Book Description :

Gian-Carlo Rota was born in Vigevano, Italy, in 1932. He died in Cambridge, Mas sachusetts, in 1999. He had several careers, most notably as a mathematician, but also as a philosopher and a consultant to the United States government. His mathe matical career was equally varied. His early mathematical studies were at Princeton (1950 to 1953) and Yale (1953 to 1956). In 1956, he completed his doctoral thesis under the direction of Jacob T. Schwartz. This thesis was published as the pa per "Extension theory of differential operators I", the first paper reprinted in this volume. Rota's early work was in analysis, more specifically, in operator theory, differ ential equations, ergodic theory, and probability theory. In the 1960's, Rota was motivated by problems in fluctuation theory to study some operator identities of Glen Baxter (see [7]). Together with other problems in probability theory, this led Rota to study combinatorics. His series of papers, "On the foundations of combi natorial theory", led to a fundamental re-evaluation of the subject. Later, in the 1990's, Rota returned to some of the problems in analysis and probability theory which motivated his work in combinatorics. This was his intention all along, and his early death robbed mathematics of his unique perspective on linkages between the discrete and the continuous. Glimpses of his new research programs can be found in [2,3,6,9,10].

Book Description :

This two-volume text provides a complete overview of the theory of Banach spaces, emphasising its interplay with classical and harmonic analysis (particularly Sidon sets) and probability. The authors give a full exposition of all results, as well as numerous exercises and comments to complement the text and aid graduate students in functional analysis. The book will also be an invaluable reference volume for researchers in analysis. Volume 1 covers the basics of Banach space theory, operatory theory in Banach spaces, harmonic analysis and probability. The authors also provide an annex devoted to compact Abelian groups. Volume 2 focuses on applications of the tools presented in the first volume, including Dvoretzky's theorem, spaces without the approximation property, Gaussian processes, and more. In volume 2, four leading experts also provide surveys outlining major developments in the field since the publication of the original French edition.

Book Description :

Probability theory is a rapidly expanding field and is used in many areas of science and technology. Beginning from a basis of abstract analysis, this mathematics book develops the knowledge needed for advanced students to develop a complex understanding of probability. The first part of the book systematically presents concepts and results from analysis before embarking on the study of probability theory. The initial section will also be useful for those interested in topology, measure theory, real analysis and functional analysis. The second part of the book presents the concepts, methodology and fundamental results of probability theory. Exercises are included throughout the text, not just at the end, to teach each concept fully as it is explained, including presentations of interesting extensions of the theory. The complete and detailed nature of the book makes it ideal as a reference book or for self-study in probability and related fields. Covers a wide range of subjects including f-expansions, Fuk-Nagaev inequalities and Markov triples.Provides multiple clearly worked exercises with complete proofs.Guides readers through examples so they can understand and write research papers independently.

Book Description :

Nineteenth-century studies of harmonic analysis were closely linked with the work of Joseph Fourier on the theory of heat and with that of P. S. Laplace on probability. During the 1920s, the Fourier transform developed into one of the most effective tools of modern probabilistic research; conversely, the demands of the probability theory stimulated further research into harmonic analysis. Mathematician Salomon Bochner wrote a pair of landmark books on the subject in the 1930s and 40s. In this volume, originally published in 1955, he adopts a more probabilistic view and emphasizes stochastic processes and the interchange of stimuli between probability and analysis. Non-probabilistic topics include Fourier series and integrals in many variables; the Bochner integral; the transforms of Plancherel, Laplace, Poisson, and Mellin; applications to boundary value problems, to Dirichlet series, and to Bessel functions; and the theory of completely monotone functions. The primary significance of this text lies in the last two chapters, which offer a systematic presentation of an original concept developed by the author and partly by LeCam: Bochner's characteristic functional, a Fourier transform on a Euclidean-like space of infinitely many dimensions. The characteristic functional plays a role in stochastic processes similar to its relationship with numerical random variables, and thus constitutes an important part of progress in the theory of stochastic processes.

Book Description :

Since 1970 several volumes of the Landolt-Börnstein New Series have appeared which are devoted to, or at least include, the magnetic properties of some special groups of substances. Volume 19 of Group III (Crystal and Solid State Physics) deals with the magnetic properties of metals, alloys and metallic compounds containing at least one transition element. The amount of information available has become so substantial that several subvolumes are needed to cover it all. The first subvolumes deal with the intrinsic magnetic properties, i. e. those magnetic properties which depend only on the chemical composition and the crystal structure. Data on the properties which also depend on the preparation of the samples measured, as for instance, thin films or amorphous alloys and the magnetic alloys used in technical applications, will be compiled in the last subvolumes of the series. The first subvolume, III/19 a, appeared in 1986. It covers the magnetic properties of metals and alloys of the 3d, 4d and 5d transition elements. The second subvolume, III/19 b (1987), covers the magnetic properties of the binary metallic alloys and compounds of 3d transition elements with the elements of group 1B, 2B and 3B of the Periodic System. The present subvolume III/19 c completes the survey of the magnetic data of the metallic compounds of d transition-elements with elements of the main groups of the Periodic System of the elements. The major groups of ternary compounds, i. e. the Heusler alloys and the compounds with perovskite structure, are being treated in separate chapters.

Book Description :

The book is aimed at graduate students and researchers with basic knowledge of Probability and Integration Theory. It introduces classical inequalities in vector and functional spaces with applications to probability. It also develops new extensions of the analytical inequalities, with sharper bounds and generalizations to the sum or the supremum of random variables, to martingales and to transformed Brownian motions. The proofs of many new results are presented in great detail. Original tools are developed for spatial point processes and stochastic integration with respect to local martingales in the plane. This second edition covers properties of random variables and time continuous local martingales with a discontinuous predictable compensator, with exponential inequalities and new inequalities for their maximum variable and their p-variations. A chapter on stochastic calculus presents the exponential sub-martingales developed for stationary processes and their properties. Another chapter devoted itself to the renewal theory of processes and to semi-Markovian processes, branching processes and shock processes. The Chapman–Kolmogorov equations for strong semi-Markovian processes provide equations for their hitting times in a functional setting which extends the exponential properties of the Markovian processes.

Book Description :

An NSF-supported conference in honor of Professor Shizuo Kakutani was held on June 8-11, 1982, at Yale University, on the occasion of Kakutani's retirement. The three major areas of mathematics on which the conference focused were functional analysis, probability theory, and ergodic theory. Most of the articles presented were works by the respective authors on problems that were pioneered by Professor Kakutani in the past. Questions in Brownian motion, induced transformations, representation of $M$-spaces, and fixed point theorems were discussed.

Book Description :

An introduction to analysis with the right mix of abstract theories and concrete problems. Starting with general measure theory, the book goes on to treat Borel and Radon measures and introduces the reader to Fourier analysis in Euclidean spaces with a treatment of Sobolev spaces, distributions, and the corresponding Fourier analysis. It continues with a Hilbertian treatment of the basic laws of probability including Doob's martingale convergence theorem and finishes with Malliavin's "stochastic calculus of variations" developed in the context of Gaussian measure spaces. This invaluable contribution gives a taste of the fact that analysis is not a collection of independent theories, but can be treated as a whole.
