Book Description :

"The northern lights, also known as the aurora borealis, put on remarkable shows of light and motion in high latitudes--Alaska being the perfect place to see them. Shot with ultra-high definition cameras, this book of amazing photographs showcases a period of unusually high solar activity in the northern lights. These new photos take full advantage of the latest advances in photographic technology and the active solar storms of the past several years that cause the lights. With 160 images that have never been collected in book form, this book allows us to witness charged particles in the earth's atmosphere clash with electrons and protons released by the sun."

When Mattie is given the letters by a guest at the hotel in which she has a summer job she thinks that the giver is simply upset. But the next day when the woman is found drowned in Big Moose Lake Mattie has to decide if she will read the letters, or burn them as the woman requested. But Mattie has problems enough of her own as she is growing up and trying to decide on her future. Her desire to be a writer and her dreams of life outside the small rural community in which she has always lived are beginning to overwhelm her. Will Mattie make it away from home? Will she leave the family and boyfriend who both love and smother her? Will she be like her friend and settle to married life or like her other friend and mentor the poet Ms Wilcox. Slowly the two stories merge to one amazing conclusion as Mattie finds the courage to make very important decisions. Set in 1906 and built around the real life murder of a young woman in a popular holiday resort this novel is touching, surprising, moving and compelling.

Book Description :

In Nordic literature a remarkable discussion of the northern light appears in Kongespeilet (The King's Mirror) a thirteenth-century Norwegian chronicle. It is described in vivid detail as the following translated excerpts demonstrate: These northern lights have this peculiar nature, that the darker the night is, the brighter they seem, and they always appear at night but never by day, most frequently in the densest darkness and rarely by moonlight. In appearance they resemble a vast flame of fire viewed from a great distance. It also looks as if sharp points were shot from this flame up into the sky; these are of uneven height and in constant motion, now one, now another darting highest; and the light appears to blaze like a living flame. Three different theories for the origin of the northern light were suggested in this book. Numerous naturally occurring heavenly phenomena have been observed and enjoyed as long as the Earth has been inhabited, but hardly any of them has stirred man's imagination, curiosity and fear as much as the northern light. The northern light is certainly one of the most spectacular of nature's phenomena.

Breaking the role of Chicago socialite as wife of John Borden, heir to the Borden's Condensed Milk fortune, Courtney Borden accompanied her husband on hunts and became adept at shooting and fishing. The couple, along with a small party, took a five-month voyage to hunt Alaskan brown bear, walrus, and polar bear trophies, some of which would become specimens for Chicago's Field Museum of Natural History. Courtney Borden recorded the events of the trip, and this book is her account of the Arctic adventure, from hunting walrus from a kayak to visits to Native settlements and frontier communities in Alaska.

Book Description :

The world’s first Northern Lights observatory is the focus of this account about everyday life and epoch-making pioneering of geophysical research on Haldde Mountain in Finnmark, Norway. Inside four walls in extreme weather conditions at 9000 metres above sea level, the residents formed a class-divided mini-society with researchers, assistants, wives and maids. This book provides an insight into eventful years of the last century. Children are born, photographs and measurements of the Northern Lights are taken, the research develops, and important people die. The work conducted on Haldde Mountain resulted in a geophysical institute and weather forecasting services for Northern Norway and was the basis for the foundation of Norway’s most northern university. The book builds on private letters, memoirs and archive material about daily life and research.

Book Description :

These essays confirm the continued relevance of 'north' as a site of cultural practice and artistic endeavour. If northern regions are tangible realities, the place of varied topography, light, climate, and biogeography, the location of distinct peoples and culture, typically they have been depicted through the traditions of northern landscape representation and the cultural narratives of an era. These discussions - focusing on Scotland, Northern England, Northern Europe, Siberia, the Arctic and Nordic lands - by photographic practitioners as well as theorists, explore and question this tradition, considering landscape as experience, reinterpreting notions of wilderness, emptiness and the sublime.

The Gospel Under the Northern Lights tells the story of how that call came to be and how it was carried out. The forests and mountains of BC seem to naturally produce heaps of characters, stories, and adventures. This memoir introduces you to some of them. Along the way you'll hear of what a privilege and challenge it is to be a messenger of the gospel to a broken world and how that good news of Jesus Christ is still what it is desperately needed among all nations.

Book Description :

“You have a long way to go before you are wise like the old people,” Grandma Grace tells ten-year-old Cora when she leaves her hard-working single mother and spends summers with her grandparents. Each summer, Grandma Grace and Grandpa William teach Cora to care for their animals and tend the garden, fish in the creek, pray to the creator, pick berries and plants for medicine, smoke meat, tan hide, and make moccasins and bannock. “They made me do this over and over again,” remembers Cora, “so I would not forget.” As Cora grows, she is reluctant to leave for university, but her grandparents urge to go, reminding her they have nothing left to teach. Cora finds love and starts her own family as her grandparents age. When she returns home, Cora knows she has to continue the tradition of passing knowledge to her children, and then her grandchildren, even as they leave the community to pursue education and careers. Spirits of the Northern Lights is a beautiful story about family support, Indigenous identity, and honouring tradition in the face of a rapidly changing world.
