Book Description :

Atlas of Deformed and Metamorphosed Rocks from Proterozoic Orogens is a richly illustrated reference book featuring over 660 full-color field images of a range of lithologies from some Proterozoic terrains that were subjected to multiple events of magmatism, deformation, metamorphism, and metasomatism. The Atlas focuses on amphibolite to granulite facies lithologies and associated ma?c-ultrama?c rocks from Proterozoic orogens of India, Sri Lanka, Botswana, South Africa, East Antarctica, and Western Australia. Each chapter in the book begins with a brief review of geology, including deformation and metamorphic history, along with a regional geological map to help readers to visualize the ?eld observations in the relevant geological context. Each image is accompanied by a concise description providing location, lithology, structural fabric, possible deformational history, metamorphic features, partial melting, metasomatism, and other important crustal processes. This Atlas is an important source of information for a broad range of earth scientists, graduate and undergraduate students, researchers, academicians, and other professionals. This book will form a great treasure to those geoscientists who never had an opportunity to visit any of the Proterozoic orogenic belts. Features over 660 full-color photographs representing typical lithologies and associated structural, metamorphic features, and other crustal processes from different Proterozoic orogens. Highlights the significance of field photographs in advancing new knowledge which may provide pathways for new research. Covers many important Proterozoic terranes of East Gondwana. Presents regional geologic maps from each Proterozoic orogen.

Book Description :

Evidence for Early Proterozoic north-verging folding and thrusting in the continental foreland of the Penokean orogen is present in two widely separated areas in northern Michigan. In the eastern part of the exposed orogen, asymmetric to over-turned folds in the Early Proterozoic Michigamme Formation suggest an initial (D1) phase of possibly north verging thin-skinned deformation. A second phase (D2 ) is characterized by a more thick skinned deformation consisting of northward thrusting of Archean gneiss and overlying Early Proterozoic quartzite along ductile thrust faults. Crosscutting shear zones indicate a third phase (D3 ) of deformation involving east- northeast thrusting of Archean gneiss. Thick-skinned deformation D2 and D3 phases include spaced fracture cleavage, kink folds, and lineations in D1, foliation surfaces. Near the west end of the exposed orogen in Michigan, bedding-cleavage relationships in the Early Proterozoic Tyler Formation also indicate northward tectonic transport. These structures, which are interpreted as D1 lie along the north edge of the Archean Puritan batholith and associated Archean greenstone. The north-verging structures in the northern Michigan segment of the Penokean orogen were formed approximately 1,850 Ma during collision of the Wisconsin magmatic terranes with the continental foreland of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota.

Book Description :

The Murzuq Basin is a large intracratonic sag basin located in southwestern Libya. Exploration efforts started in this vast and remote Saharan region already in 1957 and 60 exploratory wells have been drilled to date, resulting in over 20 discoveries with around 4,000 million barrels of oil in place. Most discoveries have been made in Ordovician sandstone reservoirs sourced by hot shales of the Lower Silurian Tanezzuft Formation. Oil is already being produced and exported from the area, but the basin's total hydrocarbon potential is still poorly understood. Recent exploration - especially the major discovery and initial development of the Giant "Elephant" Field - has greatly increased interest for the area's potential. Many petroleum geologists and companies now believe that the basin may well develop into a new major hydrocarbon province which will significantly contribute to Europe's energy needs in the next decades. This book presents papers from a conference held at Sebha University - on the eastern margins of the Murzug Basin - in September 1998. The book continues an ongoing series of presentations of the geology of Libya, but the 25 contributions herein mostly centre on the Murzuq Basin itself and on nearby areas. There are still many unresolved questions in terms of geological and hydrocarbon exploration in these difficult desert areas, but the papers herein will hopefully present a first comprehensive overview of an exciting frontier exploration region. About half of the papers are directly related to hydrocarbon exploration, and to source rock and reservoir development, but a wide variety of other features are also described, ranging from palaeontology and biostratigraphy to ore geology and water resources, covering the entire geological column from the Precambrian to the Holocene. The book concludes with a bibliography covering all geological aspects of this challenging but very promising frontier area.

Introducing Tectonics Rock Structures and Mountain Belts

Book Description :

Introducing Tectonics, Rock Structures and Mountain Belts is written to explain the key concepts of tectonics and rock structures to students and to the interested non-specialist, especially those without a strong mathematical background. The study and understanding of geological structures has traditionally been guided by the rigorous application of mathematics and physics but, in this book, Graham Park has avoided mathematical equations altogether and has reduced the geometry to the minimum necessary. The application of plate tectonic theory has revolutionised structural geology by giving the study of rock structures a context in which they can be explained. Since the large-scale movements of the plates ultimately control smaller-scale structures, the study of tectonics is the key to understanding the latter. The reader is thus introduced to large-scale Earth structure and the theory of plate tectonics before dealing with geological structures such as faults and folds. Studies by structural geologists of the movement history of rock masses relative to each other, as revealed by the study of fault systems and shear zones, has helped to integrate rock structures with plate tectonics and this has been emphasised in the book. One of the most exciting aspects of geology is the study of the great mountain ranges, orogenic belts. The final three chapters of the book explain how knowledge of plate tectonic theory, geological structures and the processes of deformation may be employed to understand these orogenic belts. hilst excessive use of terminology is avoided, all technical terms are in a Glossary and, as with all books in this series, the text is illustrated profusely.

Book Description :

The Felch and Calumet troughs area of northern Michigan is part of the Penokean fold-thrust belt of the continental foreland of the Superior craton. The area lies immediately north of the Niagara fault zone, the north-verging suture between the continental foreland and the Early Proterozoic Wisconsin magmatic terranes to the south. Accretion of the magmatic terranes to the continental margin approximately equals 1,850 Ma produced south-verging backthrusting and backfolding in this region involving both Archean basement and Early Proterozoic supracrustal strata. Evidence for backthrusting exists throughoutthe Felch and Calumet troughs area. The backthrusting is characterized by southward-overturned bedding and small-scale, south-verging asymmetric folds with a subhorizontal axial-planar foliation. The Carney Lake Archean block appears to be a crystalline-core nappe wherein the Sturgeon Quartzite of the Chocolay Group forms the lower overturned limb. The deformation probably started as a north-verging foreland thrust event, but out-of- sequence south-verging backthrusts and backfolds developed to accommodate abrupt changes in crustal thickness along the continental margin. The backthrusting in the Penokean orogen resembles that in the younger rocks of the southern Alps. Proceeding inward from the continental margin, both orogens have accreted oceanic crust, indicated by the presence of ophiolite, that is thrust onto the continental margin; a zone of thick-skinned complex deformation characterized by backthrusting and backfolding; a marginal basement arch; and, inboard of the arch, a fold-thrust belt that mainly involves thin-skinned deformation.
