Book Description :

For Native peoples of California, the abalone found along the state’s coast have remarkably complex significance as food, spirit, narrative symbol, tradable commodity, and material with which to make adornment and sacred regalia. The large mollusks also represent contemporary struggles surrounding cultural identity and political sovereignty. Abalone Tales, a collaborative ethnography, presents different perspectives on the multifaceted material and symbolic relationships between abalone and the Ohlone, Pomo, Karuk, Hupa, and Wiyot peoples of California. The research agenda, analyses, and writing strategies were determined through collaborative relationships between the anthropologist Les W. Field and Native individuals and communities. Several of these individuals contributed written texts or oral stories for inclusion in the book. Tales about abalone and their historical and contemporary meanings are related by Field and his coauthors, who include the chair and other members of the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe; a Point Arena Pomo elder; the chair of the Wiyot tribe and her sister; several Hupa Indians; and a Karuk scholar, artist, and performer. Reflecting the divergent perspectives of various Native groups and people, the stories and analyses belie any presumption of a single, unified indigenous understanding of abalone. At the same time, they shed light on abalone’s role in cultural revitalization, struggles over territory, tribal appeals for federal recognition, and connections among California’s Native groups. While California’s abalone are in danger of extinction, their symbolic power appears to surpass even the environmental crises affecting the state’s vulnerable coastline.

Book Description :

In 1908, "Pop" Ernest Doelter was crowned the Abalone King. In the kitchen of his Alvarado Street restaurant in Monterey, California, Pop transformed rubbery gastropods into an epicurean delight. Working with red abalone collected by Monterey's community of Japanese divers, Pop dipped the foot in egg wash, added a secret ingredient, rolled it in cracker crumbs and cooked it quickly in olive oil. Tourists and celebrities alike sat down at Pop's table to enjoy his famous recipe, and eventually, he shipped steaks on ice to hotels and restaurants throughout the state. Pull up a chair as historian Tim Thomas recounts the story of an innovative restaurateur and a group of pioneering fishermen who turned underappreciated mollusks into the talk of the 1915 San Francisco World's Fair.

Book Description :

Sea otters are good indicators of ocean health. In addition, they are a keystone species, offering a stabilizing effect on ecosystem, controlling sea urchin populations that would otherwise inflict damage to kelp forest ecosystems. The kelp forest ecosystem is crucial for marine organisms and contains coastal erosion. With the concerns about the imperiled status of sea otter populations in California, Aleutian Archipelago and coastal areas of Russia and Japan, the last several years have shown growth of interest culturally and politically in the status and preservation of sea otter populations. Sea Otter Conservation brings together the vast knowledge of well-respected leaders in the field, offering insight into the more than 100 years of conservation and research that have resulted in recovery from near extinction. This publication assesses the issues influencing prospects for continued conservation and recovery of the sea otter populations and provides insight into how to handle future global changes. Covers scientific, cultural, economic and political components of sea otter conservation Provides guidance on how to manage threats to the sea otter populations in the face of future global changes Highlights the effects that interactions of coastal animals have with the marine ecosystem

Book Description :

The CRC Handbook of Culture of Abalone and Other Marine Gastropods provides basic techniques and detailed information on the biology of abalone, tropical top shell, queen conch, and other gastropods. It supplies information and data on the culture, reproduction, nutrition, and economics of gastropods currently being raised. The field of gastropod aquaculture is covered from the general biology of each animal to the techniques used in various regions of the world. The first section of the text presents important ecological and biological information on 22 species of abalone found in North America, Japan, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, France, and South Africa. The methods and techniques used to evaluate the reproductive cycle, to control gonad maturation, spawning, fertilization, larval development, and settlement are presented in a step by step format and evaluated for use with different size aquaculture facilities. It also surveys the proper physiological and nutritional factors affecting the growth and survival of cultured abalone. The ecological factors determining the success of reseeding juvenile abalone are discussed and reseeding is evaluated for use as fishery enhancement and aquaculture. The second section covers techniques used to culture abalone around the world. These chapters include information that was previously only recorded in foreign journals with limited distribution. This information source presents the necessary philosophy and fundamentals for a successful culture operation so that you can develop and implement your own techniques. Useful to both students and culturists alike, The CRC Handbook of Culture of Abalone and Other Marine Gastropods provides information and techniques that will be a handy reference in your day-to-day hatchery situations.Features:
