Book Description :

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products—we can't livewithout them. Can the environment survive with them? Pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) areincreasingly being recognized as micropollutants. In this context, pharmaceutical products encompass a diverse range of drugs used totreat various illnesses, and personal care products includeeveryday items such as soaps, fragrances, cleaning agents, disinfectants, and similar products. Written for professionals fromdifferent backgrounds, Pharma-Ecology bridges the knowledgeand language gap and critically examines the issue of PPCPmicropollutants and how to best minimize their impact on theenvironment. Organized systematically, it: Presents a range of pharmaceutical compounds categorized bymode of action and common usage, displaying the volumes (or numberof prescriptions) that are dispersed Discusses the detection of PPCPs in the environment usinginstrumentation and bioassay techniques, including microarrays Covers the occurrences of PPCPs in aquatic systems, sediments, soil, and aerial environments Considers the persistence and degradation of PPCPs in theenvironment, and links pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics with thekinetics of PPCPs in the environment Explores engineering and treatment techniques that couldminimize the impact of PPCPs in the environment Includes numerous tables and figures that illustrateinformation This is an enlightening reference for engineers, toxicologists, ecologists, micro-biologists, and chemists involved in pollutionand environmental analysis; policy-makers; professionals in federaland state regulatory agencies; and pharmaceutical professionals. Itis also an excellent text for undergraduate and graduate studentsin related fields.

Book Description :

The impact of pollution on fisheries and the potential health implications of eating contaminated fish are areas of considerable concern for the fishing and aquaculture communities, government bodies and the general public. Pollution, as well as over fishing, may well be contributory to recent serious declines in global fish stocks. Effects of Pollution on Fish brings together the work of many international experts each of whom have examined the literature on marine and freshwater fish and, where appropriate, invertebrates, to produce comprehensive chapters covering all major aspects of the impacts of pollution on fish and fisheries. The book describes these impacts in detail, from the molecular and sub-cellular level, through organism to population and community levels, and subsequently to socio-economic implications. The editors of this thorough and timely book have drawn together contributions encompassing molecular genetics, biochemistry, physiology, population and community biology, and fishery economics. As such, this important book will be of great use and interest to students and professionals studying and teaching in all those subject areas. Fish biologists, environmental scientists and ecotoxicologists, marine and freshwater ecologists, fisheries managers, aquaculture personnel and fish farmers, as well as fish veterinarians will all find much of great value within this book. Libraries in universities and research establishments concerned with these areas should all have copies of this book on their shelves.

Book Description :

Drug overdose, driven largely by overdose related to the use of opioids, is now the leading cause of unintentional injury death in the United States. The ongoing opioid crisis lies at the intersection of two public health challenges: reducing the burden of suffering from pain and containing the rising toll of the harms that can arise from the use of opioid medications. Chronic pain and opioid use disorder both represent complex human conditions affecting millions of Americans and causing untold disability and loss of function. In the context of the growing opioid problem, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) launched an Opioids Action Plan in early 2016. As part of this plan, the FDA asked the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to convene a committee to update the state of the science on pain research, care, and education and to identify actions the FDA and others can take to respond to the opioid epidemic, with a particular focus on informing FDA's development of a formal method for incorporating individual and societal considerations into its risk-benefit framework for opioid approval and monitoring.

Book Description :

Social pressure to minimize the use of animal testing, the ever-increasing concern on animal welfare, and the need for more human-relevant and more predictive toxicity tests are some of the drivers for new approaches to chemical screening. This book focuses on The Adverse Outcome Pathway, an analytical construct that describes a sequential chain of causally linked events at different levels of biological organization that lead to an adverse health or ecotoxicological effect. While past efforts have focused on toxicological pathway-based vision for human and ecological health assessment relying on in vitro systems and predictive models, The Adverse Outcome Pathway framework provides a simplified and structured way to organize toxicological information. Within the book, a systems biology approach supplies the tools to infer, link, and quantify the molecular initiating events and the key events and key event relationships leading to adverse outcomes. The advancement of these tools is crucial for the successful implementation of AOPs for regulatory purposes.
