Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: The connections between the mobility of the jaw region and that of the cervical spine have been the subject of research on many occasions in recent decades. For example, Ridder gives an overview of experiments conducted on animals by Japanese scientists in his monograph Functional impairments in the jaw and tooth malalignment and their effects on the periphery of the body . In this monograph, he describes investigations that tested the effects of changes in the dental and jaw regions, and that persisted in the long-term, on the periphery of the body. In the quadrant theory, Guzay outlines that the centre of the movements of the jaw does not lie within the temporomandibular joint itself. He describes how the movements of the jaw occur around a region in the upper cervical spine, namely around the atlanto-axial joint. Based on this proposition, he declares (ibid.) that inadequate dental occlusion can result in spinal malalignment, leading to curvature of the body axis. Maehara tested the propositions put forward in the quadrant theory by shortening the right-hand teeth in rats. He subsequently observed scoliosis of the spine and variation in the size of the right and left eyes. In addition, he shortened the teeth in Beagle dogs. As a result, the dogs exhibited bad posture, changes to their fur, watery eyes and cataracts. Maehara & Hashimoto then also shortened some of the teeth in monkeys. They observed that the monkeys suffered from loss of fur, exhibited abnormal behaviour and that their tongues were bent. Following this, a stencil-like splint was fitted to the shortened teeth to restore the original tooth height. This resulted in growth of the monkeys' fur, normal behaviour and a straightening of the tongues. In a further experiment, Maehara & Azuma shortened the teeth in guinea pigs. The guinea pigs lost weight after two weeks. Weight loss was greater in these animals than in control animals that were starved. After one week, electro-cardiograms of the guinea pigs exhibited a negative T wave, indicating cardiac insufficiency. The researchers then also shortened the teeth in the control group, which resulted in the negative T wave being exhibited by all animals. Based on these results, the question arises as to whether functional connections in the dental and jaw regions also exert effects on the periphery of the body in humans. Several publications indicate that this may be so. For example, Stiesch-Scholz et al. also [...]

Book Description :

This is the first Anatomy and Physiology (A&P) book designed specifically for Nursing and Health Professionals. The text adopts an applied and visual approach to help you to engage with this exciting and sometimes complex subject. The book provides a wealth of amazing body facts to help you to remember key points whilst also giving you an appreciation of just how amazing the human design really is. Terminology and pronunciation guides help you to feel confident when using medical terms in practice, and case studies encourage you to link theory with 'real world' clinical applications. The text is supported by an interesting companion website where you can view further animations and complete various exercises; together the text and website will take you on an exciting and interactive journey through the structure and functions of the human body! "Aimed specifically at students and those returning to nursing, this book should dispel any fears. It informs the reader of the key facts, but the authors are mindful not to overwhelm their readers nor to over-burden with detail. ... It is an ideal book to have close by for anyone studying nursing. ... Recommended." Karen Smyth, Nursing Student, University of Ulster, THES, Feb 2010 "At last a good text adapted for the UK market. Having listened to the pronunciation guide I am happy now to recommend this text. Good points: case studies linked to UK practice, I like the combination approach, the study skills advice, the targetting of learning theory to learning A&P, including adrenaline with epinephrine in brackets, interspersing calculations as exercises, good test activities, good reading for intro to A&P (ch. 2), good references (eg ch3), good reference to child/infant for burn extimation, good clinical application (eg assessing peripheral perfusion activity -pinching nail), good to see photographs." Penny Goacher, School of Nursing and Midwifery, University of East Anglia "This fabulous book presents anatomy and physiology in a visually stimulating way, taking readers on a journey through what many view as a complex maze of systems. It embraces a variety of approaches to learning, with chapters on the body systems, sections on learning the language of anatomy, reading the body map, biochemistry, and study skills. The information is presented in a way that makes this book invaluable" Valerie McGurk, practice development facilitator, paediatrics, Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust (reviewed in Nursing Standard magazine, July 7-13 2010 edition)

Book Description :

Ricardo Iznaola's long-awaited Summa Kitharologica (vol. 1) is the culmination of three decades of deep exploration of the guitarist's playing mechanism and is the most comprehensive presentation of his thinking about these matters to date. Structured in three chapters, Chapter 1 surveys basic anatomy and physiology of the upper limb, with additional sections discussing general pedagogical considerations. Chapter 2, devoted to the right hand, presents detailed information regarding digital joint behavior in general and as applied in actualactivity on the guitar, as well as introducing an analytical system to study anddescribe positional attitudes, or `frames', adopted by the hand in the course ofplaying. Chapter 3 discusses at length left-hand physiomechanics, taking the concepts of shifting and mobility as fundamental categories encompassing all aspects of left-hand technique. Twenty-six anatomical figures, over fifty photosand more than sixty musical examples, with access to online video amply illustrate the text. In the spirit of ground-breaking scientific pioneers, celebrated performer and pedagogue Ricardo Iznaola offers the guitar world the first volume of SummaKitharologica, a comprehensive and highly insightful examination of guitar technique in a remarkable mixture of soaring erudition and down-to-earth practical and applicable approaches to the instrument. Like a modern-day Charles Darwin of the guitar, his insatiable passion for discovery, keen eye of the `naturalist' and relentless analytical mind have carefully and methodically recorded previously little-known or little-recognized observations, relationships and nuances about the natural principles at work in artful guitar playing. For guitar instructors, serious students and even advanced performers who desire to go beyond the `what' ofguitar technique and delve into its `whys' and `hows', this may well be thedefinitive text. Book Description :

The third edition of Physiology and Anatomy for Nurses and Healthcare Practitioners: A homeostatic approach presents homeostasis as a dynamic concept that provides the basis for understanding health and well-being. It recognises how failure to respond to homeostatic disturbances results in imbalances responsible for signs and symptoms of ill-health, and describes how healthcare interventions seek to reverse those imbalances. Accompanied by colour illustrations and a description of related anatomy, the book provides an integrated explanation of body functioning. It discusses the organisation of the human body, main features and processes that must be controlled for health, the organ systems that act as homeostatic regulators, and effectors of homeostatic regulation. It also discusses influences on homeostasis and provides case studies that place examples of ill health and health care into the context of homeostasis. Features of the third edition include: An overview of microbiology and principles of infection management Expanded information on pharmacological principles and actions of the major classes of drugs Expanded discussion on physiological functions in relation to specific pathologies Updates on how the Human Genome project has impacted healthcare Additional case studies to illustrate the healthcare provider’s role as an external agent of homeostatic control Photographs of common clinical conditions Access to an accompanying website with supplemental information An essential physiology and anatomy text, this book guides readers through the basic structure and functions of the body systems to more complex issues of clinical disorders and healthcare practice. Coverage includes the cardiovascular, lymphatic, nervous, endocrine, reproductive, and respiratory systems as well as skeletal muscle, embryo development, and circadian rhythms.
