Book Description :

Book Description :

From the award-winning, bestselling author of We Should All Be Feminists and Half of a Yellow Sun—the story of two Nigerians making their way in the U.S. and the UK, raising universal questions of race, belonging, the overseas experience for the African diaspora, and the search for identity and a home. Ifemelu and Obinze are young and in love when they depart military-ruled Nigeria for the West. Beautiful, self-assured Ifemelu heads for America, where despite her academic success, she is forced to grapple with what it means to be black for the first time. Quiet, thoughtful Obinze had hoped to join her, but with post-9/11 America closed to him, he instead plunges into a dangerous, undocumented life in London. Fifteen years later, they reunite in a newly democratic Nigeria, and reignite their passion—for each other and for their homeland.

Seminar paper from the year 2020 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1.0, University of Constance (FB Literatur, Kunst- und Medienwissenschaften), course: Writing Africa, language: English, abstract: The present research paper aims to prove in a first step that the American Dream acts as a leitmotif throughout the entire novel, thus showing that it is ideally suited as an object of investigation, in order to explore and discuss in a further step whether Ifemelu's American Dream can ultimately be regarded as fulfilled or disappointed, including the emphasis on important literary topoi such as race, the question of women's rights and social matters. Due to the paper's given length and the particular subject chosen, the following analysis will mainly focus on Ifemelu and her experiences, as she actually leaves Nigeria for the U.S. and then comes back to her home country, thus representing the perfect research subject under the thesis of the American Dream, it's reliving and consequences through her personae. As for Obinze, who experiences similar difficulties in the U.K., a comparison does present itself, but can only be the subject of another research paper.

Book Description :

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2018 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 8,5, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, course: Ethnic Studies, language: English, abstract: In the present paper I embed Ifemelu’s migration to America in the broader diaspora of Africans to the United States which is undertaken in search of more favourable education and career prospects. I suggest that diasporans could potentially comprise the par excellence hybrid identity that Homi Bhabha has championed in the development of his postcolonial theory of identity formation. I argue that Americanah poses a substantial challenge to hybridity and mimicry-based cultural identities by accentuating the very limitations of these models; namely, that they seriously overlook the psychic trauma caused by the loss of cultural authenticity due to the disconnection from the motherland and by the identity reinvention undertaken in the host country. My thesis posits that Ifemelu is affected by diasporic melancholia. Adapting Sigmund Freud’s concept of melancholia in the context of diaspora theory I seek to demonstrate that the inarticulate loss of the motherland and the position inbetween cultures disorients and traumatises the subject. I argue that the feelings of ceaseless restlessness and vague yet constant dissatisfaction that the subject experiences point to the trauma of identity loss, a psychic wound that only the physical return to the motherland can heal.

Book Description :

Literary Nonfiction. African & African American Studies. When Did You First Realize You Were Black? Provoked by the fraught relationship between the African continent and American culture in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's Americanah, acclaimed Nigerian-American novelist Tochi Onyebuchi takes an emotional and intellectual journey through his own education in Blackness--his first loves, his introduction to politics, and his eventual commitment to the struggle. Ranging from Paris to a Connecticut boarding school to a harrowing walk through the streets of Palestine, and touching on lessons from Frantz Fanon, Sylvia Wynter, Mohsin Hamid, August Wilson, Dear White People, and Black Panther, Onyebuchi blends memoir and cultural criticism to explore the ways in which identities, like diamonds, are pressurized into existence by suffering, and how "the other side of suffering is self-determination." (S)KINFOLK culminates in a trip to Nigeria, the homeland, where the author realizes that "we share a future," as Black Americans and Africans, on this "asymptotic journey" toward self-actualization.
