize the current state of a physical, economic, or social system and forecast its evolution in time. Generally, the coefficients of and/or the input to these equations are not precisely known be cause of insufficient information, limited understanding of some underlying phe nomena, and inherent randonmess. For example, the orientation of the atomic lattice in the grains of a polycrystal varies randomly from grain to grain, the spa tial distribution of a phase of a composite material is not known precisely for a particular specimen, bone properties needed to develop reliable artificial joints vary significantly with individual and age, forces acting on a plane from takeoff to landing depend in a complex manner on the environmental conditions and flight pattern, and stock prices and their evolution in time depend on a large number of factors that cannot be described by deterministic models. Problems that can be defined by algebraic, differential, and integral equations with random coefficients and/or input are referred to as stochastic problems. The main objective of this book is the solution of stochastic problems, that is, the determination of the probability law, moments, and/or other probabilistic properties of the state of a physical, economic, or social system. It is assumed that the operators and inputs defining a stochastic problem are specified.

Book Description :

An authorised reissue of the long out of print classic textbook, Advanced Calculus by the late Dr Lynn Loomis and Dr Shlomo Sternberg both of Harvard University has been a revered but hard to find textbook for the advanced calculus course for decades. This book is based on an honors course in advanced calculus that the authors gave in the 1960's. The foundational material, presented in the unstarred sections of Chapters 1 through 11, was normally covered, but different applications of this basic material were stressed from year to year, and the book therefore contains more material than was covered in any one year. It can accordingly be used (with omissions) as a text for a year's course in advanced calculus, or as a text for a three-semester introduction to analysis. The prerequisites are a good grounding in the calculus of one variable from a mathematically rigorous point of view, together with some acquaintance with linear algebra. The reader should be familiar with limit and continuity type arguments and have a certain amount of mathematical sophistication. As possible introductory texts, we mention Differential and Integral Calculus by R Courant, Calculus by T Apostol, Calculus by M Spivak, and Pure Mathematics by G Hardy. The reader should also have some experience with partial derivatives. In overall plan the book divides roughly into a first half which develops the calculus (principally the differential calculus) in the setting of normed vector spaces, and a second half which deals with the calculus of differentiable manifolds.

Generalized Calculus with Applications to Matter and Forces

Book Description :

Combining mathematical theory, physical principles, and engineering problems, Generalized Calculus with Applications to Matter and Forces examines generalized functions, including the Heaviside unit jump and the Dirac unit impulse and its derivatives of all orders, in one and several dimensions. The text introduces the two main approaches to generalized functions: (1) as a nonuniform limit of a family of ordinary functions, and (2) as a functional over a set of test functions from which properties are inherited. The second approach is developed more extensively to encompass multidimensional generalized functions whose arguments are ordinary functions of several variables. As part of a series of books for engineers and scientists exploring advanced mathematics, Generalized Calculus with Applications to Matter and Forces presents generalized functions from an applied point of view, tackling problem classes such as: Gauss and Stokes’ theorems in the differential geometry, tensor calculus, and theory of potential fields Self-adjoint and non-self-adjoint problems for linear differential equations and nonlinear problems with large deformations Multipolar expansions and Green’s functions for elastic strings and bars, potential and rotational flow, electro- and magnetostatics, and more This third volume in the series Mathematics and Physics for Science and Technology is designed to complete the theory of functions and its application to potential fields, relating generalized functions to broader follow-on topics like differential equations. Featuring step-by-step examples with interpretations of results and discussions of assumptions and their consequences, Generalized Calculus with Applications to Matter and Forces enables readers to construct mathematical–physical models suited to new observations or novel engineering devices.
