Book Description :

Known variously as African studies, black studies, African American studies, Afro-American studies, and Africology, the academic study of the African diaspora as a holistic discipline is a relatively new phenomenon. University programs have been created with reference to a disciplinary matrix, retarding the development of appropriate theory and methods throughout Africana studies. Fifteen leaders in the field of Africana studies provide the conceptual framework for establishing the field as a mature discipline. The focus is on four basic areas: administration and organizational structure; disciplinary matrix; Africana womanism; and cultural aesthetics. The work examines both the theory and the method of scholars in African and African-diaspora studies.

Book Description :

The introduction of 'Black' studies programs into institutions of higher education was a direct response to the mandate for change at all levels that characterized the civil rights movement and the social rebellions of the 1950s and 1960s. In Out of the Revolution, Delores P. Aldridge and Carlene Young collect thirty-one of the nation's top scholars to provide a complete reference for understanding the impetus for, the development of, and future considerations for the discipline of 'Africana' studies. Topics addressed include epistemological considerations; humanistic perspectives; the role of bureaucracy and the academic institution; the social, psychological, political, and economic dimensions; the position of black women in the field; and how the discipline has empowered the black student. This invaluable resource for educators and students alike concludes with a look at graduates in Africana studies and their careers and a discussion of the future of the field.

Book Description :

The systematic study of the Africana/Black experience emerged in universities in the USA in the late 1960s. As an outgrowth of the Civil Rights and Black Conscious movements, demonstrations occurred on campuses nationwide, giving birth to the new academic discipline. Written by emerging and established scholars and published in the Western Journal of Black Studies over a span of three decades beginning in 1977, the 27 essays included in Africana Studies provide an evolutionary trajectory of the discipline, including theoretical, ideological, and methodological perspectives and paradigms. The primary focus is the African American experience with emphasis on how the theoretical and methodological approaches have changed over time as the discipline matured. Topics include pre-colonial literacy and scholarship in West Africa, Black Nationalism, intellectual foundations of racism, and the ideology of European dominance. Articles also address African American personality development, gender relationships, self-identity, masculinity, crime, blueprints for economic development, and digitalization of the discipline. This fundamental collection challenges assumptions, misconceptions, and negative stereotypes within the behavioral sciences, social sciences, and liberal arts fields, and portrays the strength, resilience, and diversity of African and African American peoples.

Book Description :

'Challenging Misrepresentations of Black Womanhood' investigates the stereotyping of Black womanhood and the larger sociological impact on Black women's self-perceptions. It details the historical and contemporary use of stereotypes against Black women and how Black women work to challenge and dispel false perceptions, and highlights the role of racist ideas in the reproduction and promotion of stereotypes of Black femaleness in media, literature, artificial intelligence and the perceptions of the general public. Contributors in this collection identify the racists and sexist ideologies behind the misperceptions of Black womanhood and illuminate twenty-first-century stereotypical treatment of Black women such as Michelle Obama and Serena Williams, and explore topics such as comedic expressions of Black motherhood, representations of Black women in television dramas and literature, and identity reclamation and self-determination. The five sections of the book provide a brief historical overall of the long-standing use of stereotypes used against Black women; explore the systematic attack on Black motherhood and how Black mothers use self-determination to thrive; investigate treatments of Black womanhood in media, television and literature; examine the political impact of stereotyped frameworks used for deconstructing Black female public figures; and discuss self-affirmation and identity reclamation among Africana women. 'Challenging Misrepresentations of Black Womanhood' establishes the criteria with which to examine the role of stereotypes in the lives of Black females and, more specifically, its impact on their social and psychological well-being.

The selections are written by experts in the fields of literature, history, sociology, anthropology, political writing, feminism, and cultural analysis. Divided into five broad, thematic units, the book begins with an examination of the African continent, its people and civilizations from ancient times through colonialism and post-colonialism. Section Two addresses slavery, colonialism, and freedom. Historical perspective is provided through material on West Africa in the era of slave trade. Readers will benefit from fresh views on emancipation and gain insight into role of religion for African Americans. Section Three is devoted to critical issues of race analysis, including the new racism and racism and feminism. Section Four discusses civil rights, Pan-Africanism, and nationalism, with selections on Black Power, the March on Washington, and Pan-Africanism and national identities. Section Five moves the discussion firmly into the contemporary with works on gender, the Black family, and current public policy issues. Effectively opening up new areas of thought across academic disciplines, Introduction to Africana Studies can be used in both undergraduate and graduate level courses in Africana and African diaspora studies. Book Description :

Although traditional academic circles rarely celebrate the work of African or African American thinkers because performers and political figures were more acceptable to narrating histories, this work projects the ideas of several writers with the confidence that Africology, the Afrocentric study of African phenomena, represents an oasis of innovation in progressive venues. The book brings together some of the most discussed theorists and intellectuals in the field of Africology (Africana Studies) for the purpose of sparking further debate, critical interpretations and extensions, and to reform and reformulate the way we approach our critical thought. The contributors' Afrocentric approach offers new interpretations and analysis, and challenges the predominant frameworks in diverse areas such as philosophy, social justice, literature, and history.

Book Description :

Three essays are presented that discuss, in general terms, information that was collected in 1987-88 concerning the current status of black studies in the United States. The researchers were invited to survey selected black studies departments, programs, institutes, and centers judged to be representative of the structural diversity and programmatic scope of Afro-American and Africana studies across the country; to evaluate their present capacities and strengths; and to assess their future needs. Since the conversations on which this material is based were confidential it could not be reported in full; however, the essays contain substantial amounts of general information. The essays are entitled: "The Intellectual and Institutional Development of Africana Studies" (Robert L. Harris, Jr.); "Black Studies: An Overview" (Darlene Clark Hine); and "Black Studies in the Midwest" (Nellie McKay). (GLR)
