Book Description :

Punctuated with both sharp and dry wit, Bart King presents a wealth of fascinating trivia. Brilliant people are those who walk farther, think deeper, and talk louder than the rest of us. They do what it takes to get the job done, and then some. The masters of brilliance include presidential candidate George Wallace, who released chickens into a crowd in order to spur on a debate; the first female journalist, Anne Newport Royall, who forced an interview with John Quincy Adams after catching him skinny dipping; and Benjamin Franklin, who of course coined the phrase "A penny saved is a penny earned," but also offered the lesser known "A man who lives on hope, dies farting."

Book Description :

This book is a critically important contribution to the work underway to transform schooling for students who have historically been denied access to a quality education, specifically African American children. The first section of the book provides some historical perspective critical to understanding the current state of education in the U.S., specifically for the education of African American children. The following sections include chapters on policy, learning, ethnomathematics, student identity, and teacher preparation as it relates to the mathematical education of Black children. Through offering “counternarratives” about mathematically successful Black youth, advocating for a curriculum that is grounded in African American culture and ways of thinking, providing shining examples of the brilliance of Blacks students, and promoting high expectations for all rather than situating students as the problem, the authors of this book provide powerful insights related to the teaching and learning of mathematics for African American students. As is made evident in this book, effective teaching involves much more than just engaging students in inquirybased pedagogy (Kitchen, 2003). The chapters offered in this book demonstrate how mathematics instruction for African American students needs to take into account historical marginalization and presentday policies that do harm to Black students (Kunjufu, 2005). Empowering mathematics instruction for African American students needs to take into consideration and promote students’ cultural, spiritual, and historical identities. Furthermore, mathematics instruction for African American students should create opportunities for students to express themselves and the needs of their communities as a means to promote social justice both within their classrooms and communities.

In the past few years I noticed the positive successful Muslim voices have been missing from the media. I didn't like turning on the television or reading news on social media convincing me that all Muslims are bad, all Muslims were terrible, and all Muslims want to hurt other people. This was NOT true at all. The Muslims around me were amazing people. The Muslims around me are making a difference in the world. The Muslims around me give charity to the orphans and help the weak and the vulnerable. When I started getting into digital marketing and coaching in the online space, I was introduced to Muslims who were extraordinary in what they were accomplishing online and off-line.These people touched and inspired me in more ways than I can possibly mention. So I took the initiative and interviewed each one of them to showcase their achievements, their vulnerabilities, and their secrets to success.I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did putting it together.I acknowledge each and every one of the people in this book for their time, their tenacity and their leadership.

Book Description :

After a shattering betrayal, a Frenchwoman finds a new role during the birth of the film industry, in a “truly interesting” historical novel (Booklist). When Lisette Decourt discovers her fiancé in the arms of her newly widowed stepmother, she flees her Paris home in shock and sorrow. Her wanderings bring her in contact with Daniel Shaw—a traveling “lanternist” who tells stories through a strange new art known as slide projection. Learning more about moving pictures, Lisette finds her passion for film growing—along with her passion for the Englishman Daniel. But their love will be tested as fate threatens to pull them away from each other, and as Lisette follows her path to becoming one of the first movie stars of the twentieth century. “The birth of the film industry is just as much a character in Laker's tale as Lisette, who overcomes personal tragedies to triumph in a truly interesting and wonderfully informative story.” —Booklist

Book Description :

This book was conceived in a vision that ensued quite vividly during the Integral Education Seminar in 2007. Igniting Brilliance: Integral Education for the 21st Century is an anthology comprising chapters by educators, ranging from elementary teachers to university professors, who exemplify the integral approach. The emerging field of integral education is a holistic, multidimensional approach with a basis in Ken Wilber's all-quadrant, all-level framework. This book offers a snapshot of the field through a series of light, nonacademic memoirs. It is designed to inspire teachers to personalize the lessons and methods for adopting an integral approach.

Book Description :

In an age of skepticism and disenchantment, people long for something that satisfies our mind’s search for truth and our heart’s desire for beauty and meaning. Stand Firm: Apologetics and the Brilliance of the Gospel argues that the gospel satisfies both of these needs. It is true and rational, but it is also inherently attractive and provides meaning and purpose. In short, the gospel is brilliant. It is brilliant, in one sense, because of the broad variety of evidences for its truth. But it is also brilliant given its beauty, goodness and the meaningful life it offers. The book provides up to date responses to questions about the existence of God, the reliability of the Bible, Jesus and the resurrection, and the problem of evil. It also treats unique topics such as understanding truth, knowledge and faith, the claims of alternate faiths, religious disagreement, etc. Each chapter attempts to connect these considerations with the gospel so that we may stand firm in our faith.

Book Description :

This much-needed book will help schools and, by extension, society to better understand and identify the promise, potential, and possibilities of Black boys. Drawing from their wealth of experience in early childhood education, the authors present an asset- and strengths-based view of educating Black boys. This positive approach enables practitioners and school leaders to recognize, understand, and cultivate the diversity of social skills of Black boys in the early grades (pre-K–3rd grade). Each chapter begins with a vignette to illustrate what is lost when Black boys are prevented from participating freely in boyhood, having to instead attend to adult and peer interactions and attitudes that view them as “bad boys” and “troublemakers.” This accessible book provides teachers with classroom strategies to help young Black boys achieve their highest potential, along with other resources for supporting their social-emotional development, such as a reading list of authentic multicultural children’s books with Black boys as protagonists. “The Brilliance of Black Boys claims new ground to advance knowledge and practice that can change the narrative about Black boys and their early schooling.” —From the Foreword by James Earl Davis, Temple University “Wright’s uncommon insight into the world of Black boys unveils a new narrative and gives educators a formula for turning opportunity into advantage.” —Carol Brunson Day, past president, NAEYC “The Brilliance of Black Boys provides counter-stories, theories, paradigms, and resources to skillfully illustrate the strengths of Black boys. Readers will not be disappointed.” —Donna Y. Ford, Vanderbilt University
