Book Description :

Antibiotics are nonbiodegradable, can survive at aquatic environments for long periods and they have a big potential bio-accumulation in the environment. They are extensively metabolized by humans, animals and plants. After metabolization, antibiotics or their metabolites are excreted into the aquatic environment. Removal of these compounds from the aquatic environment is feasible by different processes. But antibiotics are not treated in conventional wastewater treatment plants efficiently. During the last years studies with advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for removal of these pharmaceuticals from waters has shown that they can be useful for removing them fully. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) can work as alternatives or complementary method in traditional wastewater treatment, and highly reactive free radicals, especially hydroxyl radicals (OH) generated via chemical (O3/H2O2, O3/OH-), photochemical (UV/O3, O3/H2O2) reactions, serve as the main oxidant. This study presents an overview of the literature on antibiotics and their removal from water by advanced oxidation processes. It includes almost all types of antibiotics which are consumed by human and veterinary processes. It was found that most of the investigated advanced oxidation treatment processes for the oxidation of antibiotics in water are direct and indirect photolysis with the combinations of H2O2, TiO2, ozone and Fenton?s reagent.

Book Description :

The detection of anti-cancer drugs in surface water bodies around the globe calls for upgrading currently applied wastewater treatment plants. Therefore one of the main objectives of this PhD thesis was to investigate advanced oxidation processes able to avoid such pollution. In addition of developing technological solutions, characterization of pollution sources was performed in this work. Results evidenced the presence of cytostatic drugs in hospital wastewaters, even though a major part of drug is administrated to patients in the ambulatory regime in Belgium (94%-w). In this work, two advanced oxidation process were investigated: photocatalytic membrane reactor (PMR) and photochemical oxidation (UV/H2O2). First PMR tests evidenced that catalyst particles were effectively confined in the system when using a ceramic ultrafiltration module at a transmembrane pressure of 3 bar and cross flow velocity of 3 m/s. Further photocatalytic tests showed that secondary wastewater effluent hindered the formation of OH radicals responsible for pollutants degradation. A successive filtration method of the investigated matrix highlighted that ionic species hindered more the removal rates than the natural organic matter. When comparing PMR and UV/H2O2 processes with an economic and life cycle analysis, the UV/H2O2 process scored best. However, the formation of toxic by-products was observed during the reaction of OH radicals with compounds present in the real water matrices investigated. Therefore UV/H2O2 stands as a promising technology for advanced water treatment, but still requires further studies to be implemented at large scale.

Book Description :

Estrogenic compounds are most significant endocrine disrupting compounds (EDC), which are of primary concern due to their widespread presence in the aqueous environment and also due to their adverse impact both on aquatic life and potential risk to human health. Conventional wastewater treatment plants are not designed to remove EDC, with biosorption on biosolids as the predominant removal mechanism. Anaerobic digestion is one of the most preferred processes employed for sludge stabilization in wastewater treatment plants. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are seen as promising technologies for removal of estrogens from the environment. In this research, a controlled degradation study of estrogenic compounds in anaerobic digestion was undertaken. Anaerobic digestion of estrogens was not observed under any circumstances and pretreatment only played the role of reducing the estrogen loading on the anaerobic digesters. Digestion led to increase in estrogenicity which may be attributed to biotransformation of E1 to E2, and as expected most of the estrogens partitioned onto the solid phase and remained there during digestion. In this work, a comprehensive study was conducted to determine the relative efficiency of various advanced oxidation processes such as O3, H2O2, UV, and combinations of UV/O3, UV/H2O2 for the removal of estrone (E1) from pure water and secondary effluent. In addition, to the parent compound (E1) removal, performance of the AOPs was characterized using removal of total organic carbon (TOC) and estrogenicity of the effluent. Intermediate analysis indicated that UV photolysis produces recalcitrant intermediates, affecting slow TOC removal. Energy calculations and cost analysis indicates that UV processes are best in terms of operating costs (mainly electrical), although ozonation is optimum when both capital and operating water treatment costs are taken into account ($ 0.34/1000 gallon) in light of its superior removal of E1, TOC, and estrogenicity relative to other AOPs. The rate of TOC degradation was low for all the AOPs including ozonation. The rate of E1 removal decreased linearly with the background TOC in water, although E1 degradation in the secondary effluent was not affected significantly due to the low COD concentration.

Book Description :

Industries use a large number of substances in their manufacturing processes and also generate solid residues, liquid effluents and gaseous emissions as wastes. These may be organic, inorganic, inert or toxic compounds but are hazardous in nature and thus need to be treated and disposed off suitably in order to maintain ecological balance of the environment. Also, wherever feasible, recovery of useful by-products, recycling of water and reuse of wastewater (with or without treatment) save resources and reduce production cost. In view of the above, the book has been written, and now updated in the second edition to discuss sources, characteristics and treatment of wastewater produced in industries such as textiles, dairy, tanneries, pulp and paper, fertilizer, pesticide, organic and inorganic chemicals, engineering and fermentation. Many flow diagrams have been included to illustrate industrial processes and to indicate the sources of wastewater. After describing treatment for individual factories, the author discusses the more advanced and economical common effluent plants. The text uses simple and straightforward language and makes the presentation attractive. This book should prove extremely useful to undergraduate students of civil and chemical engineering and postgraduate students of environmental science and engineering. Industrial design consultants will also find the book very handy. To the Greens, it may offer some of the solutions to their concerns. Book Description :

Due to their potential health impact on human beings and ecosystems, persistent trace organic compounds (TOrCs) have aroused concern from both the public and professionals. In particular, the discharge of pharmaceuticals, endocrine disrupters, disinfection byproducts and other TOrCs from wastewater treatment plants into the environment is an area of extensive current research. This work studies the fate and treatments of TOrCs, with emphases on advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). This work presents predicted removal efficiencies of a variety of engineered and natural processes for 55 frequently encountered TOrCs in treated wastewater, based on previously reported data and using existing predictive models. Correlations between physicochemical and biological properties of TOrCs and treatment performance were explored. Removal of TOrCs in all processes investigated in this study was found to be sensitive to matrix effects. Heuristic guidelines for selection of sequenced treatment processes for TOrCs management were established. A field reconnaissance of natural process of TOrCs was conducted by analyzing the occurrence and fate of a suite of TOrCs, as well as estrogenic activity in water and sediments in the Santa Cruz River, an effluent-dependent stream in Tucson, Arizona. Some TOrCs, including contributors to estrogenic activity, were rapidly attenuated with distance of travel in the river. TOrCs that have low biodegradability and low octanolwater partitioning coefficients were less removed. Results of independent experiments indicated potential indirect photodegradation of estrogenic compound by reactive species generated from photolysis of effluent organic matter. Utilizing advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) as tertiary water and wastewater treatment is an option to prevent discharge of TOrCs into the environment. Compared to conventional AOPs, the ability of generating hydroxyl radicals (•OH) without additional doses of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) or ozone makes ultraviolet (UV) photolysis of ferric hydroxo complexes a novel AOP, especially in acidic environments. A Fe(III)/UV254 kinetic model, which combines Fenton-like mechanism, and photolyses of Fe3+, FeOH2+ and H2O2 was proposed and experimentally validated to predict Fenton-like and H2O2 direct UV254 photolysis scenarios, individually. Nevertheless, the model underestimated the ferrous ion development during Fe(III)/UV254 photolysis, perhaps due to the overprediction of the oxidation of Fe2+ by •OH. The UV/H2O2 AOP was also studied in this work. A predictive kinetic model was developed to evaluate process efficiency of oxidation of p-cresol by UV/H2O2 photolysis based on a complete reaction mechanism, including reactions of intermediates with •OH. Results of this study highlight the significance of consideration of radical scavenging effects by the byproducts from oxidation of organic matter in model prediction performance.
