Therefore, many countries are developing national energy strategies or policies that target the reduction of the high dependency on energy produced from fossil fuel and moving towards renewable energy that is produced from biomass which is bioenergy. This study explores the challenges of how a sustainable forest fuel biomass supply chain can be established in South Africa, to supply the required volumes of forest fuel biomass to multifuel biomass boiler organisations to produce bioenergy. This research study used a qualitative, exploratory and inductive research methods to gain insights into how this forest fuel biomass supply chain can be established. The data was collected through 12 in-depth, semi-structured interviews with farmers, biomass boiler operational stuff and forestry management personnel. The interviews were transcribed, coded and analysed to answer the research questions. The study confirmed that transparency and openness through the forest fuel biomass supply chain was imperative as it has been identified through the review of the literature, and risk management needed to be incorporated when establishing the supply chain. A framework is presented that would help with the establishment of the forest fuel biomass supply chain.

In the growing concerns towards global environmental qualities and sustainable feedstocks supplies, scientific and technological efforts were intensified to utilize alternative renewable resources. In this regard, biomass appeared to be one of the potential feedstocks because it is generally carbon neutral and essentially renewable. Furthermore, biomass is virtually found in every part of the world in abundance and could provide socio-economic benefits. However, if it is not managed properly, biomass will be less competitive due to several issues that are associated with its supply chain. Typical biomass supply chain has a series of activities such as growing, harvesting, transporting, aggregating, and conversion which systematic and efficient flows of materials from the fields to the users are highly important. Biomass has competing uses, different kinds and origins which are potentially exploitable, poor geographic distributions for retrieving and transporting, and variations in physical and chemical properties. It is difficult to make informed decision for any biomass utilization project without having an optimal supply chain. This research intended to solve those issues by modeling and optimizing biomass supply chains for manufacturing energy, chemicals, and materials based on their respective processing routes. The aim was not only to focus on energy production from biomass but also to include chemicals and materials because of several factors such as an emerging cost competitive energy resource such as shale gas, highly volatile energy prices, and customer's preparedness and acceptances. Furthermore, it also could leverage biomass plantations on the producers' sides. The biomass supply chain model has considered annual profitability of producing products as the performance indicator. It was derived from revenues of selling the products subtracted all the associated costs such as biomass cost, transportation cost, production cost, and emission treatment costs from transportation and production activities. It summed up simultaneously all the profitable processing options that have existed in the superstructure to yield the optimal value, while a single ownership was assumed for the whole supply chain's facilities. Three optimization models have been developed and implemented in GAMS (General Algebraic Modeling System).

In this paper, a bi-criterion, multi-period, stochastic mixed-integer linear programming model is proposed to address the optimal design and planning of hydrocarbon biorefinery supply chains under supply and demand uncertainties. The model accounts for diverse conversion technologies, feedstock seasonality and fluctuation, geographical diversity, biomass degradation, demand variation, government incentives and risk management. The objective is simultaneous minimization of the expected annualized cost and the financial risk which is measured by conditional value-at-risk and downside risk. The model determines the optimal network design, technology selection, capital investment, production planning, and logistics management decisions. Multi-cut L-shaped decomposition approach is implemented to circumvent the computational burden of solving large scale problems. The proposed modeling framework and algorithm are illustrated through two case studies of hydrocarbon biorefinery supply chain for the State of Illinois.

Energy access remains a significant challenge in nations lacking access to resources and strong infrastructure systems, creating barriers to economic development and to increased standards of living. Small scale biomass gasification energy (BGE) systems have been developed to meet energy needs in rural areas, creating synergies between agricultural and agro-forestry systems through utilization of biomass feedstock for energy generation. The sustainability of such systems requires sophisticated planning and coordination of the biomass supply chain. The goal of this thesis is to investigate and improve structural and process related characteristics of sustainability assessments for small scale bio-energy systems, specifically focusing on establishment and management of biomass supply chains through the development and dissemination of a generic sustainability assessment framework for biomass supply chains of small-scale BGE systems in rural East Africa. Building on a preliminary sustainability assessment framework (Christensen, 2013; Joerg, 2013) this research develops an assessment tool designed to capture sustainability requirements of the biomass supply chain in the ecological, social, and economic spheres through testing on three case studies in rural Uganda. Application and analysis of a preliminary framework on pilot projects in a rural east African context using Multi Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) methodologies contributes to development of strategies for energy system analysis and building stakeholder capacity to incorporate social, economic, and environmental considerations. The assessment process is outlined, including scoring, data collection, contextual considerations. Model application is discussed, including the impact of weighting on decision outcomes, uncertainty management, sensitivity analysis, and identification of tradeoffs among criteria. Finally, discussion of tool usefulness verses usability contributes to bridging academic research with practitioner priorities.
