Book Description :

The Eighth Edition of Zumdahl and DeCoste's best-selling INTRODUCTORY CHEMISTRY: A FOUNDATION combines enhanced problem-solving structure with substantial pedagogy to enable students to become strong independent problem solvers in the introductory course and beyond. Capturing student interest through early coverage of chemical reactions, accessible explanations and visualizations, and an emphasis on everyday applications, the authors explain chemical concepts by starting with the basics, using symbols or diagrams, and conclude by encouraging students to test their own understanding of the solution. This step-by-step approach has already helped hundreds of thousands of students master chemical concepts and develop problem-solving skills. The book is known for its focus on conceptual learning and for the way it motivates students by connecting chemical principles to real-life experiences in chapter-opening discussions and Chemistry in Focus boxes. Book Description :

Chemistry can be a daunting subject for the uninitiated, and all too often, introductory textbooks do little to make students feel at ease with the complex subject matter. Basic Chemistry Concepts and Exercises brings the wisdom of John Kenkel’s more than 35 years of teaching experience to communicate the fundamentals of chemistry in a practical, down-to-earth manner. Using conversational language and logically assembled graphics, the book concisely introduces each topic without overwhelming students with unnecessary detail. Example problems and end-of-chapter questions emphasize repetition of concepts, preparing students to become adept at the basics before they progress to an advanced general chemistry course. Enhanced with visualization techniques such as the first chapter’s mythical microscope, the book clarifies challenging, abstract ideas and stimulates curiosity into what can otherwise be an overwhelming topic. Topics discussed in this reader-friendly text include: Properties and structure of matter Atoms, molecules, and compounds The Periodic Table Atomic weight, formula weights, and moles Gases and solutions Chemical equilibrium Acids, bases, and pH Organic chemicals The appendix contains answers to the homework exercises so students can check their work and receive instant feedback as to whether they have adequately grasped the concepts before moving on to the next section. Designed to help students embrace chemistry not with trepidation, but with confidence, this solid preparatory text forms a firm foundation for more advanced chemistry training.

Book Description :

The 9 th edition of Malone′s Basic Concepts of Chemistry provides many new and advanced features that continue to address general chemistry topics with an emphasis on outcomes assessment. New and advanced features include an objectives grid at the end of each chapter which ties the objectives to examples within the sections, assessment exercises at the end each section, and relevant chapter problems at the end of each chapter. Within WileyPLUS, content is organized into "concept modules" that contain clear learning objectives from the text; examples, to help "show" how to do things; and automatically graded practice problems embedded in the content, to test knowledge. A new Math Check allows quick access to the needed basic skill. The first chapter now includes brief introductions to several fundamental chemical concepts and Chapter Synthesis Problems have been added to the end of each chapter to bring key concepts into one encompassing problem. Every concept in the text is clearly illustrated with one or more step by step examples. Making it Real essays have been updated to present timely and engaging real–world applications, emphasizing the relevance of the material they are learning. This edition continues the end of chapter Student Workshop activities to cater to the many different learning styles and to engage users in the practical aspect of the material discussed in the chapter.

Book Description :

Written for students taking either the University of Cambridge O-level examinations or the GCSE examinations, this guidebook covers essential topics and concepts under stipulated chemistry syllabi. The topics are explored through an explanatory and inquiry-based approach. They are interrelated and easy to understand, with succinct explanations/examples being included, especially on areas that students frequently find difficult. Topics address the whys and hows behind key concepts to be mastered, so that the concepts are made understandable and intuitive for students. The focus is on conceptual learning so as to equip students with knowledge for critical learning and problem solving. The authors have also retained the popular discourse feature from their previous four books — Understanding Advanced Physical Inorganic Chemistry, Understanding Advanced Organic and Analytical Chemistry, Understanding Advanced Chemistry Through Problem Solving, and Understanding Basic Chemistry — to help the learners better understand and see for themselves, how the concepts should be applied during problems solving. Based on the Socratic Method, questions are implanted throughout the book to help facilitate the reader's development in forming logical conclusions of concepts and the way they are being applied to explain the problems. In addition, the authors have also included important summaries and concept maps to help the learners to recall, remember, reinforce and apply the fundamental chemical concepts in a simple way. Through their many years of teaching experiences, the authors have acquired a sound awareness of common students' misconceptions which are relayed through the questions and thus help to reinforce concepts learnt. This book is essential and useful to help students adequately prepare for the high-stake examinations.

Book Description :

On prolonged heating in dilute nitric acid (0.5M to 6.8M) a considerable amount of Pu(+4) is oxidized to Pu(+8). Precipitation of the plus three plutonium oxalate is complete in fifteen minutes. Oxidation of Pu(+4) to Pu(+8) by bromine is quantitative at 105 deg C after 1/2 hour; at 50 deg C the rate of oxidation is slow, but measurable. At room temperature the rate is too slow to measure. A method of converting PuC13 to Pu(NO3)4 is given. A solubility of NaPuO2Ac3 increases with temperature the value at 25 deg C being 19.5 g/iiter and that at 95 deg C, 37.5 g/liter. Supersaturation was observed on slow cooling of a saturated solution. p2.

Book Description :

Pergamon Series in Analytical Chemistry, Volume 2: Basic Analytical Chemistry brings together numerous studies of the vast expansion in the use of classical and instrumental methods of analysis. This book is composed of six chapters. After providing a theoretical background of analytical chemistry, this book goes on dealing with the fundamental principles of chemical equilibria in solution. The subsequent chapters consider the advances in qualitative and quantitative chemical analyses. These chapters present a unified view of these analyses based on the Bronsted-Lowry theory and the donor-acceptor principle. These topics are followed by discussions on instrumental analysis using various methods, including electrochemical, optical, spectroscopic, and thermal methods, as well as radioactive isotopes. The finals chapters examine the separation methods and the essential features of organic chemical analysis that are different from methods for inorganic compounds. This book is of value to analytical chemists and researchers.

Book Description :

This suite of linear teaching programmes in areas of basic organic chemistry was developed for use by first year undergraduates at Sussex University where it has proved extremely popular. The concepts treated in the seven programmes are fundamental to any introductory course in organic chemistry and include certain intellectual techniques, such as curly arrows which students often find difficult, but which need to be fully mastered. With tutorial time increasingly short, this self-study text should prove invaluable to students of chemistry, biology or pre-clinical medicine taking a first course in organic chemistry.
