Focused on Behavioral Evidence Analysis (BEA), a method of criminal profiling developed and refined by the author over the past 15 years, the fourth edition of Criminal Profiling maintains the same core foundation that made previous editions best sellers in the professional and academic community worldwide. Written from practicing behavioral analysts and aspiring students alike, this work emphasizes an honest understanding of crime and criminals. Newly updated, mechanisms for the examination and classification of both victim and offender behavior have been improved. In addition to refined approaches towards victimology, crime scene analysis, motivation and case linkage, a chapter on sexual deviance has been added as well. With prior edition in wide use as a primary text in criminal justice, law, criminology, and behavioral science programs around the world, Criminal Profiling, Fourth Edition remains essential for students and professionals alike. Outlines the scientific principles and practice standards of BEA-oriented criminal profiling, with an emphasis on applying theory to real cases. Book Description :

The criminal profiling community can easily be split into two separate groups: those that have written criminal profiles and those that have not. It is an important distinction, because report writing is one the most important requirements of good scientific practice. The process of writing up findings helps to reveal flaws in an examiner's logic so that they can be amended or revisited; the final report memorializes findings and their underlying basis at a fixed point in time; and as a document a forensic report provides the best mechanism for transparency and peer review. The problem is that many criminal profilers haven't written criminal profilers, and still more prefer that this remain the case, often to conceal their lack of methodology or ability. The contributors to this volume have travelled the world for more than a decade to lecture on the subjects of crime scene analysis and criminal profiling. The result has been a steady stream of requests continued from educational institutions and government agencies alike to teach the application of criminal profiling theory. Everyone has read the books, everyone has attended the lecture; but few have experience with hands on practice and application. In other words, there is a growing number of serious professionals that want to know how to put theory into practice, and then learn what it means to put their findings into written form. Behavioral Evidence Analysis: International Forensic Practice and Protocols has been written as a companion text to Turvey's Criminal Profiling, now in its 4th edition. It is meant to provide the legion of instructors that are teaching criminal profiling as a subject with real world examples of case reports. It is also meant to serve as a desk reference for professionals that are writing crime scene analysis and criminal profiling reports, to enable sampling of structure, terminology, and references.

Book Description :

The Psychology of Death Investigations outlines definitively how behavioral evidence can often provide the necessary components and "missing pieces" to complement physical evidence as an essential tool for incident reconstruction. In order to determine the direction of an investigation and to prioritize leads, if necessary, death investigators must establish the manner of a death: natural, accident, homicide or suicide. The most overlooked aspect of death investigation is the psychological dimension, which can provide unique leads, correct false assumptions, enhance investigative awareness, and solve cases in surprising ways. In an estimated 10–20% of cases, the manner of death cannot be determined, or worse, has been erroneously categorized. Since many jurisdictions can’t afford behavioral consultants, this book has been written to provide practical information for a basic psychological analysis. If the circumstances surrounding a death are equivocal, psychological consultants can compile information retrospectively about a deceased person’s mental state and possible motive to assist with unravelling ambiguity about the manner of death. This is the primary function of a psychological autopsy, and, as such, this is the first book of its kind dedicated solely to the topic. In the event that the manner of death is determined to be a homicide, behavioral profiling can help to focus the potential pool of suspects. Professionals and students alike will benefit from the exercise of cognitive awareness and the application of psychological logic presented. Psychologists, medical examiners, coroners, attorneys, fraud examiners, law enforcement personnel, death and homicide investigators, and students enrolled in criminal profiling, forensic psychology, and criminal justice programs will find this text to be a compelling and insightful reference to add to their professional toolkit.

Book Description :

Forensic Criminology gives students of criminology and criminal justice an introduction to the forensic realm and the applied forensic issues they will face when working cases within the justice system. It effectively bridges the theoretical world of social criminology with the applied world of the criminal justice system. While most of the competing textbooks on criminology adequately address the application and the social theory to the criminal justice system, the vast majority do not include casework or real-world issues that criminologists face. This book focuses on navigating casework in forensic contexts by case-working criminologists, rather than broad social theory. It also allows criminology/criminal justice instructors outside of the forensic sciences the ability to develop and instruct a core course that might otherwise be considered beyond their expertise, or in conflict with forensic courses taught in chemistry, biology, or medical programs at their institutions because of its focus on criminology and criminal justice careers. With its practical approach, this textbook is well-suited for forensic criminology subjects being taught and developed in law, criminology, and criminal justice programs around the world. Approaches the study of criminology from an applied standpoint, moving away from the purely theoretical Contains relevant and contemporary case examples to demonstrate the application of forensic criminology Provides an integrated philosophy with respect to criminology, forensic casework, criminal investigations, and the law Useful for students and professionals in the area of criminology, criminal justice, criminal investigation, forensic science, and the law

Book Description :

Inclusive Instruction forStudents with Emotional and Behavioral Disorders: Pulling Back the Curtain discusses the challenges of the increasingly common practice of educating students with disabilities in general education classrooms, citing that these challenges are often due to the fast pace of instruction, the emphasis on advanced concepts and skills that align with college and career-readiness standards, and the presence of poorly developed prerequisite skills that are necessary for traditional academic success. This book posits that these challenges are particularly salient to the education of students receiving special education services for emotional disturbance (ED), as students with ED have pervasive learning and behavioral difficulties that are often resistant to typical instruction and intervention. Contributors argue that despite increased awareness and application of inclusive mindsets, school and post-school outcomes for this student population continue to be a national concern in the United States. In this book, contributors provide recommendations for improving the manner in which schools serve this student population through inclusive measures, along with resources for administrators, teachers, and parents/guardians, that emphasize the provision of a free appropriate public education for students with ED. Scholars of education, disability studies, and psychology will find this book particularly useful.

Book Description :

Serial Crime, Second Edition, examines serial predatory behavior and is divided into two main parts. Part one deals with behavioral profiling, and covers a variety of critical issues from the history of profiling and the theoretical schools of thought to its treatment in the mainstream media. This updated edition includes new sections on the problems of induction, metacognition in criminal profiling, and investigative relevance. Part two deals more specifically with a number of types of serial crime including stalking, rape, murder, and arson. Chapters on each of these crimes provide definitions and thresholds, and discussions of the offenders, the crime, and its dynamics. Considerations for behavioral profiling and investigations and the development of new paradigms in each area are interwoven throughout. Topics are conceptually and practically related since profiling has typically seen most application in serial crimes and similar investigations. The unique presentation of the book successfully connects the concepts and creates links to criminal behavior across crimes—murder, sexual assault, and arson—something no other title does. The connection of serial behavior to profiling, the most useful tool in discovering behavior patterns, is also new to the body of literature available and serves to examine the ideal manner in which profiling can be used in conjunction with behavioral science to positively affect criminal investigations. * Provides a theoretical and practical foundation for understanding the motivation and dynamics in a range of serial offenses * Illustrates the promise, purposes and pitfalls of behavioral profiling in the investigation of various serial crimes * Numerous case examples show the real world uses of behavioral profiling in investigations, as well as highlighting a variety of issues in understanding and investigating serial crime

Book Description :

Racial profiling and border security have become characteristic features of governance in Western liberal democracies during the twenty-first century. This new collection provides an important multi-national perspective on an issue of great and growing concern, particularly but not exclusively in the context of corporate globalization and neo-liberal governance. Despite the growing significance of regimes of racial profiling, surveillance and tightened border controls in the post-9/11 period, there have been very few extended analyses of racial profiling in different eras and contexts, particularly at borders. The work examines the issue from a transborder perspective, with comparisons, connections and intersections of policy and practice. Chapters examine a range of topics including racial profiling and implications for inter/national and human security, racial profiling along borders in the US and the construction of "terrorists" and "illegal aliens," racial profiling and problems of proof and movements opposing racial profiling, among others. Overall, the chapters in this collection reframe racial profiling as a human rights rather than civil rights issue, making an important contribution to analyses of this important topic. About the editor: Jeff Shantz teaches critical theory, elite deviance, community and human rights in the Department of Criminology at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Metro Vancouver, Canada. He is the author of the book Living Anarchy: Theory and Practice in Anarchist Movements. His writings have appeared in leading international journals including Critical Sociology, Critique of Anthropology, Feminist Review and New Politics as well as numerous anthologies. A longtime community organizer, he has been a member of the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty and host of the weekly "Anti-Poverty Report" on radio stations CHRY and CKLN in Toronto, Canada. Dr. Shantz received his Ph.D. from York University in Toronto.

Book Description :

Published in 2009, the first edition of Forensic Victimology introduced criminologists and criminal investigators to the idea of systematically gathering and examining victim information for the purposes of addressing investigative and forensic issues. The concepts presented within immediately proved vital to social scientists researching victims-offender relationships; investigators and forensic scientists seeking to reconstruct events and establish the elements of a crime; and criminal profilers seeking to link pattern crimes. This is because the principles and guidelines in Forensic Victimology were written to serve criminal investigation and anticipate courtroom testimony. As with the first, this second edition of Forensic Victimology is an applied presentation of a traditionally theoretical subject written by criminal justice practitioners with years of experience-both in the field and in the classroom. It distinguishes the investigative and forensic aspects of applied victim study as necessary adjuncts to what has often been considered a theoretical field. It then identifies the benefits of forensic victimology to casework, providing clearly defined methods and those standards of practice necessary for effectively serving the criminal justice system. 30% new content, with new chapters on Emergency Services, False Confessions, and Human Trafficking Use of up-to-date references and case examples to demonstrate the application of forensic victimology Provides context and scope for both the investigative and forensic aspects of case examination and evidence interpretation Approaches the study of victimology from a realistic standpoint, moving away from stereotypes and archetypes Useful for students and professionals working in relation to behavioral science, criminology, criminal justice, forensic science, and criminal investigation
