Book Description :

A Radical New Model for Unleashing Your Company’s Potential In most organizations nearly everyone is doing a second job no one is paying them for—namely, covering their weaknesses, trying to look their best, and managing other people’s impressions of them. There may be no greater waste of a company’s resources. The ultimate cost: neither the organization nor its people are able to realize their full potential. What if a company did everything in its power to create a culture in which everyone—not just select “high potentials”—could overcome their own internal barriers to change and use errors and vulnerabilities as prime opportunities for personal and company growth? Robert Kegan and Lisa Lahey (and their collaborators) have found and studied such companies—Deliberately Developmental Organizations. A DDO is organized around the simple but radical conviction that organizations will best prosper when they are more deeply aligned with people’s strongest motive, which is to grow. This means going beyond consigning “people development” to high-potential programs, executive coaching, or once-a-year off-sites. It means fashioning an organizational culture in which support of people’s development is woven into the daily fabric of working life and the company’s regular operations, daily routines, and conversations. An Everyone Culture dives deep into the worlds of three leading companies that embody this breakthrough approach. It reveals the design principles, concrete practices, and underlying science at the heart of DDOs—from their disciplined approach to giving feedback, to how they use meetings, to the distinctive way that managers and leaders define their roles. The authors then show readers how to build this developmental culture in their own organizations. This book demonstrates a whole new way of being at work. It suggests that the culture you create is your strategy—and that the key to success is developing everyone.

An Everyone Culture by Robert Kegan and Lisa Lahey, with Matthew Miller, Andy Fleming, Deborah Helsing | Summary & Analysis Preview: An Everyone Culture by Robert Kegan, Lisa Lahey, Matthew Miller, Andy Fleming, and Deborah Helsing is an academic description of unconventional employee management systems implemented by three example businesses. Cinema chain ArcLight Cinemas, investment firm Bridgewater Associates, and corporate rewards company Next Jump each exemplify the deliberately developmental organization, or DDO. In conventional organizations, employees spend time that could be productive covering up mistakes or hiding weaknesses from coworkers. In a DDO, the company reinvests that time in activities that help its employees learn from their mistakes, build on their shortcomings, and constantly challenge their weaknesses. DDOs rely on the idea that adults continue to develop mentally well beyond physical maturity. The three features of a DDO are the constant pressure to learn new skills, a trusting environment where people accept and give feedback, and consistent practices that strengthen both of the first two features. These three features are known… PLEASE NOTE: This is key takeaways and analysis of the book and NOT the original book. Summary, Analysis & Review of The Arbinger Institute’s Leadership and Self-Deception by Instaread Preview: Leadership and Self-Deception by the Arbinger Institute is a business fable that illustrates the ways that self-deception can undermine interpersonal relationships and productivity. It begins with a new product-line lead employee, Tom Callum, at the fictional Zagrum Company. He’s meeting with the company’s executive vice president, Bud Jefferson. Bud says that Tom has a problem with self-deception, as they all do, and begins a long meeting to mentor Tom on how to avoid self-deception. Kate Stenarude, president of Zagrum Company, joins Bud and Tom for the meeting and contributes her experiences. Self-deception occurs when people look at another person as an objectified problem or threat rather than as a human being. The deception begins when they feel the urge to help another person, but betray that sense and instead justify the decision not to help by amplifying both their own virtues and the other person’s perceived faults. The more often… PLEASE NOTE: This is a Summary, Analysis & Review of the book and NOT the original book. Book Description :

No matter who you are or what you aim to achieve, power determines whether you succeed or fail. But while power dynamics permeate every interaction in the workplace, the concept is very poorly understood or managed in practice. Everyone has influence over some people and is under the influence of others, and must choose how to deal with these realities in daily interactions. This book offers a comprehensive and applied understanding of power in a professional scenario: where it comes from, how it moves and what that means in practice for how professionals work together. Drawing on numerous recent case studies, this book offers a toolbox that anyone can apply, including explanations of the different forms of power, the two ways power can move between parties, the perils of power, how to create accountability, the intersection of power and ethics, and tools for maintaining power relationships with both superiors and subordinates. It provides employers and employees alike the means to understand, manage, and exert the power necessary to control their own circumstances.

Book Description :

If organisations are not working as well as they could, it is because they are still being managed by obsolete principles rooted in the Industrial Age. Until now, management has been a very one-dimensional discipline, in which only profits mattered. Having eyes fixed squarely upon the bottom line has endangered the planet, increased inequality, and disengaged employees. It is an unsustainable situation that calls for the radical redesign of management philosophical foundations. This book shows how to liberate organisations from the constraining assumptions and structures that hold them back, and how to build more conscious, humane, efficacious, and responsible forms of enterprise. 3D Management is an application of Ken Wilber’s ground-breaking Integral Theory that embodies the next stage of management evolution: smarter, nimbler, wiser, fairer, and fitter for the forthcoming metamodern times. This disruptive theory denies the imperialism of the bottom line and replaces it with a harmonic triumvirate that takes profit, people, planet, and purpose into account equally. An integral organisation is made up of three fundamental and irreducible dimensions: science, arts, and ethics, which refer respectively to the techno-economical, developmental, and moral aspects of organisational reality. These three aspects are woven together into an essential unit by the spiritual dimension, which strives for unity and meaning. 3D Management is a summum bonum of these four key dimensions to achieve sustainable excellence, spur organisational development, and create radically engaging workplaces, as well as making a better world. The text features more than 60 vanguard organisations, harbingers of the teal consciousness that will define the future of management. “One thing is certain: the more a truly integral business catches on, the more whole and fulfilled that humanity’s future will be. And 3D Management will have helped pave the way.” (from Ken Wilber’s foreword)

Book Description :

A field guide for leaders who want to engage and energize their workforce with a leadership strategy that puts the well-being of people first. Every leader has a duty to ensure their teams meet and exceed expectations and achieve strategic goals. But leaders who only focus on the bottom line risk alienating or burning out the people integral to the success of the organization. Engaged employees are more productive, have fewer sick days, and tend to stay in their jobs longer. They go the extra mile because they want to contribute to an organization that cares about them as human beings. Put simply, a leadership approach focused on both relationships and results is good for business. But what steps can leaders take to cultivate a workplace culture that is positive, engaged, and also productive? This is what CBC workplace columnist Pierre Battah tackles in Humanity at Work. In this conversational, humorous, and relatable book, Battah acts as a virtual mentor, drawing on his decades-long experience as advisor to large and small organizations. Through colorful and entertaining case studies ranging from fish-packing plants to financial institutions, Battah illustrates what it means to lead with humanity. In this book, readers will learn: why human connection is a crucial component of the employment relationship; how to delegate responsibility, set expectations, and give and receive feedback more effectively; and how cultivating self-awareness can create safe space in which to engage staff. Each chapter includes reflection points and helpful tools to help readers track their progress as they move toward creating a workplace with humanity at its heart. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Plan International Canada, who strive for a just world that advances children's rights and equality for girls.

Book Description :

Organizational or corporate ‘culture’ is the most overused and least understood word in business, if not society. While the topic has been an object of keen academic interest for nearly half a century, theorists and practitioners still struggle with the most basic questions: What is organizational culture? Can it be measured? Is it a dependent or independent variable? Is it causal in organizational performance, and, if so, how? Paradoxically, managers and practitioners ascribe cultural explanations for much of what constitutes organizational behavior in organizations, and, moreover, believe culture can be engineered to their own designs for positive business outcomes. What explains this divide between research and practice? While much academic research on culture is challenged by ontological, epistemic and ethical difficulties, there is little empirical evidence to show culture can be deliberately shaped beyond espoused values. The gap between research and practice can be explained by one simple reason: the science and practice of culture has yet to catch up to managerial intuition.Managers are correct in suspecting culture is a powerful normative force, but, until now, current theory and research is not able to adequately account for cultural behavior in organizations. Rethinking Culture describes and presents evidence for a new framework of organizational culture based on the cognitive science of the so-called cultural mind. It will be of relevance to academics and researchers with an interest in business and management, organizational culture, and organizational change, as well as cognitive and cultural anthropologists and sociologists interested in applications of theory in organizational and institutional settings.

Book Description :

What every leader needs to know about dignity and how to create a culture in which everyone thrives This landmark book from an expert in dignity studies explores the essential but under-recognized role of dignity as part of good leadership. Extending the reach of her award-winning book Dignity: Its Essential Role in Resolving Conflict, Donna Hicks now contributes a specific, practical guide to achieving a culture of dignity. Most people know very little about dignity, the author has found, and when leaders fail to respect the dignity of others, conflict and distrust ensue. She highlights three components of leading with dignity: what one must know in order to honor dignity and avoid violating it; what one must do to lead with dignity; and how one can create a culture of dignity in any organization, whether corporate, religious, governmental, healthcare, or beyond. Brimming with key research findings, real-life case studies, and workable recommendations, this book fills an important gap in our understanding of how best to be together in a conflict-ridden world.
