Book Description :

This book delineates the state of the art of the diagnosis and treatment of J wave syndromes, as well as where future research needs to be directed. It covers basic science, translational and clinical aspects of these syndromes. The authors are leading experts in their respective fields, who have contributed prominently to the literature concerning these topics. J wave syndromes are one of the hottest topics in cardiology today. Cardiac arrhythmias associated with Brugada syndrome (BrS) or an early repolarization (ER) pattern in the inferior or infero-lateral ECG leads are thought to be mechanistically linked to accentuation of transient outward current (Ito)-mediated J waves. Although BrS and ER syndrome (ERS) differ with respect to magnitude and lead location of abnormal J waves, they are thought to represent a continuous spectrum of phenotypic expression termed J wave syndromes. ERS is divided into three subtypes with the most severe, Type 3, displaying an ER pattern globally in the inferior, lateral and right precordial leads. BrS has been linked to mutations in 19 different genes, whereas ERS has been associated with mutations in 7 different genes. There is a great deal of confusion as to how to properly diagnose and treat the J wave syndromes as well as confusion about the underlying mechanisms. The demonstration of successful epicardial ablation of BrS has provided new therapeutic options for the management of this syndrome for which treatment alternatives are currently very limited, particularly in the case of electrical storms caused by otherwise uncontrollable recurrent VT/VF. An early repolarization pattern is observed in 2-5% of the US population. While it is clear that the vast majority of individuals exhibiting an ER pattern are not at risk for sudden cardiac death, the challenge moving forward is to identify those individuals who truly are at risk and to design safe and effective treatments.

Book Description :

A fresh assessment of ischemic electrocardiography, its prognostic correlations, and the concepts and principles that underlie its use The electrocardiogram (ECG) is integral to the accurate diagnosis and optimal management of patients with ischemic heart disease. Picking up a wide range of indicators, it provides valuable prognostic data to cardiologists and emergency medicine specialists for whom ECG readings are a trusted and everyday resource. Electrocardiography in Ischemic Heart Disease is designed to help enhance such clinicians' understanding of ECG recordings and their relationship to anatomical patterns of myocardial ischemia, thereby facilitating the continued improvement of patient care. For this new edition, the book's globally recognized team of authors has revised and expanded the original text to bring it up to date with the cardiology of today. Practical explanations of electrophysiological mechanisms, ischemic insults, and arterial occlusions are placed in the context of the ECG's day-to-day use, while full-color images illustrate core concepts in a vivid and instructive manner. This essential guide: Demonstrates correlations between ECG recordings and anatomical patterns of myocardial ischemia Covers STEMI, special forms of NSTEMI, and Q waves Describes electrocardiographic patterns of ischemia, injury, and infarction Includes full-color images Explores advanced techniques such as contrast-enhanced cardiac magnetic resonance Electrocardiography in Ischemic Heart Disease is an indispensable resource for both trainee and practicing cardiologists, emergency medicine physicians, and any clinicians involved in the diagnosis and management of ischemic heart disease.

Book Description :

Sudden Cardiac Death in young is significantly contributed by inheritable cardiac arrhythmia syndromes .The most prevalent and well-studied of them are Brugada Syndrome & QT-pathies .Brugada syndrome is characterized by coved ST-segment elevation in the right precordial electrocardiographic leads and an aborted sudden cardiac death due to ventricular fibrillation in the absence of structural heart disease. There is very scarce data and books written on Brugada syndrome in our country. Many patients with Brugada Syndrome are misdiagnosed even when they present with warning symptoms and signs or after resuscitated cardiac arrest. The fortunate patients who survive the first episode of SCD are also not evaluated and investigated to recognise if these conditions are present. This book is a humble effort to give lucid and comprehensive account of Brugada Syndrome which should enable clinicians to give better understanding of this condition and hence better care to the patients.

Book Description :

This book provides an essential overview combining both clinical and fundamental research advances in myotonic dystrophy. The pathomechanism of myotonic dystrophy has long been unclear, but in the past decade, our understanding has shifted to a novel disease mechanism concept: “RNA disease”. Parallel to these advances in elucidating the pathophysiology, translational research is also progressing rapidly. The current challenge lies in assessing the effectiveness of treatment, and as such, there is a growing interest in observational studies of the disease’s various clinical symptoms. The book introduces readers to the molecular mechanisms within each organ and the resultant clinical features, which are presented together. In particular, it focuses on the central nervous system, since the pathology of the brain (central nervous system manifestation) has rarely been addressed systematically and will pose a persistent challenge, even if therapies have greatly advanced in the future. In addition, the book addresses the latest developments, such as research using patient-derived iPS cells and therapeutic research. Myotonic Dystrophy provides essential information for neurologists and researchers with an interest in muscle disease, including muscular dystrophy. Furthermore, since the disease involves various complications of the brain, heart, metabolism, etc., the book will be of great value to clinicians and researchers in the cardiovascular sciences, endocrinology, diabetes, dementia, and neuropsychology, as well as genetic specialists.

This textbook provides a comprehensive, yet practically orientated overview of classic and novel sports cardiology topics, based on current evidence, guidelines, recommendations and expert experience. Numerous publications have provided guidance to these issues, but it has become increasingly difficult for both students and doctors to obtain a thorough, but practicable overview for optimal clinical care of athletes and patients. This book is intended as an educational work, filling the large gaps that are still present in the current educational guidelines for medical students and cardiology trainees. Textbook of Sports and Exercise Cardiology differs from other sports cardiology books by focusing on clear, practical recommendations based on the latest evidence, primarily targeting those who seek professional background information and education that can easily be transferred into everyday care.

Book Description :

This book elucidates a number of new concepts on P-wave evaluation and QRS depolarization properties, and reports on several repolarization findings never covered in previous ECG books. The content is primarily based on case reports, some of which are compared in order to reveal their ostensibly small but significant differences. The book addresses a significant and lingering gap in ECG interpretation, which is the actual cause of many poor decisions in the diagnostic and therapeutic contexts. Further, the book has an interdisciplinary appeal, and will be of equal interest to professionals and scholars with an interest in cardiology and ECG interpretation.
