Book Description :

Animal Vigilance builds on the author’s previous publication with Academic Press (Social Predation: How Group Living Benefits Predators and Prey) by developing several other themes including the development and mechanisms underlying vigilance, as well as developing more fully the evolution and function of vigilance. Animal vigilance has been at the forefront of research on animal behavior for many years, but no comprehensive review of this topic has existed. Students of animal behavior have focused on many aspects of animal vigilance, from models of its adaptive value to empirical research in the laboratory and in the field. The vast literature on vigilance is widely dispersed with often little contact between models and empirical work and between researchers focusing on different taxa such as birds and mammals. Animal Vigilance fills this gap in the available material. Tackles vigilance from all angles, theoretical and empirical, while including the broadest range of species to underscore unifying themes Discusses several newer developments in the area, such as vigilance copying and effect of food density Highlights recent challenges to assumptions of traditional models of vigilance, such as the assumption that vigilance is independent among group members, which is reviewed during discussion of synchronization and coordination of vigilance in a group Written by a top expert in animal vigilance

Book Description :

This volume contains the proceedings of a symposium held in St. Vincent, Italy, on August 3-6,1976, entitled "Vigilance II: Relationships Among Theory, Physiological Correlates, and Opera tional Performance." The symposium was sponsored jointly by the Human Factors Panel of the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO and by the Physiology Programs Office of the U.S. Office of Naval Research (Contract N00014-76-C-0722). These sponsorships, and the helpful assistance of Dr. Donald P. Woodward and Dr. John A. Nagay, are gratefully acknowledged. Following the editor's introduction, the papers appear in the order they were given at St. Vincent. In general they are grouped according to the main topical themes of the symposium: keynote ad dress, vehicle operation, monitoring and inspection, physiological correlates, stress effects, individual differences, and theoretical considerations. I must point out, however, that individual papers often overlapped several of these topical areas and thus no defini tive partitioning of the proceedings has been attempted. I wish to acknowledge the many contributions of my colleague, Dr. James O'Hanlon, to both the planning of the symposium and the preparation of the manuscript, and the invaluable role of my wife, Shirley Jean, in making the symposium such a pleasant one for all. In addition, I wish to recognize the countless contributions of Lynda Lee Chilton and Katherine Peimann whose performance in compos ing, typing, and proofing the manuscript is certainly a tribute to human vigilance, and endurance as well.

Book Description :

Vigilance: The Problem of Sustained Attention deals with vigilance and how the ability to sustain attention is influenced by certain definite conditions of the external and internal environment. Topics covered range from factors affecting vigilance performance to the physiological correlates of vigilance, theories of vigilance performance, and the relationship between arousal and vigilance performance. This volume is comprised of six chapters and begins with an overview of research on vigilance behavior, followed by a discussion on some of the factors affecting vigilance performance, including signal frequency and personality. Subsequent chapters explore physiological correlates of vigilance such as galvanic skin resistance and cortical evoked potentials; reinforcement theory, expectancy theory, and other theories of vigilance performance; and arousal theory and the phenomenon of time error. The final chapter considers some of the conditions that improve vigilance performance, along with the correlation between vigilance and arousal. This book will be of interest to psychologists.

Book Description :

This collection advances vigilance as a critical feminist concept and strategy for addressing contemporary challenges. The assembled chapters develop feminist vigilance by elaborating concrete examples that emphasize action, ethics, and hope. Chapter authors expand on current feminist discussions about such issues as Black women’s self-care and anticipatory vigilance; media portrayals of race, gender, and violence; religion and social justice; technofeminist activism; postcolonial feminist critique; research ethics; and collective civic action. The contributions engage with larger discussions of social precarity, public anxiety, post-feminist appeals, and future feminist trajectories. Particular benefits of the collection include relatable content based in contemporary experiences, insightful and pragmatic conceptions of vigilance from feminist perspectives, and critical engagement with issues of intersectionality, agency, embodiment, and care ethics. The collection aims to address the need for productive academic responses to contemporary challenges to gendered identities, feminism, and intersectional relations that avoid abstractions or overwhelmingly negative analyses. Instead, this collection invites readers to engage in feminist vigilance as a fresh perspective, commitment, and strategy.

Book Description :

Predation is an important agent of natural selection in animal communities and so vigilance behaviour has very high selection pressure acting upon it. During feeding bouts, though, herbivores tend to experience a trade-off between vigilance and foraging. Thus, vigilance as a behaviour pattern, ought to be tightly regulated by the cost-benefit ratios. A study on vigilance behaviour of chital (Axis axis) was conducted at Pench Tiger Reserve, Madhya Pradesh, India, from December 2008 to April 2009. The objectives were to examine the determinants of individual and group vigilance in chital; and also to examine the effect of conspecific behaviour on individual vigilance. What emerges is an interesting account of how vigilance behaviour is governed by group size, habitat visibility and the density of animals in the group. The results also allow a comparison of competing hypothesis to explain vigilance patterns and provide valuable insights into intra-specific variation.

Book Description :

There has been a lot written about animal welfare in intensive farming systems, but very little about animals reared in extensive agricultural systems. Yet these animals make up a significant proportion of the world's farm animal population, covering a significant portion of the globe. Animals kept in extensive conditions face their own unique set of challenges that are vital for anyone with an interest in farm animal welfare to understand. Animal Welfare in Extensive Production Systems presents those challenges in a practical way, backed up with thoroughly referenced research. Topics covered include: heat stress, water quality and availability, nutrition, predation, poisonous plants, transport, human-animal interactions, and neonatal mortality. This book is ideal for animal welfare academics, students and researchers. It can also be beneficial to students in animal science, veterinary science and agriculture, and to farm industry producers and personnel. The Farm Animal Welfare Education Centre (FAWEC) is based at the School of Veterinary Science of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (Spain). FAWEC works with farmers, veterinarians and the livestock sector in general to improve farm animal welfare. Its main activity is to provide practical, science-based training and education on the welfare of farm animals. *** "...'Animal Welfare in Extensive Production Systems' is an unreservedly recommended addition to college and university library Agricultural & Veterinary Medicine collections and supplemental studies reading lists. --Midwest Book Review, Library Bookwatch: February 2017, The Agriculture Shelf (Series: The Animal Welfare Series) [Subject: Veterinary Medicine, Farming]
