Highlights: New gasifier-torrefier was tested experimentally for wood pellet torrefaction. Syngas temperature of 300–400 °C after the gasifier was sufficient for torrefaction process. The torrefier was tested at different syngas flows, bed heights and residence times. 40% and 5% increase in torrefied biomass and syngas LHV respectively were achieved. Abstract: Torrefaction is known as mild pyrolysis process occurring at temperature range of 200–300 °C. Torrefied biomass can be co-fired directly with coal in boilers without any fuel pre-treatment, thus, increasing its economic value over raw biomass significantly. An experimental rig was developed to characterize the torrefaction process of wood pellets in a new gasifier-torrefier. Temperature of the syngas exiting the gasifier is about 300–400 °C which is sufficient for biomass torrefaction. Biomass torrefaction process is fully characterized based on biomass bed height and temperature, residence time and heating value of the torrefied product. Temperature profiles inside the torrefaction reactor were recorded for different air flow rates of 9, 12, 15 and 18 m 3 /h. The process has achieved about 10–40% and 5% enhancement in heating value of torrefied biomass and syngas respectively.

This chapter provides insights about the stages of reaction during pyrolysis and the outcome of reaction conditions on the products. Technical development and adjustment of process condition can offer a suitable environmentally benign scheme to increase the energy density of the lignocellulosic residues.

The thermal chemical conversion process is used to change the biomass to the renewable energy source. The process is distinguished by different temperature. The main goal of this study was experimentally about the ability of the direct fired furnace in control the temperature of furnace and reactor. This studied by do the modification on the system to regulate and control the fuel input in order to know the required energy for the direct fired system. The minimum setting fuel flow rate is 18 L/min that produce 28.2KW energy. By limitation of flow meter, the maximum fuel flow rate was 22L/min that produced 34.47 KW of energy. But the setting of opening air damper is gave the effect the furnace and reactor temperature. The fuel flow rate constant at 22L/min but the opening air damper setting is changed to get the required temperature for desired process. 3.6 of opening air damper setting are used for torrefaction process and 0.6 is for pyrolysis process. For gasification process could not achieve because to many heat loss occur in this system. Based on the energy produced, the theoretical reactor temperature is calculated based on heat transfer equation for hollow cylinder. The comparison between theoretical and actual reactor temperature showed there is 13% of heat loss occurred.
