The Fifth Edition of "Basic Conducting Techniques" provides sound, practical, hands-on procedures, techniques, guidance, and materials for the beginning conducting class. Joseph A. Labuta, an experienced musician and educator, employs a broad repertory of musical excerpts and scores, most reduced to four-part format, which enables students to work with an ensemble of class members to practice conducting and rehearsal techniques at each class meeting. Features: Along with each carefully selected example from music literature are specific instructions keyed to the text, identifying conducting problems the student must master to develop conducting skills. Excerpts include orchestral materials, band scores, as well as choral music excerpts, choral scores, and choral rehearsal techniques. Modular format for self-paced learning; provisions for ongoing student evaluation, including rating scales, checklists, and analytical guides. Alternate approaches for use of the materials provided to the instructor. New to the Fifth Edition: Transposed parts for the musical excerpts in Part III. Book Description :

Expressive Conducting: Movement and Performance Theory for Conductors applies the insight of movement and performance theory to the practice of conducting, offering a groundbreaking new approach to conducting. Where traditional conducting pedagogies often place emphasis on training parts of the body in isolation, Expressive Conducting teaches conductors to understand their gestures as part of an interconnected system that incorporates the whole body. Rather than emphasizing learning specific patterns and gestures, this book enables student and professional conductors to develop a conducting technique that is centered around expressing the themes of the music. Drawing parallels to the worlds of acting, this text treats the body as the conductor’s instrument. Coaching notes derived from years of experience as a performance movement specialist offer readers approachable methods for eliminating communication barriers—both conscious and subconscious—to encourage optimal performance, highlighting acting theory, movement exercises and the significance of weight distribution. Unlike other conducting approaches, this text understands that conducting resonates throughout the entire body and is not conveyed by the hands or baton alone. With a comprehensive consideration of the conductor’s body and movements, featuring over 50 original illustrations, Expressive Conducting advances strategies for improving one’s conducting skills in rehearsal and performance. Jerald Schwiebert has developed a practical language for expressive conducting. Together, Schwiebert and Barr present a text that is suitable for conducting students, instructors, and professionals alike.

Book Description :

Across a wide range of programs in international higher education, students prepare themselves for a career in their professional field. Learning how to communicate as a professional is an essential part of that preparation. In order to carry out their communication tasks, professionals must possess a large repertoire of knowledge and skills. They also must be able to decide what best suits the situation and the goals they want to achieve. Already during their training, students come across a variety of communication tasks that are largely new to them. For these tasks, too, they need a broad knowledge and skills repertoire from which they can make the right choices. Communicate as a Professional offers a solid foundation for students to develop the communication knowledge and skills they need, both when working as a professional after they have graduated and when following an educational program that prepares them for this future. Communicate as a Professional is the revised English version of the book Leren Communiceren, published with Noordhoff Uitgevers. More information and supporting materials

A Conducting Workbook

Book Description :

The Twentieth-Century has been a period of vast experimentation and exploration in music. These experiments have focused on many of music's parameters, among them not only pitch, but rhythm, articulations, dynamics, timbre, and density. This has resulted in an expansion of the ideas and techniques that musicians must be familiar with to accurately perform the music. The Conductor has been most directly affected by the increased exploration and focus on rhythm. It is the conductor's primary responsibility to guide an ensemble through a composition by providing a visual beat through a series of beat patterns. The beats and beat patterns are directly related to the rhythms of the composition, and provide a reference for the ensemble to perform the rhythms. Because of the new rhythm ideas presented in Twentieth-Century music, it has become necessary for conductors to expand their conducting techniques so that these ideas will be accurately conveyed. This workbook serves two purposes. First, to discuss the common rhythm problems that a conductor will face when conducting many Twentieth-Century compositions. Secondly, it provides musical etudes which address each problem so that the conductor can practice the new techniques with live musicians. The etudes were composed so they can be accurately performed by any instrumentation which might be available. This workbook is designed to be used as a self-contained textbook for a one to two semester advanced conducting class. The students should already be familiar with the basic techniques of conducting, including beat patterns, pattern styles, cueing, attacks and releases, and crescendos and decrescendos. The workbook is presented in six chapters. Chapters one through five each address a different rhythm problem associated with Twentieth-Century music. Each chapter is followed by an etude which addresses the previously discussed rhythm problem. Chapter six and its accompanying etude are to be used as the final exam for the course. They present all of the previously discussed rhythm problems in various combinations with one another.

Book Description :

"The book is organized into two parts. Part I, "The Young Singer," is an introduction to 90 sequential singing exercises detailed in Part II. Here, Phillips provides historical and philosophical perspectives on procedures of vocal training for children and adolescents. Included are discussions on the physiology of the singing voice, proper vocal techniques, the vocal parameters of pitch, registers, and range, and a special section on common vocal disorders and proper vocal hygiene." "Part II, "Vocal Technique for Young Singers," examines aspects of vocal technique by grouping the exercises into five major areas: respiration, the foundation for good singing technique; phonation, developing children's speaking voices as a natural part of voice training; resonant tone production; diction, emphasizing uniform vowels and rapid consonant articulation; and expression, studying how phrasing, dynamic and tempo variation, and mood lead to meaningful interpretation."

Book Description :

difficult, to represent it as the surgeon sees it, and to understand the anat omy, which is not always visible. In part, this was accomplished by paint ing on both surfaces of transparent paper to create the illusion of looking through superficial layers to the deeper structures. A combination of color media, including colored pencil, graphite, carbon, pastels, and transparent and opaque watercolors, enabled me to convey the field with minimal loss of reality or dimension. Of equal importance was the availability, for every illustration, of direct surgical observation, surgical photographs, fresh specimens, and the surgical instruments. The sequence of creation was first the discus sion of desired illustrations, then a rough sketch, consultation with the surgeons, finished pencil drawing, another consultation, and finally the color rendering. These color renderings were then checked against actual surgery for accuracy in representation of tissues, instrumentation, tissue responses to manipulation, and consistency of representation. From these processes evolved a technique that facilitated the flow of information, in logical sequence, from one step to the next and from one procedure to another, always focusing the attention of the audience toward what is pertinent and away from the extraneous.
