Book Description :

Nearly 5.7 million adult Americans are affected by bipolar disorder according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Bipolar disorder (BD) is a recurrent chronic disorder characterized by fluctuations in mood. Those suffering from bipolar disorder are at crossroads, suffering a major personal, social and economic burden. Currently, there lacks of definitive diagnostic tools for psychiatric disorders. Psychiatry continues to rely on a non-biologically based, diagnostic classification. Identification of biologically relevant markers could improve the quality of life of patients with bipolar disorder and revolutionize public health. Biomarkers in Bipolar Disorders summarizes the cutting-edge findings in biomarkers research in Bipolar Disorders, emphasizing the most promising findings, tools and technologies relevant to drug development and personalized medicine. Key findings emphasizing different levels of evidence such as genes, molecules, cells, systems, brain and behavior related to diagnosis (state and trait/endophenotypes), prediction of treatment response and follow-up outcomes with as well as the most promising perspectives in each area are included in the book. Each section includes a comprehensive and focused overview on the state of the art and perspectives. The book concludes with a section on practical applications, encompassing diagnostics development (genetic testing, biomarkers), and new drug development. Edited by Dr. Rodrigo Machado-Vieira and Dr. Jair C. Soares, and contributed by leading experts in the field of biomarker research, this book will be become the leading tool for all researchers and clinicians in Bipolar Disorder. Book Description :

Neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, mood disorders, Alzheimer's disease, epilepsy, alcoholism, substance abuse and others are some of the most debilitating illnesses worldwide characterized by the complexity of causes, and lacking the laboratory tests that may promote diagnostic and prognostic procedures. Recent advances in neuroscience, genomic, genetic, proteomic and metabolomic knowledge and technologies have opened the way to searching biomarkers and endophenotypes, which may offer powerful and exciting opportunities to understand the etiology and the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms of neuropsychiatric disorders. The challenge now is to translate these advances into meaningful diagnostic and therapeutic advances. This book offers a broad synthesis of the current knowledge about diverse topics of the biomarker and endophenotype strategies in neuropsychiatry. The book is organized into four interconnected volumes: “Neuropsychological Endophenotypes and Biomarkers” (with overview of methodological issues of the biomarker and endophenotype approaches in neuropsychiatry and some technological advances), “Neuroanatomical and Neuroimaging Endophenotypes and Biomarkers”, “Metabolic and Peripheral Biomarkers” and “Molecular Genetic and Genomic Markers”. The contributors are internationally and nationally recognized researchers and experts from 16 countries. This four-volume handbook is intended for a broad spectrum of readers including neuroscientists, psychiatrists, neurologists, endocrinologists, pharmacologists, clinical psychologists, general practitioners, geriatricians, health care providers in the field of neurology and mental health interested in trends that have crystallized in the last decade, and trends that can be expected to further evolve in the coming years. Book Description :

After the original proposals of staging for psychotic disorders developed by McGorry and colleagues, a few systems have been put forward specifically for people with bipolar disorder. There is now consistent evidence that, at least for a significant portion of people with this disease, clinical course and outcome are not as benign as initially described. The evidence thus far points to relevant differences between early and late stages of bipolar disorders in the clinical course of illness, neurobiology and systemic pathology. These differences all suggest that staging is a viable addition to clinical care in bipolar disorder. Neuroprogression and Staging in Bipolar Disorder provides a comprehensive summary of the current state of the evidence regarding the use of staging systems in bipolar disorder. Edited by the leading researchers in the field, the book systematically covers the theoretical basis for staging, comparisons between different proposals, neurobiological underpinnings, the current evidence-base, limitations and future directions, and clinical implications and recommendations for practice. The book provides a solid and in-depth outline and thus to influence research and practice in the field of bipolar disorder.

"Bipolar disorders are among the more common conditions affecting humankind and are, consequently, leading causes of disability worldwide. These illnesses are dynamic and complex, so that identifying them and then provide optimal management can be challenging. Because of this complexity, these conditions often comprise a disproportionate amount of most psychiatric practices, as specialty care that exceeds what can be delivered by other practitioners is often required. With these challenges in mind, we created this book to provide a comprehensive, readable review of these illnesses with chapters written by international experts in bipolar disorder"--

Book Description :

Bipolar disorders affect up to 3% of the world's population and are the 6th leading cause of disability worldwide. The estimated annual costs of bipolar disorder approach $50 billion in the United States, and the associated societal and personal suffering is immeasurable. Bipolar disorder is a lifelong illness that typically begins in mid-adolescence, thereby disrupting healthy developmental processes. It is also a progressive illness, making early intervention even more critical. As the disorder presents differently in youth as it does in adults, considerable controversy exists around the diagnosis in young people. The neurobiological factors leading to the onset of bipolar disorder reflect abnormalities in adolescent brain development. Bipolar disorder is strongly heritable and therefore, these developmental abnormalities likely represent the culmination of processes that precede the expression of symptoms. Current studies of children who are at risk for bipolar disorder are identifying these processes. Again, controversy exists about how to move these neuroscience gains forward to help affected individuals and, particularly to manage children at risk to delay or prevent the onset or progression of bipolar disorder. With these considerations in mind, Bipolar Disorder in Youth provides a timely, focused review of the diagnosis, treatment, and neurobiology of bipolar disorder in youth. It addresses current controversies and resolves those in which evidence is available. The book is organized into three sections based on these topics to provide comprehensive discussions to aid clinicians managing these individuals in their practices, as well as scientists trying to advance the field. The three editors are widely recognized experts in bipolar disorder, and the authors of each chapter represent international experts in the respective topics. Consequently, this book is the most comprehensive volume available discussing this important population and is a 'must' for the libraries of clinicians and scientists working with bipolar children and adolescents.

Book Description :

This book presents an exploratory analysis based on proteomic and ionomics studies comparing the blood serum of patients with bipolar disorder (BD), healthy controls, patients with schizophrenia (SCZ), and patients with other disorders (OD) in order to identify biomarkers of BD. Bipolar disorder is a psychiatric condition that affects thousands of people worldwide. The absence of biomarkers for BD has resulted in misdiagnosis and ineffective treatment in some patients, causing additional health problems and high costs for health systems. As such, this book evaluates various strategies for sample preparation for proteomic and ionomic studies in order to simplify complex serum samples and allow the quantification of chemical species (proteins and metal ions), which are potential candidates for BD biomarkers. In addition, it describes the development of a new membrane-based methodology for extracting urine proteins to be used in biomarker discovery.
