Book Description :

From the author of Losing Earth, a beautifully told exploration of our post-natural world that points the way to a new mode of ecological writing. We live at a time in which scientists race to reanimate extinct beasts, our most essential ecosystems require monumental engineering projects to survive, chicken breasts grow in test tubes, and multinational corporations conspire to poison the blood of every living creature. No rock, leaf, or cubic foot of air on Earth has escaped humanity's clumsy signature. The old distinctions—between natural and artificial, dystopia and utopia, science fiction and science fact—have blurred, losing all meaning. We inhabit an uncanny landscape of our own creation. In Second Nature, ordinary people make desperate efforts to preserve their humanity in a world that seems increasingly alien. Their stories—obsessive, intimate, and deeply reported—point the way to a new kind of environmental literature, in which dramatic narrative helps us to understand our place in a reality that resembles nothing human beings have known. From Odds Against Tomorrow to Losing Earth to the film Dark Waters (adapted from the first chapter of this book), Nathaniel Rich’s stories have come to define the way we think of contemporary ecological narrative. In Second Nature, he asks what it means to live in an era of terrible responsibility. The question is no longer, How do we return to the world that we’ve lost?It is, What world do we want to create in its place?

Book Description :

A true tale of high adventure in the South Seas. The tiny island of Run is an insignificant speck in the Indonesian archipelago. Just two miles long and half a mile wide, it is remote, tranquil, and, these days, largely ignored. Yet 370 years ago, Run's harvest of nutmeg (a pound of which yielded a 3,200 percent profit by the time it arrived in England) turned it into the most lucrative of the Spice Islands, precipitating a battle between the all-powerful Dutch East India Company and the British Crown. The outcome of the fighting was one of the most spectacular deals in history: Britain ceded Run to Holland but in return was given Manhattan. This led not only to the birth of New York but also to the beginning of the British Empire. Such a deal was due to the persistence of one man. Nathaniel Courthope and his small band of adventurers were sent to Run in October 1616, and for four years held off the massive Dutch navy. Nathaniel's Nutmeg centers on the remarkable showdown between Courthope and the Dutch Governor General Jan Coen, and the brutal fate of the mariners racing to Run-and the other corners of the globe-to reap the huge profits of the spice trade. Written with the flair of a historical sea novel but based on rigorous research, Giles Milton's Nathaniel's Nutmeg is a brilliant adventure story by a writer who has been hailed as the "new Bruce Chatwin" (Mail on Sunday).

SHORTLISTED FOR THE 2015 FINANCIAL TIMES AND MCKINSEY BUSINESS BOOK OF THE YEAR A New York Times technology and business reporter charts the dramatic rise of Bitcoin and the fascinating personalities who are striving to create a new global money for the Internet age. Digital Gold is New York Times reporter Nathaniel Popper’s brilliant and engrossing history of Bitcoin, the landmark digital money and financial technology that has spawned a global social movement. The notion of a new currency, maintained by the computers of users around the world, has been the butt of many jokes, but that has not stopped it from growing into a technology worth billions of dollars, supported by the hordes of followers who have come to view it as the most important new idea since the creation of the Internet. Believers from Beijing to Buenos Aires see the potential for a financial system free from banks and governments. More than just a tech industry fad, Bitcoin has threatened to decentralize some of society’s most basic institutions. An unusual tale of group invention, Digital Gold charts the rise of the Bitcoin technology through the eyes of the movement’s colorful central characters, including an Argentinian millionaire, a Chinese entrepreneur, Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, and Bitcoin’s elusive creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. Already, Bitcoin has led to untold riches for some, and prison terms for others.

Book Description :

Excerpt from Passages From the English Note-Books of Nathaniel Hawthorne, Vol. 2 He expressed great joy at the recognition, and immediately introduced me to Mr. Hall. The dining-room was pretty large and lofty, and there were sixteen guests at table, most of them authors, or people connected with the press; so that the party represented a great deal of the working intellect of London at this present day and moment, - the men whose plays, whose songs, whose articles, are just now in vogue. Mr. Tom Taylor was one of the very few whose writings I had known anything about. He is a tall, slender, dark young man, not English-looking, and wearing coloured spectacles, so that I should readily have taken him for an American literary man. I did not have much opportunity of talking with him, nor with anybody else, except Dr. -, who seemed a shrewd, sensible man, with a certain slight acerbity of thought. Mr. Herbert Ingram, recently elected member of Parliament, was likewise present, and sat on B h's left. It was a very good dinner, with an abundance of wine, which B h sent round faster than was for the next day's comfort of his guests. It is singular that I should thus far have quite forgotten, whose books I know better than those of any other person there. Book Description :

Excerpt from Passages From the American Note-Books of Nathaniel Hawthorne After the death of Hawthorne, the desire for a biography was so strongly expressed, both among his friends and by the public at large, that his widow was prompted to supply in part the information of which there was obviously much need. As she has explained in her Preface to the "English Note-Books," Hawthorne's own wish was that no one should attempt to write his life. Lapsing time and the perspective imparted by the world's settled estimate of his genius, have shown that no final restriction ought to be imposed on the natural instinct and right of students and sincere admirers to seek a more personal knowledge of the author than his imaginative writings could yield. His preference, respecting the publication of a biography, was not, indeed, an absolute injunction; but it is not strange that Mrs. Hawthorne should have chosen to conform to it. In default, then, of the life which she was unwilling to countenance or undertake, she resolved to offer these extracts from his memorandum-books or diaries, supplemented by portions of his letters. They were designed to present some suggestion of his mode of life and mental habit, and to counteract a false impression of his personality which the sombre tone of his fictions had spread abroad. Book Description :

Excerpt from Passages From the French and Italian Note-Books of Nathaniel Hawthorne, Vol. 1 It was not a pleasant morning; but we started immediately after breakfast for Abbotsford, which is but about three miles distant. The country between Melrose and that place is not in the least beautiful, nor very noteworthy, one or two Old irregular villages; one tower that looks principallydomestic, yet partly war like, and seems to be of some antiquity; and an undulation, or rounded hilly surface of the landa scape, sometimes affording wide vistas between the slopes. These hills, which, I suppose, are some of them on the Abbotsford estate, are partly covered with woods, but of Scotch fir, or some tree of that species, which creates no sof tened undulation, but overspreads the hill like a tightly fitting wig. It is a cold, dreary, disheart cuing neighborhood, that of Abbotsford, at least, it has appeared so to me at both of my visits, one of which was on a bleak and windy May morning, and this one on a chill, showery morning of midsummer. Our hands offer revealing insights into who we are, where we're going, and who we take with us on our life journey. What are a person's strengths and weaknesses? How might he or she behave in a relationship? What type of career could bring someone the greatest amount of pleasure and fulfillment? Through hand analysis, we can not only learn more about ourselves and others, but we can also work through challenges and obstacles with optimism and purpose. The culmination of nearly fifty years of research and experience, Palmistry the Universal Guide covers all aspects of hand analysis in a comprehensive and easy-to-understand manner. Author Nathaniel Altman begins with a brief introduction to the art and science of hand analysis and then focuses on the meaning of different hand and finger shapes, palm mounts, lines and skin ridge patterns. Next, Altman focuses on the psychological aspects of palm reading, such as character analysis, using a variety of lines and other features of the palm. He then moves on to romance, focusing on sexual personality, compatibility and how to achieve happy and long-lasting relationships. Palmistry can also be a helpful diagnostic aid. The book also covers careers and self-fulfillment, as well as how palmistry can help us find a spiritual path that is right for us. The book ends with advice on how to read hands and take handprints. Both thoroughly fascinating and eminently practical, Palmistry: The Universal Guide makes an age-old practice relevant for us today.

Psychic Development Simplified is a complete guidebook to psychic development. With it, you can learn psychic abilities for real. Start with meditation, affirmations and emotional healing; learn about Chi and psychic energies; practice psychic self-defense, and learn energy manipulation; master psychic readings, psychometry, psychic healing, telekinesis, remote viewing and much more! Book's author, Nathaniel, a professional psychic, have put together knowledge from different parts of the world, and simplified it, so anyone can unleash his or hers psychic potential! Below are reviews of readers: "Psychic Development Simplified is an amazing source of information. I learned a few tips and tricks even I hadn't known! Nathan has done a fantastic job compiling information and making it understandable for everyone! I highly recommend it to others!" - J.V. Krakowski, psychic teacher. "Interested a book on psychic development that's different from all of the rest? Try Nathan's new e-book, Psychic Development Simplified and you won't be disappointed. (...) As a professional intuitive, I found myself nodding my head along with him in the "How To" do a psychic reading section. (...) I found myself puzzling over them somewhat not only as I was learning some new things, but also as I recognized that there were a number of things I do automatically in a reading that I didn't really learn anywhere that Nathan puts a name to and teaches you how to do - invaluable. (...) Nathan uses easy to understand "everyday" analogies to explain complex topics. He is straightforward and calls it like he sees it. You can trust his judgement when he gives you advice on how to think about the process and not to overwhelm or overload yourself, but instead to take it easy and at your own pace. Some of the advice he gives in snippets thrown out here and there are simply priceless and will resonate with everyone, no matter what your intuitive style or belief system. (...) It is dense, extensively informative, and something that I would liken to a Psychic Encyclopedia. My take on this is that it could in itself be considered a fairly comprehensive course. The perspective is unique, and just different enough to make even a seasoned psychic or intuitive reconsider their position on some things." - Julie Barrett, professional psychic intuitive. "(...) I had the good fortune of being able to read "Psychic Development Simplified" and am so glad I did. I was a little daunted at first by the number of pages, but once I settled in to read, it was hard to put it down. It is exactly as the title states - simplified. One of the best pieces of information I learned was that not everyone has the same gifts, but you have the ability to learn others. Before I started reading, I had visions in my head about turban wearing shrunken ladies with long fingernails and a crystal ball; I was extremely happy to find out this is not a realistic thought and true psychics are every day people with every day lives. Another great point about this book are the theories that are discussed in full detail before each practical activity. I like a little knowledge and/or history before I dive into something and that is exactly what Nathan provided. The practical exercises were easy to understand and attempt throughout the entire book. I'm so thankful for my new knowledge that I can't wait to re-read and continue practicing. I would highly recommend this for all levels of learning and practicing psychics." - Jennifer, a psychic in training. Get your copy today, and unleash your psychic potential!
